Alex knowles Hi Alex and thank you for listening. This is one of my favourite arrangements for tenor horn also and I appreciate your nice comments.Best wishes from Tom:-D!!
Thanks for listening Daniel, you are a man of impeccable taste ☺☺☺ ... the tenor horn (or alto horn if you are from outside the UK) is mainly found in a British style Brass Band and not much else.
I recently got an old (vintage) Alto Horn (as we call the E Flat Tenor horn in continental Europe) to add to my collection of brass instruments to play with and it is a joy to play. When i listen to you i can only hope to someday sound half as good...:D
The Italian name for this instrument is "genis". A word that in my mother language (Dutch), but also in English is not known. In the novel "Foucault's Pendulum" by Umberto Eco this instrument is mentioned to have played a part in the young love life of one of the main characters. For some or other reason this peculiar word "genis" is left un-translated. That resulted in a queste of finding out what in the name of... could be a genis? It took me over ten years to find out. Only just minutes ago I found an internet page that gave a description of this fine instrument and it's name in different languages, amongst which Italian! "It: genis" it mentions. Finally! Found it. 😩 Now I can rest. 😁
I bought a baritone horn from an online auction. After much research I found out that it was really a tenor horn. Very beautiful music. I wonder why bands don't use them more.
Thanks for listening Clockguy2 and good luck with the horn ... it's hard enough getting three to play in tune within a brass band, anymore and you would need ear defenders :-D!!
Such a lovely tone. It makes me want to take up the tenor horn ! I used to play a bit of jazz trumpet, just for fun, and by myself. I have been concentrating on tenor and alto saxophone for the last 14 years or so, but the gorgeous smooth tone of the tenor horn is very tempting. I wonder which is the best make for a beginner.
Thanks for listening Alex ... I don't have a lot of experience in playing other models and hopefully someone watching might be able to help. I have only ever owned this Besson Sovereign and it appears to be the most popular choice in brass bands ... you might pick one up on eBay for the same price as a new student model. Good luck and best wishes from Tom:-D!!
+Alex Gilmour I've played mainly on Sovereigns too - I had my first horn 30years ago when I was 4 and that was a Besson, my 2nd was a Sovereign and I've mainly had those ever since. I was given a Yamaha briefly as a young player and couldn't get on with it. I liked my Courtois when I got older and liked it, but for ease of playing I would always go back to Besson every time - if you're looking for a 2nd hand one, the blue case sovereigns are like gold dust and are so easy to play.
Thanks for the information. I certainly couldn't afford a new Besson Sovereign judging by the prices I have seen online, There's a used one on Ebay for £1399, but that's still more than I'd like to pay as a beginner. However, I can see the value of a quality instrument. I play alto and tenor saxophone and last year I upgraded my el cheapo alto sax to a pre-owned Mauriat bought on Ebay. Such a superior tone and feel to the instrument , it makes me sound better than I really am. I'm also drawn to the remarkable sound of the bass trumpet too, although the rotary valve ones look very difficult to hold properly.
Hi Alex ... just had a look at that one on eBay ... it has had a lot of money spent on a refurb, I had mine done a few years ago for £500 and it came back looking brand new!!I have seen the 'round stamp' sovereigns go for as little as £700 ... that would be my choice any day ... good luck and I hope you find what you are looking for :-D!!
I've been playing the tenor horn for maybe a couple of months, trumpet for a few decades. I'm aiming for that lovely tone you have. I'm playing it in a trio where the pieces are too low for third trumpet/flugelhorn. Seems like I'm playing high all the time. Still trying to figure out the best place on the staff for the sound I want. Thanks for posting this--9 years ago! 🙂
@@TomsTenorHorn Hey, do you have any tips for holding the tenor horn with a sling? I am having trouble with my left arm... probably arthritis...so I'm trying to reduce the weight a little. Maybe I just have to get used to it. I'm using Ergobone hardware to help support trumpet, flugel, and trombone. But I don't have the ErgoBrass hardware for the baritonium nor for the tenor. But the slings don't feel quite right no matter how I set them up. Any help would be great.
@@ChaplainAcosta Hi Luis, sorry to hear that ... I injured my left wrist a few years ago and was unable to grip the valve casing in the usual way for a while ... transferring the weight by hooking the right thumb under the tube that runs along side the valves worked for me ... sorry I've no experience using a sling.
Hi Anna and thank you for listening ... range will improve when you can visualize exactly what your embouchure should be doing when in a desired range ... it is difficult to explain in a concise way but I use the technique recommended in the book 'How Brass Players Do It' by John Ridgeon ... you won't go far wrong if you can follow his methods ... and of course ... lots of practice ... good luck and keep enjoying it 😀😀😀 Best wishes from Tom
Thanks for listening ... Yes, breath properly and play lots of long notes, slow melodies, such as hymn tunes and practice regularly ... Get the basics right and you will improve ... Good luck with the playing ... Tom👍
Wonderful, what a sound! It is a pleasure to hear from those who express their art. I am looking for a mouthpiece for Alto Horn. Which one do you use? Which one do you advise for a student? Many Thanks
Hi there Josep, many thanks for your comments, they are much appreciated ... I am using a Denis Wick 3 on this video but have since moved to an Alliance TH2A ... good luck with the playing 🙏
@@TomsTenorHorn I'm a trumpet player (student level) and I like the Alto Horn Eb as a second instrument. It is very lyrical and expressive. I practice with a Wedge Mouthpiece (anatomical oval mouthpiece, from Canada). I am very happy with this mouthpiece and am going to test the TH75 tenor horn mouthpiece (Wedge). It is the most used and also the most similar to yours. If you have the opportunity to try a Wedge mouthpiece, you will surely have a pleasant surprise. Best regards

Top work, I wish I'd found your channel sooner! Just out of curiosity what mouthpiece do you use? I'm on a Dennis Wick 2 at the moment and like the rich sounds in the middle/lower register, but it comes at the expense of my upper register and overall lip stamina. Would you have any advice as a fellow Tenor Horn player? Thanks and great playing once again :-)
Sounds great! Do you know where I could find a quality tenor horn, that is in "shape of trumpet". In Eb tune. Not looking for a Mellophone. Or are there that kind of tenor horns?

@@milliestanto Hi Millie ... this may surprise you but I've never observed anyone holding an Eb Tenor Horn as you have described ... although I've heard a few that sound like a trombone 😜
It sounds lovely, your tone is sweet and the tuning is great but the electronic accompaniment really doesn't do you any favours at all. Obviously you're constrained by the rigid tempo, it would be so much nicer to hear you pull it around a little bit and have some interplay with a more sensitive accompaniment. I've played this loads of times with band and piano and the real magic is all in the phrasing and emotion, difficult to achieve when you're playing with sibelius. Enjoyed it though!
Thanks for listening Kartace ..... yes, you are right, Sibelius doesn't lend itself very well to soloist accompaniment and it would be great to have a live pianist ... but I'm glad you still enjoyed it ...Best wishes from Tom:-D!!
The difference in tone quality may be enough reason by itself. It's sounds to me like a very pleasant cross between the french horn and the baritone. That, and some of us have some trouble with teeny french horn mouthpieces.
Don't know if I can better describe the difference between the tone quality between what we in the States call an "alto horn" from a french horn more succinctly than I have already done. I know from having watched people try marching with a french horn that is awkward in the extreme (it's definitely a sit-down instrument). In any case, as I am a long time baritonist/euphonist (since age 10), you'll perhaps forgive me if I'm not more in favor of abolishing the alto horn in favor of the french horn than I am of abolishing my own favorite brass instruments in favor of the trombone.
