I have been listening to her performances on youtube all day. What a gifted artist we have lost. Thank you, Mme. Caballe for so many wonderful, generous performances. Rest in eternal peace.
Addio La Superba ! RIP (1933-2018). One of the most riveting operatic personalities of the 20th century! Endowed with a sensational and ample spinto voice, her repertory was extremely diversified, from classical melodies, to Zarzuela, pop hits (scoring huge triumphs with pop artists including Freddie Mercury and Vangelis) and of course opera, in roles ranging from Alceste, Medea, Semiramide, Contessa in the Nozze di Figaro, Norma, Imogene, the Tudor Queens, Violetta, Leonora, Elisabetta (in Don Carlos: a most fabulous interpretation), Manon, Salomé (Hérodiade), Manon Lescaut, Mimi, Floria Tosca, Princess Turandot, Adriana Lecouvreur, Arabella, Salome and countless others, including rarely performed works, both in opera and on the concert platform! A God’s voice, her perfect breath control (only challenged by that of Leontyne Price) was awesome, her mastery of the pianissimi (frequently overused) and long-sustained high notes (glorious if somewhat metallic high-Cs and Ds ) were thrilling to the last and projected easily in the largest auditoriums. Her trills were sometimes lazy as was her vision of the prosodic line, which she knew how to accommodate to best fit with her own vocality! She was a marvelous, unique and generous Lady whom I was privileged to know and of whom I have fond memories. She leaves an undisputed and regal artistic legacy. One of the last operatic titans! Her radiant smile and indomitable sense of humour will be missed but her talent will last through her many recordings. She was an ambassador of peace and humility … Her voice will resonate high up there among singing Angels who will rejoice in welcoming her loving soul in a better world. RIP.
You knew her personally? How did you meet? Regarding her "metallic" high notes I beg to differ....please refer to her performance of"O Mio Babbino" where her voice as it is on all subtle gentle softer more emotionally exhausted songs requiring the soprano to convey more intimacy more drawing the audience into relating to those same emotions, Montserrats voice seemed to float on air you could feel an almost ethereal angelic indescribably beautiful tone touching the soul of every one with the ability to hear.
@@tamarakennedy4976 True, she produced some of the sweetest notes I’ve heard, like Milanov, they float on the air like it’s as easy for them as it is for us to sigh.

Her range is actually F#3-D6. F#3 from "Arrigo! ah parli a un core" and it's hard to include that Eb6. Her voice sounded best up to C#6. D6 was kinda off, but she did couple good D's. BTW, what piece at 2:22? Is 2:30 a Mad Scene of "Il Pirata"? It's in higher key than original, but her voice doesn't sond changed by audio transposition, so is it possible that she did it higher?
low G flat in Salome's Final scene and low F sharp in "Arrigo" in Vespri Sicliani is her lowest note! and even in her famous "Come scoglio" and "Per pietà" from Cosi fan tutte she does several low A...
the last prima donna, opera belcanto at it's best. Caballe and Callas had more opera roles, different ones, than any other singer. That shows their immense talent and abilities beyond any later singer i heard, even though there were many fantastic sopranos at the same time and later
Something bizarre going on here. Below is a comment I wrote about three weeks ago. However, the spelling and wording have mysterious been altered. What I wrote was: 'With Caballe, it's all about breath support, diaphragmatic control. She's superhuman.' Somehow words changed. My 'superhuman' turned into 'inhuman.' 'Diaphragmatic' altered in spelling to 'diaphgramic'. And 'it's' became 'it'. Everything was correct when I left the page, three weeks ago. But now that I'm back, I see the mysterious changes. Has this ever happened to anyone else?????
+cpanati Well, your posting was badly in need of some corrections, but admittedly not those changes. However, words like "breath support" and "diaphragmatic control" are meaningless phrases used perpetually by voice teachers who don't really understand anything. First of all, the diaphragm cannot be consciously controlled during singing, only during inhalation. It's the torso and abdominal muscles that can modify the pressure and airflow dynamics. Second, she is not "superhuman," she just has a sound technique in which the singing voice is based, quite correctly, on the ppp speaking voice. Also, she likely has a fairly tiny larynx, but fairly large resonating spaces around it, giving her the capacity to create large sounds around a very narrow and optimally compressed core. More modern sopranos could do what she did, but the majority are brought up in such a competitive environment and with such faulty training that many overblow the voice and never find where it truly sits.
wow Freddie could go one note Higher than her but that doesn't make it better, Montserrat did it much more professional and with better breath support. Truly legends.
and in "Oh sole ti vela" from il Pirata it's clearly a distortion or the sound cause with the tonality it's a high and not a C shapr , you can check on other videos of her singing the same aria on youtube and also, Rosina that she sang in 89 in Nice is a high D! also a distortion or speed up of the sounds that make it sounds like a E flat here... her highest note is officially a high D
I think she made a strained attempt at E flat at 3:00 and it was quite crappy. E-flat wasn't part of Caballe's true vocal range even her high D-flat was a little screechy.
+Kimberly Waters This is the final scene of the opera "Il Pirata" from Bellini, it is transposed up, for this reason it is a high C# instead of a high C.
Aria from Verdi’s “Aroldo”, taken from the RCA album “Verdi Rarities”. I loooove it :-) She sang this aria for almost 15 years but she never hit again this gorgeous C#.
I don't particularly like her 6th octave notes. Especially above C#. They sound a bit harsh and I don't find them pleasant. But then again, that might just be my personal taste. However, her breath support was immense! Her dynamics and volume control were incomparable. She was indeed one of the greats.
With Caballe, it all about breath support, diaphgramic control. She inhuman.
+cpanati Caballé's super long notes are so incredible.
cpanati ....n when she hits those high notes ~ gives my goosebumps their own goosebumps
It's about her stunning mechanism and musicality not breath support. She takes a breath and sings.

She never sang an Eflat in public. The last example is a (bad) high D at the end of the Barbiere duetto (look at the score).
the recording sounds like it's in Ab major though, so Eb would fit into the key (though maybe the recording is sharp? sometimes that happens)
