Just saw Cindy Lee at a sold out, 300 person capacity, shoulder to shoulder Hi Dive in Denver, CO this past Sunday night supporting this album! What a show! Was a real treat to hear songs from this album live! What a record!
I am going to see them in 2 weeks! Bought tickets in a whole other city the same day I heard the album and it sold out just after that. So excited!
@@FabulousResults You’re gonna love it! They only play for about 45 minutes to an hour but literally no second is wasted in their set and almost, if not all, of the set was from Diamond Jubilee! Always Dreaming, Wild One, Dracula were all great live! What’s It Going To Take straight up almost made me cry haha what a show! Absolutely a great time and the openers were solid too! Have so much fun!!

@@BrokenscamI don’t think he could in good honesty give it a 10. His praise came with a big caveat, namely that he doesn’t think the genre itself is capable of a 10, or at least it hasn’t been yet. He admires its ambition and style, but it still suffers from the limitations of this type of music.
In a way, it’s unfair to call it an 8/10 album. It’s an 8/8 album.

I used to work in a record shop in Iceland and I had people in the shop who told me they were from Calgary and I told them my favorite Canadian was from Calgary (Women) and it turned out to be Chris Reimer's sister, it was a heartfelt moment ❤

Diamond Jubilee is an astonishing album. I'll be surprised if there is a better album released this year.
"Astonishing" is a bit strong for a retro album. It's good, for sure, albeit a bit long and scattered.

I’m debating between Diamond Jubilee and Lives Outgrown by Beth Gibbons for AOTY so far… both are amazing records
my jaded ass ignored it for weeks, convinced there wasn't anything truly interesting in Indie Rock™ in 2024 worth checking out. When I actually gave it a chance it quickly became the only thing I've listened to with intent for the last 2 weeks. I'm surprised the metacommentary of it being such a throwback to the late 00's - early 10's experimental scene didn't get a mention. Also I think the rare shrill guitar does add some necessary sonic contrast, but thats me.

@@austins.2495 Sorry there was A LOT of Lo-FI experimental bedroom recordings with mumbled vocals in 90's-Aughts. This sounds like Japanese home recording artist Daisuke Tobari, Ariel Pink (who also wore drag), Jandek etc. etc. That's where he got it from. Wake up Kid - you're like every other young person of 'The Future" - you've already been done but think you're original. Patrick/Cindy Lee actually started making music at that time BTW as he said - so the comment is spot on.

had the pleasure of seeing cindy lee live twice now, glad to see you talk about this project.
Last time i saw preoccupatuons Matt flegel had injured his hand, and cindy lee was already opening so Pat played the bass parts and it was as close to a women reunion as i think we'll ever get.
I went to their glasgow show. It was so awesome to see em all on one stage

Yooooooooo, I’ve met Patrick a few times and he’s a total sweetheart, saw him play a set off of each cd of this album and it’s maybe one of if not the best live performances I’ve EVER seen!

@@bobbysworldofficial the earliest mention of their pronouns I've seen is from their interview with The Fader in 2020. Yes, there are certain articles that still refer to Pat with he/him, but it's pretty common for gender-diverse people to be misgendered (unfortunately).
I haven't loved an album as much on first listen since Blue Rev, and I think I love this one even more.
Been playing it on mostly repeat for a few weeks now and it gets better and better and better every time.
Everyone has been asking for a review for this album and now that its out everyone wants a video about the kendrick diss lmao.

You’re such a “princess and the pea” when it comes to Lofi music. The harsh shrills are partly would make this album so amazing while paired with all the delicate beauty.

Hey thanks for the recommendation... I stopped this vid halfway thru and went and listened to the entire album, and it was worth it. Might even purchase.

Rate your music has been waiting for this review for months
honestly, i think an 8 is fair. it probably could have been trimmed down a bit, but the highs are really high and the lows aren’t that low. very good album
Previewed the album on UA-cam and went ahead and downloaded it, including sending the suggested donation to Realistik. Just finished cataloguing it myself in the music app on my Mac, even uploaded the album art that came with the zip file. It was weirdly gratifying. Highly recommend everyone who hears this album to support if they can.

I went to the Cindy Lee show on Saturday and it was only about a 10 song set but was amazing
It’s not a bad album at all, I enjoyed myself listening to it but I generally do not understand the major hype for it. Pitchfork is making it seem like this is the next big thing of the generation but I’m genuinely trying to understand why. I feel like this take by them is influencing a lot of people to worship this album on first listen.
Maybe it's just an enjoyable listen. I don't think that critical reviews (unusual praise, dismissal, etc.) hold so much power / influence over readers... unless they simply cannot think for themselves.
Dude you don’t get it. The “mistakes” in timing/mix are a feature not a bug. Makes the whole thing so much more human than all the other robotic stuff out now. Over time they end up adding a lot of flavor
He criticizes a lot of lo fi music for this reason, like dude that's one of the main appeals of most lo fi music
Definitely picked up the “Smile” influence (“surfs up” definitely came to mind during “don’t tell me I’m wrong”) and also got some Jesus and Mary Chain vibes. I wake up with a different track stuck in my head each morning the more I listen! Totally consumed

The sloppy playing is absolutely an aesthetic choice, not a problem of musicianship. It subverts the expectation that 50s/60s pop is a genre of studio perfectionism. Pat needed to play "Shaking Hand" live in Women without missing a note, so clearly the technical skill is there... Too bad you didn't dig a little deeper into the choice here, only dinging it on face-value
Saying it's a "choice" is interesting, I think the choice was not to re-do takes if they messed up but it's not like they are playing badly intentionally lol. Great record, deserves at least a 9.

Double Review day: crazy
Been listening to this a lot. It really grows on you more and more with each listen. And I mentioned this on the YT vid for the album but if anyone wants to hear what I believe to be a really really underrated genius lo fi 2000's album that is totally slept on, check out WALK - Every Track (2003-2011). If you like Cindy Lee I can almost guarantee you'll like it.

I feel like anthony didnt want to put in the effort to really give thisa deep dive because of the length. Shame because once you dig a bit and get familiar you realize its better than expected 10/10 record of the generation

COLD VISIONS
I like this album and patrick’s guitar playing is great. The vibe of diamond jubilee is so thick, it sounds great. I can’t stop hearing nearly every track as having been created by starting with a more standard arrangement and then: muting the drum tracks. It really sounds exactly like muting the drums on a full band track over and over.
The vibe is everything but I can’t stop hearing this when I’m listening to it 😅. Still think it’s great.

It’s one of those albums that I am so glad it’s in my life, but also can’t really tell you a song that stands out. I would agree with melon’s comparison to a John Waters’ film. Or like what the music of the Fallout music would sound like if they made their own music rather than just listening to the oldies
