I really enjoy all your videos but this one was by far the best. It is a very beautiful page in your journal, and I love your work. However, your beautiful heart shows in this video and I am always looking for picture books to share with my daughter, and have already purchased some you mentioned and am excited to see what other books you have to share!

Thanks so much for sharing diverse kids books! I dont have kids but fully believe that educating children is so so important! So many people say children are too young to understand certain topics but that’s absolutely not true at all. beautiful art spread too!

Fabulous spread and what great inspiration about the diverse children’s books. We tend to stick with what we know, what we grew up with, but there are so many other great books out there to show our kids.

Teacher here as well and love picture books! I have a whole book shelf even before my kids and just keep adding to it. Another one that’s great is This is How We Do It by Matt Lamothe. It shows the lives of seven kids around the world.

One thing that had a huge impression on me as a young child was an African American woman who came into our second grade class to explain why some people had darker skin than others. She used the equator and explained how intense the sun is in areas close to it; therefore, people who lived close to the equator and/or their ancestors needed more melatonin in their skin to protect them from the sun light. I seriously hadn’t given it much thought one way or another up until that point, but I was and am a very empathetic, compassionate, inclusive person anyway. I carried that Information all through my life, and despite growing up in a home where racism was normal I never became a racist and I can trace at least part of that back to that speaker in second grade. I knew it was vitally important because the news was even there in our class room taping it for the evening news broadcast that evening. I think it’s such an important thing to teach your children from an early age about other people unlike themselves whether It’s race or some other difference, as well as teaching them about their own white privileged. Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack by Peggy Macintosh is an excellent read in regards to white privileged lifestyles. There’s also a book with her name that’s a series of essays on this subject about personal experiences. Hope all goes well teaching Archie.

I have to be upfront, I have Aspergers so I don't know how I would have been if I had been neurotypical, but I think I would be the same. I have never gotten stuck on something like skin colour or missing limbs or religion or something like that.
I live and grew up in Sweden, to a local mother and a Danish father and his Swedish was really good for a while thanks to us, his children, since we tended to correct him, as small children tends to do. My mom's best friend was a Danish woman who spoke more Danish than Swedish up until her death, we played with a Danish family where the dad can't speak Swedish still, although I just think he's stubborn
A neighbour we hung out often with had a dad from Chile, one of my best friends while growing up has a black dad and she looked mostly white except her hair, which was enough to make people bully her (until I threatened them with their own theory. They kept asking if she had gotten an electric shock from an outlet, so I just wanted to help their research, on them of course, no violence at all :P ), as a teenager I hung out with all kinds of people, including a girl from the middle east who knew that as soon as she finished the mandatory school at 15-16, she would be sent down to get married and had accepted that, which made her family give her some freedom other girls in her situation didn't have, as long as she didn't have sex.
Did I like it? Not at all, but she was ok with it. She felt like she didn't have the brain to continue studying, so she felt it was a bit of a safety, to get a husband to provide for her, while she took care of the family. Today, 20 years later, I kind of envy her.
Something that happened more recently was I talked to a man for an hour or so and it wasn't until he walked away that I noticed he had a fake leg. My mom is the same, we were getting a furniture from someone and her husband was outside cutting the lawn when we came and we talked a bit. I knew before we went that he had a wheelchair, I just didn't know why. Turned out he was missing a leg from the hip. I didn't focus on it though, I just saw it and then ignored it. But since I know my mom, I asked her later if she had seen it and she had completely missed it. She was talking to his face, not his legs was her response.
It's kind of hard to see differences when I've been surrounded by different kinds of people and notice the similarities more than I notice the differences. If I dislike someone then it's because of their behaviour, not their skin colour :P
