I was born in 1963 so I remember these cars. They eventually became known as land yachts. It was like driving on a cloud.

I was born in 1964. Many were still on the road when i began to drive. My father was a mechanic, so I got a chance to test drive several of them after we repaired them. They rode incredibly smooth.
Yep, and I miss that floating cloud every day! Millennials and Gen Z'ers will never understand what true luxury cars once were! I was always partial to the old Buick Electras, Park Ave. trim level, between the years 1976-1984....although the new downsized design for 1985-1990 Electra/Park Ave. was also....quite luxurious, floaty and quiet. I liked these cars because they all felt like a Cadillac, often with more standard features, for a MUCH more reasonable price.
It's sad that America will never build cars like this ever again.
Not really given the horrific qualify all of these cars exhibited. This was the height of the malaise era.
Except back then it was very easy to identify them and each one had a unique look. But today you can't even tell one brand from another.
It's unnecessary now these days because big pickups/SUVs took their place.

@@SuperBooboo02 lol, vs a 4000 cid v8 with 140 hp. Don't know what full-size truck/SUV with a "wheezy" 4-cylinder, yes you have the GM twins but that's 310-320 hp and 400+ tq..
I was born in 1961 so I grew up seeing these cars everywhere. If I could I would have one of each parked in a building on my property that's in this ad. Love those land yachts.

My wife and i got married in my dads 1977 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz. We got married 1993 and still together. What a beautiful car.
Chrysler cars were always different from the other "Big 2," and Chrysler's commercials were different too. Those ads for the New Yorker and Imperial were just beautiful!

These cars all seemed so normal to me when I was a kid in the 70s.
1970 cars and trucks are better then today's market
I agree they had a much smoother ride and they were far more comfortable, as for better it's debatable. 70's American cars were heavily bottlenecked by emission controls and lower compression engines. 70"s cars were also known for their unreliability. The Fords had many issues with their "Brain Boxes", overheating and vapor lock. Chrysler had issues with their "ballast resistors" cracking and front suspension. I can't remember problems with GM but I'm sure there were. The Ford bodies held up better than GM and Chrysler because of rust but GM frames held up better than Ford and Chrysler.
I took my 1975 Monte Carlo cross country twice and to Canada it was the ultimate in comfort.
You rode in style. I used to drive all over in my 75 Monte ,during the early eighties. I had a 73 Monte before the 75.
I had a 1974 T-BIRD it was burgundy and white. It was beautiful and such fun to drive
I wish I still had it. There is no such thing as classy autos today

The 70's will always be my favorite decade for cars. From the exterior styling to the plush pillowed interiors in velour or leather. Nothing today remotely compares to the ride of those big heavy luxury cars. I was fortunate to own several of the cars in this video. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.👍

@@aaronwilliams6989 as bad as muscle cars, big blocks, hemi .grand parents had a 70 chevy impala 454 passed every thing but a gas sta,14 hi way on its best day had a diet of 92 octane leaded Premium gas same with muscle car where fun when it lasted good luck running todays gas
by 1972 compression ratio had dropped to 8.5 to 1 to run on no lead, low lead gas , muscle was over ,1970 10.50 to 1 needs hi octane leaded gas

Nice I love older classic cars. Yes I'm in my 30s and I never grew up around older cars but I love car shows and UA-cam vids about old different cars.
I was born in '58 and I remember every car in that video and other cars they didn't mention. The luxury cars like Cadillac, Lincoln, Chrysler were true luxury. The interiors where plush, comfortable, roomy and quiet. The exterior was stylish and classy. Today's so called luxury cars can't compare or even come close to the cars back in the late 60's and 70's. Wish they could bring those cars back.

Agreed. Born in '56. Owned a '77 Lincoln Town Coupe' for quite a few years. Probably the quietest car I ever have owned and someone mentioned "driving on a cloud" and it truly was. Smooth. My '89 Town Car came close.

Yes, it's beyond me why people now accept sitting on hard seats, and hard suspensions, rather than comfort. Possibly they just don't know because they've never experienced a real comfortable car like these.
Home garages, smaller. Parking garages spaces, smaller. Parking meters, closer together. Car we grew up with & loved. No longer 'Fit' in todays society. Try going thru a car wash! A fast food drive up window? Sadly the world is no longer built to support these cars. Even if they got 45mpg.

My favorite decade for American cars. The 1960s were great but all looked kind like the same, 1980s are a mixed bag of cars who tried to look European, the 1990s are kind like the 60s, excellent cars, but all looked the same, while in the 1970s you could know what was the difference between an Cadillac El dorado and a Chrysler Cordoba. This was the decade in which a Dodge Monaco looked and felt more luxurious than a Mercedes or BMW.
The 70's were a decade full of cost cutting from the American brands....arguably the worst Cadillacs were built during that decade....Body panel gaps , extensive use of plastic in the interiors etc
Meanwhile the German luxury brands were growing by leaps and bounds on the high end and the Japanese were growing by leaps and bounds on the lower end
Cars did not look like each other in the 1960s.

I owned a 1970 Chevy Caprice, '72 Impala, '74 Monte Carlo and Camaro, and a '79 Olds Cutlass Calais.

We called these land yachts Boats back in the eighties. I had a friend who even painted the word 'BOAT' on the nose of his massive used car!!! lol

These cars had real style , real character, while todays cars unless the name brand is written on the car it is hard to tell if it’s Japanese , American , European or Chinese

America at its peak, the whole world admired these cars and they made America different from the rest of the world, I was bewitched by these cars and I find it difficult to accept the European concept of a car that is not intended for leisurely cruising, in fact you can't cruise in them at all, because they are today's the cars are too hard and uncomfortable, you can't wait to finish the drive, the fault lies with the automotive journalists who test on extreme performance and that's why cars are made for extreme performance, not for leisurely cruising

i was born in the late 90s so i have no memories of living or seeing these. but just from a design point of view, i find then very interesting. especially how gigantic they were !

If you wanted to take 5 people to the airport all 5 inside sit in comfort & the trunk has all their luggage & isn't full. Or tow a 30 foot travel trailer. The 5 people in the car won't notice much of a change. You'd be hard pressed to find an SUV today, that can match them. We called them, "Land Yachts"

I'll never understand why this period was referred to as the "malaise era." Even in the Seventies, everything seemed perfectly normal until the government had to poke its big nose into the car business with all these ridiculous regulations !!
Did you see the gas mileage on the last car? 15 city and 22 hwy? My modern SUVs get better gas mileage than that, and they aren't hybrid!

get gas mileage, power, AND size just didn't even exist. You literally had to give one to get the next.

I enjoyed my 73 Impala 2dr.
It was Burgundy with a black top and Black interior.
Even after 200K miles, with a hole in the exhaust, ( which made it sound like it had a souped up engine, Blap, Blap, Blap, Blap, Blap) could still lay 2 sets of burnt tires on the pavement when mashing the gas pedal to the floor.
It was my “Party Mobile”.
I remember these cars when I was a kid growing up in the 70s. I thought Chrysler and GM had the best vehicles. The 1973 Imperial was a work of art. Wish they made them like this now. Plus a wide variety styles. Now you just get one.

@@jaypeterson7637 Those Cougars/T-birds were awesome! I did prefer the T-bird with it's quasi-targa band and hidden headlights... I wish Mercury could have figured a way to incorporate the targa band with the Cougars awesome rear side window... that was much more stylish than the t-birds... and hid the headlights 🙂 I'm going go out on my own here, by myself... lol... and say I even liked the next-gen, 80-82 T-bitds and Cougars... and yes, I know I'm the only one... lol

I was born in the 60's and remembered all of these 70's cars brand new. Regardless of what people said .. America made some good big and even midsize cars back in the day... big smooth powerful V8's .. that were reliable and well build. The small cars of the 70's were not all that good .. but the prices were so low .. those small cars didn't last till 100,000 miles but the bigger cars could .
Nothing says luxury more than full foam. MMMmmm foam.
Such glorious cars. I would give anything to have them return and replace all these nondescript boring gray SUVs that we are trapped with today. Technology and austerity can’t replace style or class. In this video I love the Ford LTDs, Cadillac DeVille and Lincoln Continentals the most. Honorable mention to the Mercury Grand Marquis and the late 70s Thunderbird too.

I was born in 1947. So big American Luxury Cars were always in my view. And the best? The Imperial. I grew up with them and believe me they were THE luxury cars of that era. Ever frive on the highway? The ride was precise and so comfortable unlike totdays buck boards. Luxury was mwasured by how relaxed you were at the end of a days drive. How about the 1956 - 1964 - 1966.

Big, Bold, Brash, and Beautiful best describes most full size American luxury cars of the 1970’s! It’s as if the stylist took the designs of the 1960’s and refined the looks..smoothing out unnecessary creases and folds, lengthening hoods and deck lids, taking downward curves at leading edges of fenders and quarters and straightening them to the very edges, grilles more upright with finer details, wider tracks, smoother suspensions, quieter more luxurious cozier interiors, rear wheel skirts, opera windows, padded landau tops, two-tones, and as much brightwork and chrome trim on the top trims as they could tastefully(and sometimes distastefully) add! As a kid in the 70’s, these American luxury cars always captured my imagination and I would look at cars like Mark lV’s/Thunderbirds, 225 Electras, 98’s, Caprices, Grand Prix’s, etc. and me and my playmates would compare/share which ones any of us would have or drive as adults, many of them not being as imaginative and picking cars their parents drove….like Gremlis, Beetles, or some oddball of a car that was nowhere near as impressive! Also the European marques like BMW, Audi, etc. were more sporting and for the price point, you only got a third of the car in comparison, and no more impressive than the best Toyotas or Datsuns IMO!

Beautiful design in the beginning of the seventies, but not in 1973 / 74 and 75, better the "downsizing" design of 1977 and later, beautiful the 1977 Impala, Buick Le Sabre, Ford Thunderbird, Mercury Marquis, Lincoln Continental Mark, 1979 Mustang and Cougar etc.
I have a 65 Tbird and 73 Plymouth Gran coup, I don't care that the gas mileage sucks( compared to todays gas sippers) I drive them more far more than my modern cars and can repair them easily if need be.
I wish I knew for sure what happened to the Big Three automakers in the 70’s. They pretty much killed themselves and opened the door to foreign competition. Yes, they faced big challenges. A market that suddenly became focused on fuel economy. So-so to crappy economy. Government regulation. Powerful labor unions.
Detroit boomed in the 50’s and kept booming throughout the 60’s. Then the wheels fell off in the 70’s and Detroit started a long decline. I don’t get it. The same companies that built amazing planes and tanks and trucks for us in WWII could not seem to adapt to the changing market in the 70’s. Their quality control was abysmal. Their large cars were labeled “dinosaurs.” Their attempts to compete with Japan on small cars were a sad joke (Vega… Chevette… Maverick… Pinto?). Why did they fail?
I grew up in the '70s, and there were very few '70s cars I didn't like. Most of those were made toward the very end of the '70s, when they started downsizing everything. The 1979 Foxbody Mustang stands out as the ugliest American car of the '70s. It's amazing just how many 2 door cars there were in the '70s. Now they are all gone.
I never understood the appeal of the Foxbody mustangs. They were ugly to my eyes.

Cannot fathom why a rural veterinarian would ever be driving a Caprice coupe for rounds.
My hunch is they were trying to play off the PBS series All Creatures Great and Small that was a hit on Masterpiece Theater back then. Snobs would get the gist.
No way a big full size LTD with a 2v-400 gets 22mpg unless its midnight, no wind, cool asphalt, 55mph and in Nevada. Had the '72.
What's wrong with Oldsmobile?
Oldsmobile made many big grand great cars. Only 5secs an the last one. It's always about Chevy ,Ford, Cadillac,what's wrong Oldsmobile. Need more time and videos on them. I have plenty of time with different olds and always had a sporty feeling no matter how big it was. Just super comfy. Can we do one only on Oldsmobile longer duration 😊 thank you. Father Cadillac all the way. Grandma-deal w/dealership. 1st new Olds ea year. Did it for 20 years. Didn't care options/colors. 1966 Teal Blue huge engine & 4 on the floor. (not, a granny car) They sold it. She made them take it back & give it to her & she left 2 black stripes in their driveway on the way out. We called them. Elevens.
