@@lockhrt999 I would imagine they’d have engineered the bin not to turn someone’s hand into a very nice rectangular prism but I’m not seeing an E-stop (a button to stop the machine from operating) so your phone probably isn’t safe if you somehow hit a dude perfect truck shot and sink that bad boy in a garbage bin

When the “Internet of Things” was being hyped years ago they were talking about internet connected fridges where your fridge detects what’s low and orders it, or your sprinkler system is online connected so you can water your garden whenever you want. However I never thought we’d see IoT public bin!
We also have these in Portland. During our heat wave when it was 116f, they lit on fire. That heat was ridiculous.

@@mkay2925 800+ people also died across the PNW during that heat wave. Unless something crazy happens in the next 15 days or so, it was the deadliest natural disaster in the world for 2021.

In defense of the designers, they absolutly weren't expecting 116f in Portland. And honestly who could blame them.

Yeah, that's my main concern. Some people even throw pets in the trash because they're trashy people.
I know that there's been an issue with these bins where paper maccas bags get caught in the entrance. A team of people are hired to ride e bikes around the city all day to make sure they're not clogged.

I LOVE this idea. My only question is does the reduction in bins mean more littering?
That’s what I was thinking. Sure, looks better to have less bins, but after 10 minutes of looking for a bin there’s definitely people out there who’d just go ahead and litter at that point.

@@ExcludedShadow Yeah, in Finnish cities we have a lot of small, dark green bins. You don't really notice them unless you are looking for them. You don't have to walk far in a city center to find them, and even in suburbs you will find them in every bus stop and front of grocery stores.
They do have to be emptied more often, but since they are the size of a normal trash bag it can be done on foot rather than a huge truck.
Yes. Though Philly was horrible for littering anyway but these definitely made it worse.

Australians are pretty smart. It's nice to see a city where the majority of residents are actually invested in keeping the city clean.
That definitely isn't Melbourne, most of them don't even care about recycling, it is just too much effort for them
The problem with some of these is they where put in shady areas so they always overfill and don't work. There used to be some at Southern Cross station at one point but they replaced them now.

We've had those same bins in Nottingham. After a few years they required so much maintenance so regularly that they weren't actually saving that much. Eventually they just started collecting more regularly again and stopped the extra upkeep of the bins...
We have dozens around here in Philly, they work so great that the city has been installing more and more. They're wonderful systems and I have quite literally never seen one broken outside of one time recently when one got run over, and actually sort of acted like a bollard reducing damage to the house.
@@tealmer3528 Give it time. All tech fails to the point where it becomes more costly than it's worth, and filling the landfills with endless tech garbage, just like computers.

Yeah, as is the norm with things in Australia, they waste our tax dollars on some new nifty system that's supposed to be modern but by the time it's rolled out it's so hilariously broken and out of date it's useless.
I came here to say this, have seen them for many years in Nottingham but had no idea why they had solar panels.
In my city we have talking bins. Kids love it, and I have seen many of them ask their parents if they can throw the trash out.

I remember seeing these at Scenic world in the Blue Mountains. Someone there told me how nasty it was whenever small animals would crawl into the bin and get squashed by the compactor :(
considering the amount of possum poo around the bins at my high school I can see how that would be a problem

They're all over the UK - the ones near me are even the same design and company, bigbelly, as the ones I Melbourne!

We've had these in the UK for menu years now, am over the country aswell, even in the most rural locations

I have actually helped develop a similar system for the bins here in the Netherlands! Fun fact, we ran them on Raspberry Pi's!
Almere even has a big stationed vacuum to suck trash out through pipes underground ✌🏻

@@JennifuhhGilardi Raspberry pi's are credit card sized mini computers that are also fairly cheap! They're great for alot of things ranging from hobby projects to enterprise wide implementations into things like automated coffee machines, terminal screens at stations and thus also smart garbage bins!
Raspberry pis are an outdated computer with severe bugs and issues. Me step-dad had to work on atms and the most common thing broken in those atms were the Raspberry pis
@@TobyLechtenberger I wouldn't suggest using pi's for security sensitive applications. And yes they break too in "always on" applications, most often the micro SD's.
That is actually great design, an awesome example how progression in technology can improve even the simplest things like a trashbin
They are crap, only works for a few years then cost of repair outweighs cost of more bins and more frequent pick ups

That's a great idea! Usually these bins are broken and still overflowing, so having the option to charge phones is a great backup 😂
Had these for years in the Neighborhood I work in the USA, right outside Washington DC. They smell absolutely horrible in the summer.
In practice though, we need more bins. There are some that are always overflowing with litter on the street because people won't walk up the block for the next one.
Instead of making the wifi faster than 1.5mb, they make Bluetooth bins.
It's been a long time since I've been to the city. So much has changed.

Still doesn't help with the litter problem. People piss and throw trash everywhere in Melbourne. It's almost as bad as Sydney.

These are everywhere in savanna GA. They are amazing because the city also makes sure you never see them being umptied until very early mornings when almost nobody is around
I did a case study on Bigbelly Solar back in business school.. so awesome to see them have a worldwide impact!
I really love the idea! Tho I doubt the solar panels them selfs do very little if anything at all. The middle of a street, between buildings, close to a tree, laying flat under a non flat (rather dirty) cover. The only way to make it worse would be to put it low enough for people to sit/walk on. Why don't we put the solar panels on the roofs of buildings in cities? Still nonsense, but at least they could theoretically operate at a noticeable level.
Yeah, that was my thoughts too, wondering if they're actually plugged into mains power underneath?
I assumed the solar panel just needs to power the sensor and send a signal, it's not an electric compactor. The solar panel on a calculator can operate on only indoor lights because it doesn't need to put out much power, this is similar running a cable 10 storeys up a building wouldn't be worth it. Plenty of buildings and homes have put solar panels on their roof to save some money on their bills (and also reduce the reliance on coal/gas power) but they are using it to power the building itself not the bins outside.
While these are a neat concept, according to my father who works for his local council and was around during the initial run of these being installed, they just don't work well, they can compact some stuff, but the crushing power just isn't very strong at all and is very much like one of those sillicon valley startups with a cool idea in concept only
We have those too here in Finland, and I couldn't be happier how they chance the street outlook.

Realistically, I wonder if these are tied into the power grid. Those panels are small, and in a city where there not really any direct sunlight they aren't generating very much energy at all.

Things have changed alot and i missed my Flinders Street, the monthly, yearly card for the train, the Melbourne central, the suburbs such as BoxHill, Camberwell, Glen ..... etc.

But no mention of initial cost or maintenance. I would bet if you factor in that information they sound much less appealing.
Have you thought to do video on the vast underground system that goes around the city from the shrine/library/hospital and more?
If you install this bin in my country it will be stolen the same night.
People will strip it and sell the part and the metal.
Not to mention that it improves the city’s overall visual appeal

Sydney has actually implemented these as well in major areas, pretty cool
In my country 90% of the bins volume is undrground, and once a week there is a garbage truck with mechanical arm lifting the bin above the truck and than the bottom of the bins opens.
They work until the plexiglass on the top fogs up and the city completely forgets about it for over a year. I have one in my neighborhood and it's broken.

Some trash cans called big belly solar powered compactors exist in other places, I’ve seen them everywhere, it’s pretty neat.

And the obvious downside is is that those bins are using telecommunications connections which we are quickly running out of frequencies for.

I'd just add wells and a simple geofencing system on top so they can empty themselves at designated locations.
I absolutely love smart city building. We can have clean safe intelligently designed cities where people thrive. It is in inevitability so long as we work together towards a common goal.

In unrelated news, trash bins in Melbourne have become sentient and are compacting its citizens.
They tested them out in the town in live in, was nice to not see overflowing bins being picked out by the ravens and possums.
These kinds of bins are all over the Netherlands, just without the solar panels. I really like them.
