Lyrics:
Crickets are chirpin' the water is high
There's a soft cotton dress on the line hangin' dry
Window wide open African trees
Bent over backwards from a hurricane breeze
Not a word of goodbye not even a note
She gone with the man in the long black coat
Somebody seen him hangin' around
At the old dance hall on the outskirts of town
He looked into her eyes when she stopped him to ask
If he wanted to dance he had a face like a mask
Somebody said from the bible he'd quote
There was dust on the man in the long black coat
Preacher was talking there's a sermon he gave
He said every man's conscience is vile and depraved
You cannot depend on it to be your guide
When it's you who must keep it satisfied
It ain't easy to swallow it sticks in the throat
She gave her heart to the man in the long black coat
There are no mistakes in life some people say
It is true sometimes you can see it that way
But people don't live or die people just float
She went with the man in the long black coat
There's smoke on the water it's been there since June
Tree trunks uprooted beneath the high crescent moon
Feel the pulse and vibration and the rumbling force
Somebody is out there beating on a dead horse
She never said nothing there was nothing she wrote
She gone with the man in the long black coat

The first Dylan concert I ever went to, Dylan played Man in a Long Black Coat AND Blind Willie McTell, among other gems. I was in heaven.

Thank you dad for showing me this kind of music.
This entire record remains criminally underappreciated.
Thanks for using "under-appreciated" instead of 'underrated'. All you've got to do now is lose the "criminally" to be completely cliché-free!
But actually, 'Oh Mercy' is widely celebrated.
only you did
@@blackmore4 In terms of his entire catalog, the statement stands well upon it's own merit, thanks though bud!
So true. Its like a bullet piercing through your heart.

This is one of Dylan's greatest atmospheric poems - a masterpiece.

Thank GOD for Bob Dylan 🙏
I'm 70 years old and this is the first time I've heard it wow

What is an atmospheric poem???
Most underrated Dylan song ever.
At this point in my 55 year obsession with Dylan, every song is the most underrated...
It's so atmospheric
Underrated by whom?
@@ernestgilbert364 one the best !
Agreed :)
I'm 70 years old a big fan of Bob Dylan and this one kind of like snuck up on me
Yeah well I guess it does happen that way sometimes
You listen to this song and realize songs are forever.
Goodness, oh goodness- 50 years I still find him so amazing - 'people don't die, people just float' stunning
After death the spirit or atma in India just floats in the sky. Bob says truth. All he sings is the masterpiece so many of them. Bless u bob.

My favorite Dylan song. My dad used to play it all the time when I was a kid.
how old is now your dad
Same here 🙂
All of his music is a legend. No match for other. He is a daddy of soulful music. Truth said in a poem.
The whole Album is pretty amazing - 2nd break up and leaving his Christian phase, I believe.
My absolute favorite Dylan song ever, and one of the few things I can recite from start to finish. Divine poetry
HI Jackie.....
I hope you recite this ..loudly and theatrically.....all over town...as you walk around....it is gospel...
I haven't learned this one yet....thank dog...more to learn..
but .....I know all the rest of his canon
he is my jesus .....
At 10, bringing it all back home....was playing so much on my record player, my mother threw it in the fire....( it was my weird uncle's....)...
I had already memorized it though...and now....almost 60......most of his canon....is my companion...when the rest of this planet...wants to burn stuff.lol
He has always been someone who sees it all......as I do....and it aint a real popular view....
But once you see truth......How?....does anyone live a life under any other rules???
I absolutely agree. It's otherworldly 💙
Divine indeed.he the best in the soulful music. U listen him 1000 times still u repeat it again. Pure magic.bliss.painful but true words.
I heard ELP's version before this original recording. I love the lyrics, but I think ELP did a better job with the song.

Dead right. Absolutely unique and the best.
Excellent description!
It's because he's got a deal with Satan.
Did you watch the interview?
BTW religions are Satan's invention to ridicule the Truth.
Bloody truth my friend. No word is enough to describe his talent. Man is godly.
How can so much great music come from one man? I listened to Isis about 2 hours ago and have been going down this rabbit hole ever since. Became a fan in 66 and have hardly had time for any other since.
Yet. At the end of Long Black Coat, the last couple of seconds, there's a scream of some kind. Subtle, you have to listen for it but it's definitely there. It could be the guitarist taking his fingers off the frets but whatever it is Bob left it in there for a reason. Your thoughts?
You right me too
@@chrisp1500 I never noticed it before. Not exactly a scream, but yeah. If it's intentional it might convey a sense of danger or unhappy outcome. Something like that? Just listened again and it's also there the first time he says long black coat.
Great greatest gift of God almighty. Cheers.enjoy.

Masterful story teller. The greatest lyricist to ever walk the face of the earth. Above all.
The rich harmonica at the start contrasts so much with the hesitant vocals and simple guitar.

Daniel Lanois was on a roll at this time and produced some good albums. If you like this and haven’t heard it, check out his album Acadie. I’m not good with dates but it’s more or less from that time period. Superb album.
@@waterfordrs22 I found it to be a surprisingly excellent album. Listened to it over and over

You should read his book ‘Chronicles’ it describes the creation of this album in on of the chapters.

Honestly love this song so much.. it’s so mystical, sexy, creepy.. amazing
I agree, it's pure genius. Let me ask you, do you hear the "scream" in the background during the last 2 seconds of the track? You have to listen close but it's definitely there. Sounds like a cross between guitar strings / pigs squealing/ person screaming. I've played it for other people and they can hear it but I've never seen it mentioned anywhere. Your thoughts?
You are beautiful.
If ever a Dylan song had the biggest Daniel Lanois stamp on it, it's probably this one!
ILOVE.YOU BOB DYLAN
Hello dear, it’s nice meeting you on here
I knew someone once who was a great musician. Now, he wasn't a great crafter, maker like Bobby here. What was great about him was that he sat with his guitar day in and day out. He felt that guitar everyday; that guitar got old with him.
He once told me that music was medicine to him. It didn't matter if it was good or bad - he just needed it to survive. One day he says to me, 'What if you wake up one afternoon and from your window you see that your pharmacy no longer exists? What then? I'm learning to make my own medicine. I will do things to the air with this guitar.'
Brilliant. I hope he succeeded-we need all the medicine we can get right now.
The person you knew is a wiseman.. music is medicine

I love this tune! And I love "Oh Mercy."
"people don't live or die people just float"
thrilling song....amazing...totally hypnotized!! ❤❤❤
…. the dead also float ….
It's not just the line but the way he sets it up. 'There are no mistakes in life some people say And it's true sometimes you can see it that way...' should lead to a discussion of maybe free will v predestination, but he takes it to another level and delivers a fairly stinging put-down of the world at large. A knockout punch.

So true
Bob is the legend of song writing. He is possessed I think. Live long my dear bob Zimmerman Dylan.
I really love the way Daniel Lanois shaped the sound of this album. It can be greatly heard on this track!
I just listened to an interview where it was mention that Lanois asked Dylan ' Bob, Would You by any Chance have Lyrics for this Music? ' and Dylan answered ' Yes I do have something! ' - Then Dylan sat at a table and wrote with a pencil - without erasing - the whole song. Afterwards Dylan read it over the Music and followed with the 'singing' - one take - and that was IT - Pure Genius at work !!!

Have only just realised... ‘The Man In The Long Black Coat’ = The Grim Reaper...(?)
Great song in any case!
the man in the long black coat is the undertaker
Dylan's song writing is always rooted in reality, which is offen grim as we all know, and he doesn't make it more pretty than it is. Dylan is the Rembrandt of contempary modern music.

Como aprendes, que metodo sigues?
@@diegocoladodelacruz96 μπράβο ρε μάγκα !!!
Bob Dylan is an astonishingly good harmonica player. His sound is very compassionate, or sad, suggesting there is a better world.
That's great, but he doesn't play much in the beginning nor at the end of the song! However, Dylan must have used a better harmonica than he did back in the 60's because it sounds much better!
I like the ringing in the ear effect, like someone's been shot and he's singing about the loss.
What a song, that intro alone with the harmonica solo is godlike.
Love the atmosphere of this song, haunting lyrics
