Hey Maqwell, Great video, Im late, but hey, still worth it! Just a idea, you should do a video about the latvian qualification in 2004! Football in the baltics has been snuffed out by basketball, even tough we were kinda good, and I think it would be a cool video. Anyway, nice work!
Great knowledge about Finland! As a Finnish person, this is our greatest period, and with some young promising players coming through hopefully we can continue this! Markku Kanerva is a great man manager and that's what guided us to the euros and praying for the world cup!!!
Finland qualifying to the Euros was the best moment in my life. I couldnt get a ticket to the game (since it was played in a small stadium as Olympic stadium was not ready). I went to all of the Euro games this summer though, being 5 days in Copenhagen and 8 days in St Petersburg with thousands of Finnish fans is something so special I will never forget. There were no flights or trains to St Petersburg because of Covid so we all took a 10 hour bus drive and it was magical. I wish I could relive those moments again. Hope we make it to the Euro 2024 in Germany.
Incredibly well done video. I remember being at their match against Mexico that you pulled one of the pictures from. I’ve always loved following these smaller nations in international football. Brings back 2010 World Cup video game nostalgia.
Thank you man! I really wanna make more of these small nation videos because I'm the same way too, 2010 World Cup game is such a huge part of my childhood
Man this video brings memories. I was around 8 years old when Litmanen was at the peak of his career with Ajax, around 11 when that horrible game against Hungary took place in '97... I have always loved football through all my heart even though our national team had never qualified for the major tournaments. For me the summer games of FIFA WC and UEFA Euro have always been the highlights for me. My own games with my small city local team along with the great festivities of the major tournaments. The full summers of football... When Finland finally qualified for the Euro 2020(2021) back in November 2019 I literally cried. It was a mixture of happiness and sadness. I was extremely happy to see my country finally making through the qualies but at the same time I was sad because my father, who had past on a decade earlier, wasn't there to see it. Although I wanted to believe he was actually watching, sitting on a cloud next to our Lord.
Oh, I now got this in recommends. I really appreciate video on my country Finland! I love football so much and when we make it in to Euro 2020 that was one of best moments of my life! Sadly we didnt make it to WC2022 but had decent journey. I remember times in 2015-2016 when it was so bad we was Fifa Ranking like 100. Its very great to see more people in Finland are following the national team and no longer laughing at it. Thank you and you also have great football videos! New sub
Glad to see this video finally getting the exposure it deserves, and also glad you enjoyed it bro! Finland’s story is truly compelling and it was so fun learning
Antti Sumiala was my childhood idol for a year when he played for IFK Norrköping in the Swedish 2nd division! He scored a hattrick in his first game and went on to score 20 goals in 33 games. Surreal to hear him mentioned here lol
Late to the party but i just have to say how impressed i am that an American knows so much about european football and europe on itself, especialy eastern europe. Cheers mate.
Am I the only one who notices how good Pukki is in FIFA 23? Like, whenever I have Finland as an opponent Pukki scores, or if it’s a tournament he’s almost always top 5 goal scorer.
My first ever FIFA Manager Mode was one with Arsenal. Finland were the first ever national team I coached in FIFA. They’ll always have a special place in my heart. I know most of the present-day players you mentioned, and Teemu Pukki will always be like a god to me. Amazing video.
You definitely got the story right-also emotionally. Although there was goal scorers also before Pukki, such as Litmanen and Forssell, but then there didn't seem to be defense good enough on those final crucial moments... But that's all in the past now. The bright future awaits.
Hey bro, really amazing videos you've got going on🙌🏼. Have you considered looking into the rise in the Algerian national football team? Really underrated and not many people talk about it
Having been to that infamous Finland-Hungary -game. To add to the injury, Hungary should NEVER had the corner, Hungary player kicked the ball over the goal line from faaaar away, and everyone in the stadium except blind defecation-eyed referee bernd heynemann saw and knew this, the hungarian players among others, they were dearly surprised. I don´t remember whether the goal came immediately from THAT corner kick, or was THE corner kick first cleared to another corner kick, from which the equalizing goal was spawned. Hungary then lost 6-0 to Yugoslavia in the 1st leg, 2nd leg was maybe 0-0 or 1-0, so we probably would´ve lost as well, but had Hungary qualified from there, we wouldn´t have had taken it lightly: After the game My friend said to me then "let´s go murder the referee" and I thought it was an excellent idea, but we were too high up in the stadium to get there in time. But we´d gone and vendetta´d him from Antarctic if necessary, had Hungary qualified. I went through ALL the shit Finland had in football in my lifetime, thank God Liverpool was very, very successful in the 1980´s, or I would´ve become some sort of very evil mass murderer and serial killer, and also probably a cannibal. Anyway, there was probably a period from 1987 and 2005 or thereabouts, when I didn´t miss one qualification home game of Finland, plus then some friendlies and away games. With some friends we also went to see most of the Finnish clubs´ Eurogames, starting from Kuusysi-Steaua Bucharest. The thing that´s changed the most are the fans. In the beginning me and few of my friends and some people who´d escaped from insane asylum were the only ones to try to chant and do more than give applause or shout quietly if Finland scored, which we almost never did. Now it´s more or less full force crowd from start to beginning.
Off-topic, but to be fair I'm still in a state of like difficulty regarding the Nations League. I'd much rather just have some friendly matches otherwise, but I also just find it handy. As the problem with normal qualifiers (see Netherlands EC first Qualifiers 2023) is that you can sometimes get an incredibly awkward estimate of your national team's performance in the long term. Since it's still similar to clubs with selections & managers during their first matches. Only the difference is that you may have to weave together players of vastly different levels, and get a few matches to truly test how well you're performing with it. Kind of like being given new great shoes, but being instantly told to do a marathon parkour with it.
Great vid, but I wish you didn't show that hungary goal. I was 5 years old then, but I remember the look on my dad's face. He was just quiet and stared at the tv in disbelief
The Paatelainen era was horrifying. I still have flashbacks of him trying to force tiki-taka on a team that had no business trying to play like that. And most traumatic of all was the christmas tree formation.
This is easily one of my favorite video essays I’ve made. So glad to see it getting a ton more exposure. Suomi your story was incredibly captivating.
