    Since you talked about cis/trans features, my sister is cis but she's 6'2 & has broad shoulders cuz she's a rower & has actually been asked if she's trans (not often) and she just says "no, but my brother is!"
    Idk why I find that so entertaining but I do

    As a trans woman in the U.S., I just want to thank you for this video Chase. It is completely on point. And the word you were looking for for why trans women in men's restrooms is very different from trans men in women's restrooms is transmisogyny. Thank you again for this amazing video!

    I think the basic idea around the selfies of trans men in the ladies' room, is that a woman's first reaction to anyone masculine presenting in her bathroom is fear. I doubt any of her first thoughts would be, "What's in his pants, though?" At least that's how I've always looked at it. I had to switch from the women's room to the men's at school (started that way because I was unsure of my own safety) because I got to about 4 months HRT and was starting to get looks in the women's bathroom. Especially when I spoke.
    But I'm against the selfie purpose being to either intimidate OR threaten to be sexual towards someone. It's adding to both stereotypes (aggressive pervs or just sexual deviants) and it's not good. I think the focus should be more of a, "How would others react?" to those who "pass".

    I completely understand what you're saying. Because trans women are in the media more, cis people have started to pinpoint the features that are different between male bodies and female bodies and, whether they are or not, are more likely to assume a woman is trans if they have a typically masculine feature.

    As a trans guy in North Carolina, I'm so ashamed of my state. I'm now about to be in a position where I can't go into a public restroom without either breaking a law or outing myself without wanting to. Also, I really want to hug you right now, Chase, because you seem so upset about this and I am too and hugs help people feel more okay.

      ***** It's not a repressed fear, it's a logical wariness of becoming another victim of some idiot who is scared of anyone different from them and who lashes out at me for being different.

    • @alexcarpenter785
      @alexcarpenter785 8 років тому +1

      ***** Yes, other people have legitimate fears, but why is that being brought up? I mean, it's not like it's logical to fear trans people. It seems you're just here to bitch about me wanting to be able to take a piss in peace. Let me ask you, how long have you held it? Because I have held it for *hours* because I 1, didn't want to use the women's restroom, 2, didn't want to be a victim, and 3, didn't want guys around me to be uncomfortable about the small, androgynous person who seems to consider themself a guy, whatever they have under their clothes. Do you know how hard it is to concentrate when your bladder feels like it's about to burst open? And as someone who didn't have a say in governor McCrory's election because I was too young to vote against him, and make no mistake, I would never vote for a man who would take away my rights because of a Very Specific crime that was more imagined than real until the GOP decided to fearmonger about my people, I have the right to be mad at the others who live in my state for choosing a fearmongering, slimy, disgusting man who refused to even talk with a trans woman about HB2.

    • @alexcarpenter785

      ***** Okay, fine, my question still stands. What do you propose to do to treat us? Please tell me since you think you know so much, how do you treat something like this?

    • @alexcarpenter785
      @alexcarpenter785 8 років тому +1

      ***** Well, I'd rather *not* spend all my life looking at why I'm cast out of society, forced to pretend, and basically stuck between being a man and pretending to be a woman, so sorry for having a life. Actually, if you were trans, you'd understand why most of us know only a basic explanation of our condition; it *hurts*. It hurts to see our lives turned into some science experiment. Until I realized I was trans, I almost worshiped science, detested the idea that someone would shy away from knowledge, but when I started looking into it, seeing my own life laid out on a scientific slab was... It felt too cold, compared to the heat of the reality of being trans. But you being a cisgender probably straight probably male, you wouldn't really understand. You've probably never felt hurt that wouldn't be fixed by anything, not time, not love, not science, not *anything*. Because no matter what, we'll always be seen as freaks, we'll never have the media representation we deserve, we'll never see a character like us in anything do great things. No, characters like us die, that's all. We're just filler characters made LGBTQ+ so it would be sadder when the character was put down. You'll never suffer through that pain, feeling like you have to pretend to be something you're not if you want to be great, and in the end, the guy gets the girl, the guy never gets the guy, and the girl never gets the girl, and the trans person never gets anyone. Science can't explain that with anything that absolves directors and film-makers of their crimes against us. Learning why I'm like this won't make more trans characters appear in bigger roles. And it certainly won't get the right actors cast, so why should I learn something that makes me feel like I'm even more of an outcast and a freak who will never get their guy, girl, or enby? Who will always be a freak?

    You hit the nail on the head in the first 5 mins. I am still watching this video but I want to also add that those pictures of transmen who pass as cis, in the bathrooms are kind of fueling the idea that folks w. beards and mustaches shouldn't be in the women washroom. I mean, I get what they are trying to do but it rubs me the wrong way as well. This bill is targeting transwomen 100%, in my opinion.

  • @codymavick9068

    Trans women get made fun of more in the media than trans men (in some cases). Like in family guy and all of those other "comedy" shows every time they want to make fun of trans people its always MtF trans people. because of those shows people think that trans women are just men pretending to be women. It's so annoying and frustrating.

  • @yves9015
    @yves9015 8 років тому +6

    Regarding trans men posting selfies in the women's bathroom, it's ridiculous because a big bearded "masculine" man in the women's room is nowhere near as in danger as a transwomen in the men's room. The women's room is such a safe place compared to the mens room. Putting transmen in the womens room is weird and out of place, but putting transwomen in the men's room is literally life threatening, the men's room is like a death trap to them. And that issue is so trivialized with those transmen selfies..

    thank you for talking about this!

  • @kadyncaza7661

    Since I was a little kid I've presented quite masculine and public bathrooms have been a constant struggle even though I identified as female at the time. Pretty much every time I've used a girls' washroom I have either gotten angry looks or yelled at. Luckily where I live this isn't an issue but if I was forced into the girls' bathroom it would cause a lot more trouble then to just use the men's room where chances are I won't even be noticed. And everyone is like well a cis guy could go into the bathroom and say he is a trans woman and rape someone. But do they really think a sign on a door is going to stop a rapist? How about instead of banning trans people from using the bathroom they feel comfortable in, they work on actually doing something about it. We shouldn't have to live in fear, let's stop saying "it's just a part of life" and start educating people and putting a stop to it.

    • @ethanalexina1849
      @ethanalexina1849 8 років тому

      +Kadyn Caza You're correct about that. I never really understood it myself, how people think transwoman are just going to rape everyone. A sign won't stop rapists from raping people. Besides, if the transwoman was "truly" trans, as I do not mean to be transphobic, but am only using that word in the context that people believe someone has to be "truly" trans in order to use a certain restroom such as "oh what if they're just perverts who are crossdressing", the thing is, all of the female restrooms I've been in, I usually never been in one where the woman are half naked washing their hands. People usually just walk in, take a piss, wash their hands and leave. The transwoman aren't going to pee in sinks, there are stalls, woman don't see each other taking a piss. So what is the problem? People make such a big deal out of it and so many woman make excuses to why they don't want transwoman inside "their restroom", but none of the excuses are reasonable. People usually only go to the restroom to relieve themselves, you shouldn't make a big deal out of something that only lasts 8 minutes max. And sorry for ranting to you, I was just agreeing to you and kinda... ranted.

    I agree with you about those posts to a point, I do feel that people who are posting them are trying to help, but it is not transmen that are in danger. If a transman went into a woman only bathroom they are not in danger of being beat up, raped or worse. Where if a transwoman went into a mens bathroom any of that could happen. Luckly the bill was shot down where i live, and stores are putting in gender neutral bathrooms. I love your videos :)

    • @kgt616
      @kgt616 8 років тому

      +makeup momma women go into the mens bathroom all the time, especially if its a crowded place and the line for the womens bathroom is really long. Also, I get what you're saying, but you'e kinda implying that men can't be raped, beaten up, or worse. I think transwomen are definitely in more danger, but there are plenty of transmen who get harassed and beaten up in the bathroom, especially when a group of women gang up on them.

    I think you're absolutely correct. This bill completely infringes on the rights of trans women. Any trans guy that passes the socially accepted degree of masculinity won't be expected to use the women's bathroom - I cannot see anyone that supports this bill telling a trans guy with a beard and a baritone for instance that their place is in the female bathroom. I'm a Brit and watching this unfurl from across the pond has been really disheartening. I haven't heard anything from Chaz Bono about this topic which is frustrating. Are South Dakota and North Carloina really saying people like Shawn Stinson and Aydian Dowling should be using a female restroom? I don't wanna call it male privilege because I'm not sure that it is but there's definitely a double standard here. Trans women go through enough, this is absurd.

  • @Awsumatid

    I was actually affected by this bill cause i live in North Carolina. Because the administration at the time ruled that schools had to let trans students use the bathroom they wanted, they made me use the staff men's bathrooms, and there were none in the highschool building where I took my electives. Sometimes i have like, mysophobia episodes or something where i can't stop washing my hands and it was horrible because i couldn't go to the bathroom and i had to keep rinsing my hands in the ice-cold water fountain, my hands eventually went numb.

    I think there should be a bathroom for females (cis, and non cis), males (cis, and non cis), and a unisex one for anyone and everyone no matter how they identify. I think unisex would also be good for people who are trans who are too scared to go into their bathroom because they feel they don't "pass" enough.

  • @tristanshannonholmes2820

    I think I understand what you're getting at ( I'm ftm/dfab something idek anymore). I think it's kinda because with being transmasc people are just likely to see you as younger, gay (which isn't too off with me bc I'm bi), or just feminine looking. You might get some people making fun of you, but most of the time you won't get assaulted. No one really looks for it. Meanwhile throughout the history of media we've had the jokes in movies and TV shows of a man in a dress. MASH, The Boxtrolls, part of Mulan, etc. These are just three examples off the top of my head where men are dressing as women and it's seen as a joke to the audience. I love this TV show and those two movies, I do, but I realize that they are transmisogynist. It's very telling that in Mulan when her three friends dressed as women it was funny to me as a kid, but when Mulan herself pretended to be a man it was serious and inspirational.
    With transmen people are more likely to see you as a man, or at least as a person, but with transwomen society sees them as a joke.
    Again, I am trans myself and fully admit that I have privilege over my transfeminine friends, be them women or non-binary. People are more likely to see me as valid and will be more likely to see that I "pass" when I use hormones and bind than my friend Jade who is a transgirl and over 6' tall and has stubble if she doesn't shave everyday. If I wore a suit and binded people could get behind the fact I'm not a girl, but if Jade wore a dress people would be more likely to think she's a flamboyant gay man (she's a lesbian) or trying to break gender roles (again, she's a girl).

    Hey friend! I think you are totally on point. I'm also glad you kind of brought up nonbinary people and I get you're talking about a very specific issue of trans men playing into the sort of "sexual assault" vibes to protest the bathroom laws.
    But shoutout to any other nonbinary trans folk in your viewership who are super worried about the implications for us too. The LGBT/trans community are just getting around to pushing for gender neutral bathrooms, and these kind of laws definitely discourage that movement. I really think that transguys should be approaching this differently. Like maybe taking pictures in the women's bathroom in the same way transwomen are, more attractively instead of using the intimidation factor. Then it would be more like "I'm super sexy. Do you want me to be in here with your wife?". That might not make a whole lot of sense but I mean it in the same way as an attractive woman being in the men's bathroom. Play on the fear of cheating, not assault. I'm a transman in North Carolina, by the way and this law has done so much damage to me being able to live my life the way it should be.

    Hey. Hi. Hello there. Fellow trans man living in Charlotte, NC. Ok so. Literally North Carolina has pretty much been in flames since this bill has passed. Not lying at all here, the state is split straight down the middle. Transphobic people are just crawling out of the shadows now. I often tend to wear my Gender Is Over brand sweatshirt to work (I work at an open market) and since HB2 has been passed I get on the daily stares, dirgative language, people mumbling about me, I've been called the F-slur, like what the hell!? Just last week a trans woman was stabbed nearly to death 5 minutes away from where I live. I have been a part of the trans activism community here in NC for about 2 years now, but now I'm terrified to leave my own house. This past summer, I represented Charlotte at Brave New Voiced (youth poetry internationals) in DC and we performed a group piece about HB2. Dozens of people spoke to me after the performance asking if the state was truly in this bad of a state, and YES IT FUCKING SUCKS. I'm pre-T, and already worried about being stared at when I used the men's bathroom, but more so now more than ever. Some of my closest friends are trans, and in particular trans women, and I'm fucking terrified for them. People here will now be quick to say something transphobic, and if you speak against them they are now legally in the right. LGBT activists here in state like I are constantly pushing to change this shit. We are using the bathrooms of our identity, and if anybody says anything about it, we stay strong because we know where it's we are supposed to be.

    I also had a conversation with my Sister yesterday where she said she didn't want someone who had not "had the surgery" in her bathroom. I asked how she would know if someone had had the surgery? And if that in her eyes was all that determined if they were "man or woman" enough. When are people going to get that one's gender identity is not about what's in your pants? It's the first question people ask, "Are you going to have the surgery?" And this premise is the basis for these laws that are being passed. It's the idea that our gender identity is tied to our birth certificate, or to the surgery. I'm sorry but I knew I was a guy before I realized what genitals were. So I asked my sister, "If a guy lost his genitals in an accident is he still a guy?" Her reply was of course, "YES" . The bigger question her is how do we get people to understand gender identitiy? This same sister asked me when I was living as a lesbian, "if I felt like a man inside" to help her understand my attraction to women. She was satisfied with my answer then,. But the same answer now, as Trans is hard to understand. So I ask again, how do we get people to understand Trans and not pass laws against us?

Kind of like a using your passing privilege to make a point and an equivalent that might make people realize what they're asking? I haven't seen what you're talking about, but I think it could also be interpreted this way.

    I live in Charlotte, NC and let me just say how embarrassing that I live here. HB-2 was a bill that was poorly written and unilaterally propagated in under 12 hours. Whenever I hear McCrory speak of "common sense" legislation, it sends chills up my spine. Common sense is not the same as truth or science. Human sexuality is extremely complex and is by no means an exclusively binary system of male and female, gay or straight.. There exists sorts of variations, just like eye or skin color. The uneducated or willfully ignorant of the world are those that would have you believe that this is all the name of protecting women and children. I call bullshit on this "us versus them" paradigm. This is no us and them. Only "we".

    Thank you thank you thank you SO much for addressing the problematic nature of trans men taking the pictures in women's restrooms with those captions. I too have been so, so uncomfortable with this trend, even though I know the trans men doing this are coming from an understandably frustrated place because of the absurd and gross and dehumanizing nature of this whole law and debate. But trans men are reinforcing rape culture when they present their presence as a threat in the women's bathroom.
    I get uncomfortable too because I feel like as trans men, it's dangerous to make this about us when all of the rhetoric used by these politicians is solely about trans women. Yes these laws absolutely affect all of us and we should all be actively fighting them as best we can; however, I feel like it's really important that we all bear in mind that trans women are the ones actively being scapegoated, and they are the ones being put in the greatest danger of violence by the laws.

    I'm AFAB non-binary and medically transitioning to male. I use the gender neutral/unisex single stall all the time now as it's my little bubble of safety. I've a few unsettling experiences the mens room where it became painfully evident to me that I'm not "passable". I have a very androgynous "baby-face" and even five years on T, while I can grow facial hair, I don't like it, am actually getting IPL done on it. I went to a LGBT nightclub (of all places) and when leaving a stall there was a guy who had been waiting outside the stall with his friends, he took one glance at me and yelled, "What the FUCK?!" I ignored him and left the mens room. I SHOULD have reported him but I didn't feel like ruining what was otherwise a fun night or his night for that matter, unless he decided to make things violent or continued verbal stuff, then I would have definitely gone to security. I just more or less accepted that even if a club claims to be T-friendly, it doesn't matter if the 95% of the LGB community only see transwomen and drag queens and ignore all other transgender and NB people's existence. I aim to have an androgynous male body with a feminine presentation and since I'll be presenting feminine, one day, I will be using the women's restroom as there's NO WAY in hell I'm going to walk into the mens room where people will perceive my appearance as "girl" Even though I'm not a transwoman, I can understand the fear of being "clocked" and the fear of walking into mens room with the risk of getting assaulted.

    Whenever women see anyone even remotely masculine looking, they panic. Even when I wasn't out and dressing somewhat feminine, they'd look at me weirdly in the bathroom and think or say "What's this boy doing in the bathroom?" I'm out to pretty much everyone except my family, since they are incredibly transphobic. When I have to use the women's bathroom with my family, I often get yelled at or questions asked and it's very uncomfortable. Mind you, I am still pre-T.
    Anyone that is androgynous or masculine in the women's bathroom is immediately seen as a predator. It's sad for trans women and nonbinary people and even sometimes really masculine cis women since they all get seen as someone who's unwanted in there. I think society needs to stop assuming things. Women are women, even if they had a history of living as male. If cis women looked at the struggles of trans women and had empathy for them, maybe it wouldn't be such a problem. Imagine how awkward any trans person feels in the bathroom.
    And the fact that the bill is being passed by cis white men makes me mad. It doesn't even affect them in the slightest! They need to take a look at the situation without any judgements. Trans women just want to pee. So what if they had to live as a male once before in their life? They identify as female therefore they are female, whether they pass or don't pass.

    People judge femininity much harsher than they do masculinity. This is why sports reporters feel it pertinent to comment on a female athlete's clothing but not a male athlete's. It is due to this same stereotypes in our society that can make trans men posing in women's washroom feel threatening even though we understand that that is not the intent.

    Very well said, I agree with most of what you're saying. I'd kind of like to add that, just in general, the pictures of trans people in bathrooms make me kind of uncomfortable. I understand the intention, as you said, but they also support the idea that people's genders are obvious from their appearance, and give the feeling that people are only deserving of being able to use the bathroom that they're comfortable in when they "pass," which is obviously super problematic.

  • @BlackZephyr
    @BlackZephyr 8 років тому

    I understand what you were trying to say about how people "know what transwomen look like." It does seem to be a direct product of the media portrayal (mostly the negative) of transwomen. Part of the problem (if not the sole problem) is society's need to compartmentalize people based on male and female genders and the stereotypical physical characteristics associated with them. People associate specific characteristics to those genders and will automatically try to "sort" people into them, whether they're correct or not (and they aren't happy to admit they're wrong when it comes to the public restrooms).
    I also 100% agree with you that these "bathroom bills" do seem to specifically target transwomen. I've gotten into very heated arguments with people about trans people using public restrooms and they all say the same thing: "I don't want some man/person with a penis in the same bathroom as my wife/daughter." They never say anything about transmen. It also kind of astounds me that they don't see the problem with their own statement. They pretty much condemn the entire male population and insinuate that men have zero self-control or that a penis (no matter who it's attached to) is just going to go out and molest/rape women and little girls at every available opportunity. We're not concerned with lesbians sharing public restrooms/locker rooms with other women. It's only when there's a perceived penis involved do people start to freak out. It makes it seem like they should just announce that ALL men/individuals with a penis are horrible and will try to rape you, especially when you're trying to pee.
    They also seem to think that if transwomen are allowed to use the women's restroom that it somehow makes molesting/raping "okay." Last time I checked, that was still a crime no matter what kind of bill is introduced. It also perpetuates the completely ridiculous assumption that transwomen are "just men in dresses."
    Everyone has to use the bathroom; it's a necessary bodily function. It doesn't need to be interfered with by politics and unfounded fears. If we're going to target anyone in bathrooms, target the dirty politicians (who happen to be cis men) who have been caught soliciting/having sex in public restrooms.

    I think is because women are more sexualised, it doesn't matter if they're cis or trans. Also some people doesn't think trans women exist, like: 'trans women are just some form of perversion' or 'trans women and drag queens are the same thing' many people aren't educated enough about trans issues and trans people in general, but since trans women are so present in the media and so visible, they have it harder, and i think it's not fair.

    the mtf version is in fact more trans-women-empowering (via sex, male gaze, and straight-cheating-threatening stuff, but empowering anyway i guess) while the ftm version plays on the same male-threatening-mysoginistic stuff. as if because we're men we're going to threaten the safety of cis women, when all we're gonna do if we happen to encounter them , is looking elsewhere while sneaking away, hoping they don't throw things at us or call security. it happened to me before i realized my passing as a male was good, and it was one of the most weird things that ever happened to me, hopefully i sneaked out quicky enough x')
    well i totally went elsewhere but i meant i agree with you. i think we should try hitting empathy rather than fear. idk how to do that though. maybe we could send them pictures of kitties.

    I've seen posts that are like, a picture of a trans man in a women's room and it's captioned something like "Do I look like I belong in here" but I haven't seen the ones preying on the fear women live with on the daily =/ That's troubling and definitely not okay. I've also seen it said that those images, whether it's a trans woman in a men's room or the other way around, are putting the focus on how you look being the dictating factor on which bathroom you should get to use, which isn't cool.
    It's also been said that, in places where these bathroom bills are passed, cis men could just say they're trans to gain access to the women's room. Which is far more troubling, especially since, as you said, trans men become more or less indistinguishable from cis men once they've been on testosterone for a while.
    And yes, I hate it, too, but it's a lot harder for trans women to appear cis than it is for trans men. (Not that all of them even want to appear cis.) Testosterone is a helluva drug. It changes us transmasculine folks into what we want to look like, but it's damn near impossible to reverse the effects it does to you if you're a trans women or trans femme. If I'm "passing" after less than a year on T, an AMAB person who's had years of accumulated testosterone-fueled changes happen to them will have a much harder time eliminating or downplaying those attributes. Life in general is a lot harder for trans women, some of whom will never be able to look cis unless they get expensive surgeries to change their literal bone structure.
    These bills aren't about trans men or trans masculine people. I get the push to recognize that, hey, you're trying to keep "men" out of the ladies' room, but you're going to be PUTTING men in the ladies room by enforcing these laws. These lawmakers don't recognize that trans men exist, they are entirely focused on the ghastly image of a man in a dress coming to prey on their wives and children.

      +James Siebels The unfortunate truth is the "sex offenders" angle is (in most cases) an excuse to demonise and discriminate against trans people. Just like most pro-lifers don't really want to bring abortion rates down (if they did, they would support comprehensive sex ed), but rather want to punish women for their sexuality (poor phrasing but my brain isn't doing words today). They also don't seem to care much about the life of the mother, or that of the child once it leaves the womb. Similar story here, the people making these laws don't care about the actual reality of sexual assault. They just don't want trans people's identities to be validated in any way.

    You brought up a lot of really good points and ideas/perspectives i haven't considered or thought of. Yes, I agree about what you said about the media. It doesn't help as the picture may have a 2nd message that the poster is not aware of.Trans women are stigmatized more than trans men. I think thats maybe what you were trying to say. It may also be because people still use or rely on stereotypical traits of the gender binaries when seeing someone for the first time. I think you were hinting at this too. So when we see someone (especially trans women) breaking society's perception of what gender should look like, it is frowned upon. I don't know how to explain all of this either. There are definitely sociocultural factors. This law is really just causing more problems. The law assumes that everyone fits into only two categories, which is obviously not the case. People are diverse! This NC bathroom law does bring up additional important topics that aren't discussed much, which you have brought attention to.
