I haven't seen the Reddit posts yet - but in the 30+ years I've been hanging in hammocks, have generally used a bandanna or rag or whatever tied above the knot or carabiner or buckle to divert, and it's worked fine under normal/typical circumstances. That does mean you carry several grams of water until your bandanna/rag dries out the next day, but I'm not generally super worried about that. The carabiner does prevent the material itself from wicking water to the hammock though. Metal 'biners can't wick (though a soft 'biner/shackle will).
Hey Derek, As an even a simpler version of Laochri's good solution - didn't you demonstrate that a simple girth/lark's head-hitched piece of para-cord dangling on the hammock side of the suspension connection point worked very, very well?
I've taken a piece of paracord and tied a heavy washer to one end, and tie the other end on the carabiner (latch side) and it works great.

Yes, you can see that on this video: ua-cam.com/video/c0-uOekjcU0/v-deo.html
Класне відею. Дякую за твої завзяті експериманти.
great info!
How does a buckle system perform (battle buckles or superior hammock buckles i.e) vs a carabiner.
Check out this video I made on all the different hardware options: ua-cam.com/video/c0-uOekjcU0/v-deo.html
In short: not great.
