My only regret is not taking more time back in the day to learn more about Gary and appreciating his talents as a lead guitarist. HI Infidelity made Kevin a household name as the face/voice of the band. Gary's contribution was so important to the quality of these songs, but it wasn't until the end of his life that I realized that. He deserved that recognition.
I realized it in 77. Got me that nine lives album and Gary Richrath become my favorite guitarist of all time after that. If you listen to the lead on "meet me on the mountain" it was what we called "chiming and squeeling" long before eddie van halen had figured out a c chord
I always thought of it as Gary's band. You know, Kevin's great. He's a great songwriter and can write a great ballad, but damn it, it was always Garys guitar playing that really got me energized.

I saw Gary Richrath half a dozen times when he was with SUBURBAN 9 TO 5, before he was with REO SPEEDWAGON, and he was awesome to me even then. I worked at Caterpillar Tractor Company with his brother Denny (Dennis Richrath), and we would hang out after work, shooting pool or having some drinks, and just being friends. Both great guys, down to Earth and just good company overall. Miss those fun and young days! R.I.P. GARY AND DENNY!!!

Now it is available again and we can enjoy watching it. Gary Richrath was one of the Best Lead Guitarists. His style and sound made him an Icon of true Rock n Roll. Gary Richrath´s playing was always melodic, rhythmic, balanced, sometimes at crazy speed, and at the same time it was deep, sharp and emotional enough to realize that He's so damn talented!!!

Two different bands. I saw them in 77 and 78. They were a rock and roll band then and changed to pop music in the 80s. Same with Foreigner , Journey ,Styx etc etc. They made it with songs like Golden Country and Riding The Storm Out.
@@raybruce9522 This is sad. A lot of bands turned their songs into pop ones though the real masterpieces were back in those early days before 80s. Even when I listened to the Journey´s Who´s crying now I felt the spirit of that time and it was kind of classic to me. Now I can listen to Back on the road, Golden country or Stillness of the night all day long and it won´t bother. The very first REO´s song I´ve heard was Riding the storm out and a bit later One lonely night . Since then a couple of their works are my favourite. Anyway I´m glad that there are still so many great and truly mesmerizing songs we can enjoy listening to

The thing is with a lot of the rock and roll bands it was hard to make it big in record sales but on tour they could fill fairly big venues and had a loyal following or rock and roll fans that helped propel them into record deals. Ounce there they went for the big money which was at the time ballets or mushy love songs for the masses and their loyal followers became disenchanted. The lead singer of Foreigner complained about this and the band broke up.

I had the pleasure of seeing R.E.O in either Pittsburgh Ks or Joplin Mo , right after T.W.O. was released. At that time they were a great rock and roll band.
Gary looked angry when Kevin was saying we make records the way we want without producers telling us what to do. Kevin did what he wanted which was ballads and Gary wanted to rock out and was pissed at Kevin's song selection.

Kevin and REO didn't want to kick Gary out of the band but it got to the point where Gary couldn't handle touring and album recording because of his sickness

But Kevin cut the bands throat by kicking Gary out of the band. The fallout was more over control and musical differences. Kevin wanted to do ballads and Gary wanted to rock. REO released 4 studio albums after Gary’s departure. They all sucked and REO never had another hit record. Gary was the heart and soul of REO. Now they are just a tribute band playing the old hits.

Kevin’s writing and singing is what made the band so popular. You talk about the records since Gary left which I still disagree, because I still think there were great albums. However, Kevin was let go once in the early 70’s and the band didn’t have success til he returned in 75-76. His vocal style is a big part of their success.
I wouldn't even like them without Gary. Excellent songs, but the cool guitar parts made them what they are. Ritchie Freeman a collector owns Gary's old Les Paul, and it isn't just the iconic 1959, it made all those cool songs. I loved how Gary would run his pick up the strings during his iconic guitar solos .
Saw Kevin & Gary in a hotel lobby after their arena show in 80s. They had a tennis court across the street open for them, for midnight tennis AFTER their concert. That's some rock star stuff.
Kevin had a great voice and the way he used intonation and enunciation with the lyrics really added to the songs. However, Gary was the main power in REO and it was his sound and his performance that put the band out front. Gary was very underrated but he was one of the best guitarists around.
Saw REO with Dave Amato a couple years ago, and man he was so generic. I’ve played guitar all my life and love slides, pick harmonics and strong bends, this adds true feeling to the music like Gary had. I like Dave, but how he ever got aboard with REO blows my mind. Gary knew how to make the guitar express his feelings, he wanted to keep the music true rock, Cronin was leaning to pop ballads, which created an obvious tension in the band. Without Gary, there is no true REO.
I regret not seeing them with this lineup. This was between 1977(when Bruce joined on Bass), and 1988(when Alan Gratzer on Drums, retired after 21yrs. with the band).

I have been talking to a guy for the last two months that actually met everyone in the band in bars that they played at. He just told me that he actually had a weekend experience with one of Cronin's ex girlfriends. Oh, I think I read somewhere that Gary really liked Beck and Clapton and they way that they played. I hope that helps.
I grew up in Peoria was in a local touring national band,named EARGAZM late 70S early 80S ,The two rival bands were Head East and REO we came close but disbanded

I am 100% straight but if I wasn’t he would be the man I would love to kiss if not only for his goodness and his power of attraction. It is very rare to see somebody from a distance I know that they are good. He is good. He is one of the most underrated musicians of all time.
Kevin Cronin brought a lasting quality to the group, one that has survived the hard-partying Gary. Gary was awesome, but I understand from some interviews, that he couldn't stop, and it ultimately cost him his life, and the band lost an awesome artist and song-creator. Kevin brought a good mix to the group. REO rocks....
Just remember that those "whimpy" tunes are what made these guys incredibly wealthy. I don't think they were touring because they just wanted to get out for some fresh air.
I never understood this band's ability to record a huge album only to follow it up with a dud over and again. Tuna Fish (big) Nine Lives (dud) Hi Infidelity (huge) Good Trouble (dud) Wheels Are Turnin' (huge) Life As We Know It (dud). Then Alan and Gary leave and they become a tribute band.

I knew and was friends with Paul Leka, who produced them, I never got a chance to meet him. He really wwas a great guitarist!

I never understood this band's ability to record a huge album only to follow it up with a dud over and again. Tuna Fish (big) Nine Lives (dud) Hi Infidelity (huge) Good Trouble (dud) Wheels Are Turnin' (huge) Life As We Know It (dud). Then Alan and Gary leave and they become a tribute band.
?? Good Trouble was 2x Platinum selling and Life as we know it had (2) top 20 hits. Hardly duds...
Bruce Hall really forgotten about what a singer My dad even enjoyed them in early 80s. He was actually 56 then.
Bruce got better with age.
Saw REO in 1977 and 1981. Honestly i enjoyed the 1977 concert better before all of the ballads and Kevins huge egotistical big head period.
hey first of all, and i swear on my life everything is Gospel. Gary went to Kevin's apartment. because he was looking to put a new front man. Gary fired Kevin. but he begged meaning Kevin. As follows, Gary, Roger, Bruce the who the hell do you think your trying to fool. certainly not I. you need to shut your trap. because all of you were on a high. High Infidelity was their biggest seller; and the album that wrecked the band. Pure Pop chick music. Cronin ruined the band the same way Dennis DeYoung destroyed Styx. RIP to the great Gary Richrath.
