    SPOILER WARNING!!!
    I am watching all Star Wars in Chronological order; I have seen the Original Trilogy but nothing else beyond the Kenobi so please be careful of spoilers in the comments.

    I always thought it was really cool when Kanan said "...there were around 10,000 Jedi knights protecting the galaxy." Really puts into perspective how big the order was during the Prequels and just how devastating Order 66 was!

      Yeah it's cool but so depressing too 😂 Order 66 was so much more devestating that what the movies and shows have shown but lines like these are amazing at capturing the impact of it.

    Holocrons are basically "living" libraries. They can even be imprinted with the personalities of caretakers (think like Jor-El, Superman's Dad). The knowledge they can hold is massive to say the least, from hyperspace lanes and cultural archives, to massive lists of people and hidden knowledge. They are very powerful.
    Edit 1: Depa Bilaba seems to have been a level-headed yet affectionate Master to Caleb. And they shared a bond slightly deeper than other Jedi, more like a mother figure to him. Seeing her die broke him, evidently. And he was all alone afterwards. I believe there is a comic run about Caleb specifically, but I don't remember the title at the moment

      Oh wow, so Kanan having this opens up so much then rather than it just warning him to stay away from Coruscant. Love that we're seeing his relationship with his master through how he is with Ezra, the parental dynamic wouldn't be there if Bilaba was distant and like other Jedi so I love so much that Kanan got to experience this form of training and attachment but of course it makes her death so much more painful for him.

    This show has done an outstanding job of introducing a new set of heroes and villains and making the audience care about them in such a short time. The writers even connected this unknown crew to the greater Star Wars universe via Bail Organa and Yoda.

    Yoda's self-exile and training led to him gaining omnipotence through the Force. Hence him already being aware of much about Luke when they first met.
    Since he appeared similar to how Qui-Gon did, the training probably involved some form of out of body experiences too.

    • @benspiller
      @benspiller  Місяць тому +2

      Love so much that Yoda was actually being productive in his exile and not just sitting around waiting for Luke, having him being aware like this and being able to help Kanan and Ezra makes me think he must have helped other Jedi who needed him.

    I’ll start with Qui-Gon's words, which add depth to these episodes:
    "I didn't turn toward the light because someday I will win some sort of cosmic game. I turn toward it because it is light."
    Ezra doesn't fully understand what the dark side and light side mean, nor does he grasp Jedi and Sith philosophy. This is all new to him.
    In the first episode, he's consumed by darkness in the form of fear, and symbolically, the giant creature represents Ezra's fear, which challenges the Grand Inquisitor.
    Plus, Ezra didn't remember it, he did it in a trance and was completely consumed by fear.
    The second episode is crucial for Ezra because it forms the foundation for his future lessons. The first thing he has to confront is his fear. The Grand Inquisitor is a literal symbol of fear, and every time he appears, Ezra becomes highly vulnerable to the dark side.
    Referring to Qui-Gon's words, you can feel fear, anger, and hatred-those emotions exist in everyone-but you can't let them guide or define you. Ezra is very vulnerable to the dark side, and the test was to confront that darkness in all forms, represented by the Grand Inquisitor. He had to understand that fear would lead him nowhere, and only by maintaining inner peace he could survive.
    At first he runs away, afraid of confronting his own fear. but then it changes.
    27:45:
    Logic: Ezra didn’t know if those illusions were real or not, but he kept going.
    If he had been led by fear, he would have either given up or acted irrationally, and he wouldn’t have succeeded. His words emphasized this lesson-Ezra decided to be calm - light, which helped him pass. However, the lesson ends there.
    Ezra didn’t accept the existence of his fear (the darkness); he just let the light guide him in that situation.
    In the end, we get a conversation with Yoda that emphasizes this. Ezra passed the test, but he is still influenced by his emotions, and he even begins to talk about revenge (avenging someone is a form of revenge). From revenge and the desire to cause harm, it’s a short path to obsession, which is dangerous.
    At the same time, Yoda speaks to Kanan, forcing him to confront his own fear of failure in his new role.
    As a survivor, Kanan likely abandoned the Jedi path to some extent, and I believe he might have used or been influenced by the dark side to survive at some point.
    Kanan's greatest fear is when he sees Ezra controlling the beast-he knows this is the dark side and knows exactly where that path leads. That's why he reacts the way he does. A normal Jedi wouldn’t react so nervously, but someone familiar with that path would.
    As for the temple itself, it clearly dates back to the Old Republic era. This is suggested by its location in the Outer Rim and its hidden. It makes sense, considering the Sith often built their empires in that region. Hiding the temple and its contents would have been crucial to avoid risk. Now, it's used as a test for Padawans, but what it was previously used for is up for speculation-perhaps a stronghold, a small temple aiding the local population, a place to train Padawans, or something else entirely. We don’t know.
    (The Old Republic trailers won’t show specific locations or events connected to Rebels, but they do add depth to past events, and we’ll see more references to that era like that one.)
    As for Ezra’s midichlorian count, this is speculative because there's no official list, and the information we have comes from either legends or observations.
    Windu likely had around 17-18k.
    Yoda and Palpatine had around 20k.
    It’s hard to say, but many fans believe Ezra might be stronger in the Force than Windu or have a very similar strength.
    For Kanan, I’d estimate 13-14k.
    If it were lower, experience would be more important, as in Kenobi's case, but Kanan definitely lacks that.

    • @benspiller
      @benspiller  Місяць тому

      Loved this entire sequence and all the detail behind it, the fact that Ezra has no idea about the Dark Side makes all of this even more dangerous as he has no clue he’s meant to be resisting it, Qui-Gon really put it best and I hope this is something Ezra will learn.
      I love how this Temple worked and basically highlights the Padawan’s fatal flaw in basically a simulation, now he knows what he needs to work on and can do it in real life. His journey through the Temple was amazing and I just hope he can become like this when facing The Grand Inquisitor in the future.
      His conversation with Yoda was so interesting, the desire to protect I think is a good base, but he still wants to bring harm against those who do harm to people he fails to protect. It’s weird to think that Yoda passed him even with this going on, guess it means Yoda’s confident he can get through it and still sees potential in him.
      Kanan was amazing in these episodes, these highlighted so much about him and his past and how that’s affecting his relationship with Ezra, him seeing Ezra use the Dark Side like this must have been terrifying for someone who has experienced it and managed to turn away from it so I can only imagine his desire to help Ezra grew so much at this point.
      I never even considered that this place would have been used for anything other than a test, it’s so cool how much history this Temple brings to the Galaxy and so fun to think of this place being used to hide things in the time of the Sith Empires.
      I can totally see Ezra having a higher force count than most seeing as he’s progressing rather quickly at an older age and already proving to be quite powerful.

    About the weird looking temple room with the circles: Interesting you picked up on certain things there and this might become very important in the future, but I'm not telling you more. Also Yoda comunicating with them at the Temple even though he is on Dagobah is something that will get explained later. Maybe him showing up as the light particles is showing his training for becoming a force ghost and he is already connecting with the realm of the cosmic force. I could imagine that you would have to dip your toes into the cosmic force and partially take the light particle form as practice in order to be confidently able to become a full ghost once you die... We also saw that Qui Gon first only managed to appear as particles and later as a ghost, but for Yoda this might be a little different, since he is still alive...

      Love that I'm picking up on all the weird stuff 😂😂 I think it's so cool that Yoda actually helped out here, makes it so much better knowing he isn't just sitting around doing nothing on Dagobah. Also really like how this displays his progression with his training since we know he's alive right now but he's able to do the same thing a dead Qui-Gon did.

    Ezra doesn't have a confirmed Midiclorian count (to my knowledge), but he definitely has crazy high potential in the Force. Obviously he isnt a Skywalker, but bro is (and does become) someone to be excited about.
    Also Kanan's master is Jedi Master Depa Billaba. Knowing Mace Windu was Billaba's master, Billaba had a seat on the Council, plus the moments in the comics, she was pretty good.

    The setup for Sabine's feelings about parents was also referenced during her episode with Hera.
    Sabine talked about being at the academy and people not liking her asking question, and then her being part of the team, there's massive gap there, all of which was prefaced with Sabine saying Hera is already aware of what happened back then.

    Kanan actually has his own comic series. I've only read the first few when I was quite young but I really enjoyed it. Kanan's progress is such an interesting development into the young padawan, to the young soul that lost his way, to rebel doing what good he can in a world out to hurt others.
    One way or another, Kanan and Ezra are more alike than many stop to think. Kanan is the reason Ezra never lost his way like he had after all.

    So, Kyber crystals CAN be found all across the galaxy, TECHNICALLY speaking, however it is EXTREMELY rare to find. Ilum just turned out to have had, presumably, an unusual high amount of it, so the Jedi used it as their main area for new Padawans to get their crystals from. The only other place I know of that might've had a similar concentration of kyber crystals would be a place named Exegol, but that place was probably SO hidden away, not even the Jedi knew of it's existence. The Jedi, having been around at least since the birth of the Republic some 25'000 years ago, with it's ancestral religion, the "Je'daii", dating back approximately 35'450 years ago. So the Jedi might have temples all across the galaxy, though the one on Coruscant was their primary temple, even if it's been trough some events in history, most recently, being turned into Palpatine's personal palace. So kyber crystals and other Jedi temples DOES exist elsewhere in the galaxy, not just on Coruscant and Ilum, they just turned out to be the primary ones.

    • @benspiller
      @benspiller  Місяць тому +1

      It's honestly so cool that Kyber Crystals aren't just located on Ilum, with the Empire in control now it would have made it impossible for new Kyber Crystals to be found plus I love that this made it so difficult as it feels so earned for Ezra.

  • @IggyStardust1967

    Hi, Ben! Hope you are well! I think I've said this before, but this entire series is indeed one very long, subtle story arc. While each episode can be "self-contained" at times, they all connect when you look at the broader picture.
    Also, your "Rebels" journey is just beginning, but another channel's journey is about to end (Melissa Hime).... but I look forward to both of your channels Rebels experience every week. I watch a lot of Reaction channels (and do a few here and there myself, but mine are more "nostalgic" than actual series), and love to see how you younger people see these Star Wars movies and shows. It reminds me of how **I** felt watching them for the first time. So, yeah.... "Nostalgia" is a big thing for me, but also "seeing things through a new set of eyes". But, enough of that... let's get on with it.
    3:30 - Ezra's anger here is understandable "in the moment"... but the reality is that Tsebo (I think I spelled that right) couldn't have prevented the Empire from taking his parents.
    5:40 - Yes, Chopper IS an Astromech, just an earlier model than R2-D2. Which kinda says something, if you consider that R2 wasn't exactly "brand new" in Episode I.... but Chopper is even older. Also, (not a spoiler, but some backstory).... Droids who do not have their memories wiped every so often will develop "personalities" based on their experiences. Chopper, like R2-D2 never had his memory wiped. Most Protocol droids (Like C-3PO) have their memories wiped regularly to prevent this, however 3PO does have a "baseline" personality in his programming.
    6:47 - Not entirely true. Ezra is "part of the Ghost family", and Sabine DOES care about him as a younger brother. Sabine has noticed how this is affecting Ezra, and wants him to come to terms with it. She has her reasons... but "no spoilers".
    13:55 - I was waiting to see if you spotted that comparison. I'm glad you didn't disappoint! But yes, Ezra did tap into the Dark Side there. Kanan knows it, and I think deep down it troubles him. Also, remember, Kanan was still a Padawan when Order 66 happened, so it's not like HE had full training, either. So, naturally, he will have his own doubts about his abilities to train Ezra.
    17:00 - I know you have questions, and while I can't/won't give you answers right now... I'll go ahead and say that your questions will be answered in time. I'll give you that much information, but no more. Rebels is a series that doesn't "set up" things like that without resolving them at some point. That's what make this show so damned good.
    21:30 - There are Jedi temples scattered across the galaxy. The Empire hasn't raided/destroyed them all.
    23:00 - Kinda reminds one of Stonehenge, doesn't it......?
    24:30 - Remember one of the earliest Jedi teachings: "Your eyes can deceive you, don't trust them."
    26:46 - Ezra, like the younglings in the Clone Wars episode, is having to face his fear. In order to pass the trial (test), he must not give into his fear. His fear is about self-doubt, abandonment and trust issues.
    28:55 - Remember in Episode V.... Yoda said, "A long time have I have watched (Luke). Always has he looked away, to the horizon, never his mind on where he was. What he was doing." Yoda is powerful enough in The Force to watch Luke on Tatooine from Dagobah, so he's strong enough to connect with a Jedi temple on Lothal.
    29:40 - The funny thing is, that Kanan also has issues with his own self-doubt, and fear of potentially losing Ezra to the Dark Side if he's not up to training him properly.

    • @benspiller
      @benspiller  Місяць тому +1

      I’m absolutely loving the structure of this show and these episodes were just amazing, love how these developed both Ezra and Kanan and added so much trauma to both of them, after this I’m sure Kanan must have touched the Darkness in his past and seeing Ezra go through this must have brought those memories to the surface which just deepens their bond as there’s no way Kanan will let Ezra fall to the Dark Side now.
      Then Ezra got to do so much, having him experience the Dark Side was inevitable since he just hasn’t learned about it yet so the danger was going to get him sooner or later, but then he got to learn of his fatal flaw, now he knows that he must overcome his fear if he ever wants to be a Jedi and this is how he avoids falling back into the Darkness.
      Also loved the seeds of info we got on Sabine here, it’s only crumbs but I love how we can just read her actions and gather some parts of her past.

    • @IggyStardust1967
      @IggyStardust1967 Місяць тому

      @@benspiller Yeah, the structure of this show is amazingly well done. It's why Rebels is my favorite animated series.
      I will say that we don't get a whole lot of Kanan's backstory, but just enough to flesh out his character. I would love to see a new series that shows us what happened to him between The Bad Batch and Rebels. (technically a spoiler, but a minor one)
      I will not say anything about Ezra "touching the Dark Side", except in regards to this episode. But do understand, as I commented above, Kanan has his own self doubts about being a capable teacher, since he was still a Padawan when Order 66 happened. I will say this much: We will get to see them both grow as characters.
      Lastly, "seeds" get planted a LOT in Rebels, for all of the characters. Seeds that you will get to see "in full flower". So, on that, worry not. Just pay attention to those seeds, so that when you DO see them "flower", you'll appreciate them even more.

    so for ep 9 yeah sabine's push for ezra to connect and learn about his family comes her past and even hera's push for him to learn about them comes from her how family history is. one thing to remember is that for force sensitives especially those who have often focus in the light side is that the dark side often feels cold like a chill or ice especially later in the series. they sort of hint at this with the luminara trap.
    on to ep 10 yes there were many Jedi temples across the galaxy the one on corasant was just the main temple of that era as they were many across the galaxy there were also many other planets with kyber crystals. Illum was just one of the earliest known planets found to have them and thus become sacred to the jedi, other locations that had them were the planet we see in the clone wars movie Christophsis, the planets where obi- wan and ki-adi mundi are when order 66 in ROTS is called in just to name a few. as you see star wars in order you will see other places but chronologically those are the ones we know have them from the prequal era. of the Original trilogy the only place that is mention to have both a place for kyber crystals and a temple is Dantooine. the place that leia gives as the planet the rebels are hiding on when Tarkin threatens to destory her home planet.
    now on to why kanan feels like he's not ready. outside of his incomplete training. pretty much he had almost completely cut himself off from the force after order 66. it wasn't till he met hera that he actually tried to use it. and even then those were often very small things. remember in the first couple episodes. Kanan very much comes off as if he hasn't really used is lightsaber in a long time until they are saving the wookies and is very reluctant to do it probably because he hasn't really used since order 66 and very few times before tried to adopted using a blaster. so it not just his training being incomplete but also he's rusty. Tales of the jedi and the first arc in the clone wars with anakin getting ashoka show that sometimes even brand new masters still need some form of support to help with their apprentices. of which kanan's closest form of constant support is the ghost crew and they don't really have much advice or experience in the force. he's pretty much in a worst state then obi-wan despite only just having become a knight at least he had multiple jedi masters he could go and ask help from when training anakin and even anakin had some of qui-gon's and obi-wan's teachings to lean on for ashoka.
    Kanan is playing it completely by ear hoping not to fail not just ezra but himself. and ezra is just trying to not just protect his new family but also himself since he has been on his own for the last 7 years remember he is just 14 when we first meet him. he has a new family but he scared to get close in the chance he might lose them but at the same time he wants to feel like he contributing and not feel like he's taken in because he's space Aladdin king of identity fraud. so for him power is sort of like how anakin sees it a means to protect those he cares about. but ezra's want to protect isn't just limited to one, two or three people like anakin was with his mom, and after she died padme and ashoka, it goes for his home Lothal.
    remember anakin wanted to free all the slaves on tatoonie but it was mostly because his mom was there. when does finally go back in EP attack of the clones he doesn't even think about freeing the other slaves. he had friends who were slaves too but he didn't go to them. but ezra wants his planet free not just his family he shows this when he helps free the farmers during his maylu run with zeb because they were family friends.
    on to Yoda waiting for Luke. Luke wasn't yoda's first choice of the twins for him to train. Obi-wan was the one who pushed for luke to be trained. when you look into the OT you can see more of padme's personality in leia when it came to pushing aside her feelings to focus in whats in front of her. luke's only trait he takes from his mother is the belief that anakin can be turned because their is good in him. Leia completely believes like anakin does in return of the jedi that there is no good left in him. you can sort of see it with how Yoda and obi-wan pretty much tell him to kill vader even after he learns that vader is his dad and when he refuses obi-wan pretty much says that if he won't kill him its already over and their hope is for him to teach leia without probably ideally without telling her their relationship. because they've completely gave up on him by that point. obi-wan only teaches anakin how to become a force ghost because he feels guilty that he gave up on him.
    I believe in both canon and legends anakin tries to contact leia after return of the jedi and she wants nothing to do with him even when he begs her she doesn't. in legends we sort of have her coming to terms and accepting that he is her father after learning about his past as a slave and eventually has a kid named anakin. in canon we don't have a moment like that with her accepting him at least not yet. if anything we have a major moment in canon that has her relationship to him actually screwing up her attempts to help the galley at large.

      Love how this episode sets up the story for Sabine! She’s been so mysterious and I’m just happy to get crumbs. It’s so cool that Jedi have this sort of alarm system like this where if they sense the Dark Side, they feel cold or a chill, makes me think back the Kenobi series when he was describing what the Light Side was to Leia so maybe this is how he’d describe the dark.
      Really like how this explored more history of the Jedi and actually explored an old Jedi Temple, it makes the history of the Jedi so much richer knowing that there were alternative and more dangerous ways of testing Padawans and obtaining crystals which actually involved and attachment between Padawan and Master where the Master would stay and die if their student didn’t return.
      This episode did a great job at adding more to Kanan and just elaborating on his past and how he feels about the position he’s in. Can’t wait to see him grow and develop alongside Ezra as I can only imagine how cool it would be to see a Teacher and Student grow together.
      So happy that Yoda has an active role in the Galaxy during the Empire and it’s so interesting that Luke was chosen to be trained because he was less like Padme, the Leia story sounds so interesting and it’s a shame that it hasn’t been done in canon yet but hopefully sometime in the future.

Not because the Rodian could have done something against the Empire taking his parents away, but it is crazy that he was a friend of Ezra's parents and he just let this 7 year old boy fend for himself. It's rough seeing Ezra's past get to him and his finally coming to terms with the potential they they're dead, aka, afraid of knowing, like he said. 🥲
    Buuuuut then his fear of losing Kanan and the crew, caused dark side to emerge. It'd probably happen with anyone though. You could tell Ezra was shook.
    I feel like if you could use that power but still for good it's not all bad, like with Windu. He could use dark side power but never turned.
    21:10 sounds farfetched, but that chorus part sounded like like what was played when Obi-Wan met with Yoda to discuss the missing planet in the archives in AotC. Similar to this too, they're trying to find some place.
    That whole temple series of scenes was messing with my mind. I couldn't tell what was real. Those floating yellow lights are also the same ones that floated near Yoda when he was being tested and when Qui-Gon was communicating with him.

      This episode was so emotional in dealing with Ezra's parents and I do quite like that we never got an answer to whether they are alive or not, leaving Ezra in a tricky position in whether to hope or not. it was awesome to see how both this and the fear of losing Kanan effected him and pulled him into the Darkness, and since Ezra is part of Mace's lineage, it makes me wonder if he'll be able to use the Dark Side like he did.
