    Mint doesn't repel white flies at all. In fact white flies love to drink mint juice. That's my experience.

    Is there any thing that repels snails? They have ruined my zinnia flower bed this yr

      Hi, I'm sorry to hear about your troubles with snails. They can indeed be quite destructive to a variety of plants in the garden. Here are a few suggestions to help control them:
      Barriers: Snails don't like to crawl over copper, so you can place copper tape around the base of pots or raised beds. Crushed eggshells, gravel, or diatomaceous earth around your plants can also deter them.
      1. Traps: Beer traps are quite effective. Simply bury a small container so that the rim is level with the soil surface, then fill it with beer. The snails are attracted to the beer, fall in, and drown.
      2. Natural Predators: Encourage the presence of natural predators in your garden, like birds, frogs, and certain types of insects.
      3. Nematodes: These are microscopic, parasitic worms that can be purchased and watered into the soil. They infect and kill slugs and snails.
      4. Plant Selection: Some plants are less appealing to snails and slugs. Planting these may reduce the overall population in your garden.
      5. Non-toxic Pellets: Iron phosphate pellets are safe for pets and wildlife, but deadly to snails and slugs.
      Remember that a combination of methods is often more effective than just one. I hope this helps, and I wish you a snail-free gardening season next year! 🌼🐌🚫

    Does Italian basil work? It has strong fragrance.

    • @PlantDoHomeGarden
      @PlantDoHomeGarden  Рік тому +1

      Italian basil (Ocimum basilicum), with its strong fragrance, is often thought to have some insect-repelling properties. While it may not be a foolproof solution, there is some evidence to suggest that basil can help deter certain pests, such as flies, mosquitoes, and aphids.
      The essential oils found in basil emit a strong aroma that may confuse or deter some insects from finding their preferred host plants. However, it's important to note that basil won't provide complete protection against pests, and some insects, like Japanese beetles, may even feed on basil plants. To maximize the potential pest-repelling benefits of Italian basil, you can try the following:
      1. Plant basil near other plants that are prone to insect attacks, such as tomatoes, peppers, or lettuce. The scent of basil may help mask the smell of these plants and make it harder for pests to locate them.
      2. Create a companion planting strategy, where you interplant basil with other aromatic herbs, like rosemary, sage, or mint, to create a more diverse and confusing environment for pests.
      3. Crush a few basil leaves and rub them on your skin or clothing as a natural mosquito repellent. However, be sure to test a small area first to ensure you don't have any adverse reactions.
      Remember that using basil for pest control should be just one part of an integrated pest management strategy that includes other cultural, biological, and physical methods to protect your plants from insects.

    My mint got attacked by ants tho. Maybe it had aphids. I didnt check thoroughly

      I'm sorry to hear about your mint plant. Ants themselves usually don't harm plants directly, but they often "farm" pests like aphids, mealybugs, or scales, which are detrimental to plants. These pests secrete a sugary substance known as honeydew, which ants love.
      Here are some steps you can take:
      1. Check for Pests: Examine your mint plant closely for aphids or other pests. They are usually found on the underside of leaves. Aphids are small and can be green, black, brown, pink, or almost colorless.
      2. Water Pressure: If you find a small number of aphids, you can often control them by spraying your plants with a strong jet of water from a garden hose.
      3. Natural Predators: Encourage beneficial insects and birds, which are natural predators of aphids. Ladybugs, lacewings, and certain types of wasps are known to prey on aphids.
      4. Insecticidal Soap: If the infestation is severe, you might need to use an insecticidal soap. These are available at most garden centers and are generally safe for use on food crops.
      5. Ant Control: To control ants, you can use ant bait stations placed near the ant trails but away from the mint plant. The ants will carry the bait back to their colony, eventually killing it.
      Remember, it's crucial to act quickly when you notice signs of pests to keep them from spreading to other plants. Good luck with your mint plant!

    What keeps bees away

    • @PlantDoHomeGarden
      @PlantDoHomeGarden  Рік тому +3

      While it's important to remember that bees play a crucial role in pollination and maintaining a healthy ecosystem, we understand that some people may want to minimize bee presence in their gardens due to allergies or other concerns. In response to your question, you can try planting species that are less attractive to bees. Bees are generally attracted to brightly colored, fragrant flowers with easily accessible nectar. To discourage bees, consider planting flowers with less fragrance and those with less vibrant colors, such as white, green, or brown. Some examples of plants that are less attractive to bees include:
      1. Marigolds (Tagetes spp.): Although marigolds produce colorful flowers, their strong scent is not particularly appealing to bees.
      2. Wormwood (Artemisia spp.): This plant has gray-green foliage and a strong aroma that is generally unattractive to bees.
      3. Chrysanthemums (Chrysanthemum spp.): Chrysanthemums have a chemical compound called pyrethrum, which is used in some insect repellents and may help keep bees away.
      4. Basil (Ocimum basilicum): While bees may visit basil flowers, planting basil with other less attractive plants can help minimize bee presence in your garden.
      Please note that completely avoiding bees in your garden might not be feasible, as they are a natural part of the ecosystem. However, planting less attractive plants and minimizing the use of fragrant, brightly colored flowers may help reduce the number of bees visiting your garden.
