Pretty sure that's not the inspiration for Infernape, guys.
Its visual design is based on the Chinese Golden Monkey, which are notorious for loving heat. The inspiration for Infernape is almost certainly Sun Wukong (a.k.a. Son Gokou) from Journey to the West. The golden armor on Infernape is very likely a direct reference to the golden armor Sun Wukong gets in the epic, and there are a lot of other things about Sun Wukong (like his amazing martial ability, using all his limbs to fight) and being the Monkey King, that make that more likely. Also, Gokouzaru is Sun Wukong's Japanese name, and it stands for hellfire monkey.

+FinalFirebrand My first thought was also Wukong, but after this it's kinda more linkable to hindu mythology. I mean Infernape doesn't use a staff or something similar while the Ruyi Jing Bang was the staff representing Wukong the most.

+Helmslock While it think it a great idea for a video, the connections between Kid Icarus Uprising and Greek Mythology are a little too obvious. Anyone who took 7th grade social studies probably learned about most of the myths that are used in the game. And these connections can easily be researched on one's own time. But, that's just my opinion. :)

+Kin3sisCurt A British chap loved 99s, which is an ice cream cone with a chocolate flake added. He was eventually employed at GameFreak. He was asked to do a design for Pokemon Black and White. He decided to make a line based off the 99. He then made sure to add an adorable little face to the first one in the line.

The person ruth mcnally is talking about is James Turner. He was responsible for the creation of Vanillite, Vanillish, Vanilluxe, Golett, Golurk, Vullaby, Mandibuzz, Phantump, and Trevenant.

    • @mozillafoxer8489

+Kin3sisCurt watch the dex's episode, they explain it

    • @Salnax
      @Salnax 8 років тому +47

+Kin3sisCurt The Vanillite family is sort of a double design, Their design is based both on ice cream conses and the icicles you find in places like caves. Note that they would normally be hanging from a ceiling, so that their soft "ice cream" bits would covered by the harder ice of their bodies. This is referenced in the name of Vanillite, which vaguely resembles a stalacite hanging in a cave.
A recurring Pokedex fact is that these guys are usually hiding, creating a mist around them using their cold bodies. Naturally, they learn the move Mist quite quickly. They are also closely associated with snow, as opposed to more pure Ice. They will create powdery snow by consuming water through their soft upper bodies. The "straw" on Vanilluxe shows this best, acting as a sort of chiminey for mist to flow out of its body. Also, their nicknames are the Fresh Snow, Icy Snow, and Snowstorm Pokemon.
The trio each relate to specific kinds of ice cream. Naturally, they all have "Vanill" at the beginning of their name for vanilla ice cream, but there is a bit more. The small Vaillite's name could be a reference to Lite ice cream, as well as "stalacite." Vanillish, the middle form, is likely a slightly altered version of the Japanese name, "Vanirich." The "rich" refers both to the greater size of the Pokemon and the flavor of ice cream. And in English "lish" sounds like part of "delicious." Last, Vanilluxe gets its name from the word "deluxe," which in turn is derived from the word "luxury." That fits well with the "rich" middle stage as well as the more complicated design. Note that a banana split is considered a deluxe desert item at many eateries.

Also something that's pretty interesting is that Lugia might also be based off of the Japanese legend of the dragon god, Ryujin. Ryujin sits in the bottom of the ocean in a palace of red/pink and white coral. Lugia sits in the bottom of the ocean and its shiny is red/pink and white. And both are referred to as The God Of The Seas.

The whole thing with Palkia and Dialga being Izanami and Izanagi gets a little fucked up when you learn that Izanami and Izanagi were twins who got married (they had no choice, i mean, they were the only ones around at the time). Then Izanami died and went to the underworld (Yomi) and when Izanagi tried to save her it only made things worse for everyone.
I guess that's why none of that is reflected in Pokemon, it's a little too much.

Each paragraph is a time period. Also, there are one of each original legendary Pokemon, but they created replicas of themselves, though they are not immortal or nearly as powerful, but still rare:
In the beginning, there was nothing but Arceus, an all-powerful entity. He had always but never existed.
Arceus was lonely, so he decided to build a universe; he would create beings that would create the elements of the universe so that they could be their guardians. He would give types to his creations, symbolizing certain powers and attributes that would be.
First Arceus created Uxie, Mesprit, and Azelf to give a soul to these beings.
The universe needed strong foundations to support all forms of existence, so Arceus created Dialga to create time, and Palkia to create space. However, time and space were not connected, so Arceus created Giratina to link them into space-time, making anti-matter.
Giratina's soul became corrupted, as he was the most powerful being Arceus had ever created. With his soul, he gained a false understanding in the belief that he had the power to take over Arceus and his universe. After a battle for dominance which ended in Arceus's inevitable victory, the latter created Hoopa to create alternate dimensions, and to banish Giratina to the Distort World. Hoopa, seeing how powerful he was himself, and not having witnessed Arceus's undefeatable power, rebelled like Giratina did. Arceus had no choice but to trap him inside of a magic lamp. Because of this, Arceus decided not to give a soul to all creation, but rather to create an ultimate creation. It would by weak in power, but strong in mind, and be the only being to have a soul. So the god would create perfect conditons for the ultimate creation, and went on his way to accomplish his quest. He would grant the magic lamp to his ultimate creation so that they could hide it.
The next creations were Cosmog and Cosmoem, who would travel across space-time in the universe to generate all matter and energy.
Arceus needed sides of light and dark to the universe, good and evil. So he brought into existence Solgaleo and Lunala to create the Sun and the Moon, surrounding the future home of the ultimate creation. Even though he needed a spectrum for basic morals, evil was bad, so Arceus created Necrozma to slowly absorb all evil from all beings in the universe.
In time, the ultimate creation's home needed to be built. The god created Groudon to create the earth and Kyogre to create the sea. Though land and ocean were meant to be balanced, Groudon and Kyogre wanted dominance over territory, not because of their soul, which they didn't have, but because of their instincts. So they battled, and Kyogre seemed to have a slight advantage for the fact that he was a water type while Groudon was an earth type. Arceus created Rayquaza to stop the two titans, but they would not give up and gathered all their potential energy to evolve into their primal forms and go on to their mighty duel. Arceus blessed Rayquaza with the power of Mega-Evolution, granting him the capability of stopping Groudon and Kyogre. They went into a deep slumber. Rayquaza created the atmosphere as a protective layer to the Earth, symbolizing his role as a defender.
It was time to make life and death on the Earth, so Arceus created Xerneas to make life, and Yveltal to make death. Arceus would later create Zygarde to protect the ecosystem and guide the minds, not souls because they do not have any, of creations into the afterlife.
The Earth needed factors of weather to shape life, so Arceus made Tornadus, Thundurus, and Landorus. To bring dimension to good and evil, Arceus ordered Solgaleo to create Ho-oh and Lunala to create Lugia. They would rotate the Earth, creating night and day, which affected weather. Ho-oh also became guardian of the heavens, where it is bright, and Lugia guardian of the abyss, where it is dark.
Tornadus and Tundurus were insulted by each other's self-permission of entering their realms, and so started fighting. Landorus took on the task of stopping them. As they were occupied with their battle, they could not focus on weather, so Lugia made Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres to take over the mantle of generators of weather. Meanwhile, Groudon created Regigigas to move the continents.
Landorus realized Latios and Latias to aid him in his slowing of Tornadus and Thundurus's quarrel, as guardians of their winds, Eastern and Western.
Regigigas shaped Heatran, Volcanion, and Diancie to create magma, intense heat and steam, and minerals. At that time, Arceus ordered Lunala to make Darkrai and Cresselia to prepare all future life for understanding good and evil with nightmares and dreams.
Darkrai and Cresselia created Reshikrom, an almighty dragon, to symbolize the balance and union of real and ideal that they had created.
Arceus believed this was a good time to populate the Earth with life, so he sent a community of Mews there to evolve into all future species.
In order to better prepare the Earth for the ultimate creation, Arceus created Victini, Meloetta, and Jirachi to give luck, inspiration, and hope and wishes.
Xerneas then created Shaymin and Celebi to be guardians of the forest and plant life, using Dialga's power of time for Celebi and Palkia's power of space for Shaymin. Kyogre created Manaphee and Phione to be the prince and king of the sea.
As a last preparation for the ultimate creation, Arceus made Tapu Koko, Tapu Lele, Tapu Bulu, and Tapu Fini to be the guardians of the whole Earth, taking care of all that is.
It was finally time to materialize the ultimate creation, humans. Arceus odered Regigigas to create Regice, Regirock, and Registeel to guide them through time with the Ice Age, Stone Age, and Metal Age.
Years and years after humans were created, they were populating and taking over the Earth. In doing so, some happened to destroy the ecosystem, which angered Zygarde. So, he created Cobalion, Terrakion, and Virizion to be the Swords of Justice and protect the animals, which humans had called Pokemon.
Thousands of years later, humans had built two towers, each dedicated in honoring Ho-oh and Lugia. Once, lightning struck Ho-oh's tower, burning it down with fire until rain stopped this holocaust. This killed three Pokemon, which Ho-oh revived and granted great powers to to symbolized the previous events; Raikou to symbolize the lightning that struck the tower, Entei to symbolize the fire that burned the tower, and Suicune to symbolize the rain that extinguished the fire. Meanwhile, Reshikrom had been tamed by two prince brothers. When they had an argument, Reshikrom split into Reshiram, symbolizing the real, and Zekrom, symbolizing the ideal. The split left a cold, empty shell that was Kyurem. This dragon of sadness had a conflict with the Swords of Justice, easily overpowering them, so Zygarde created Keldeo to help them.
Three thousand years before present-day, an incredible war broke out between two kingdoms of humans in the region of Kalos. A man named AZ had a friend, a Pokemon which he cared for more than anything, who died in the war. From his anger, he swore to put an end to this fateful war; he created an ultimate weapon, which would use Xerneas and Yveltal's power to steal the life force of thousands of pokemon, sending a blast of energy that would destroy part of human civilization. The plan worked, but when the ultimate weapon was fired, a wormhole apparently created by scientists from another world in another dimension, to save their own civilization appeared and let a meteor through. The wormhole materialized there because it was one of the zones of highest concentration of energy in the whole universe. The beam from the ultimate weapon hit the meteor, shattering the outer shell, but leaving the harder inner core intact. Each piece of the outer shell was impregnated with the life force of a pokemon that was used to power the ultimate weapon, and Rayquaza's power of Mega-Evolution in the atmosphere. The core, which got power from everything, and now needed to stay intact to power all of the pieces of the shell, was shot to the region of Hoenn. This caused high damage to the land. Xerneas felt sorry for AZ and gifted him with a tree impregnated with his dead Pokemon's life force, and also granted him immortality. However, AZ have the tree to Hoenn to be forgiven of the destruction he had caused.
Thousands of years later, an organization known as Team Rocket wanted to create an insanely powerful Pokemon by cloning Mew. Many failed attempts created Metamorph, but they finally succeeded in creating Mewtwo.
Then, what happens is all that is in the games and in the anime.

Kyoto was the original capital of the Unified Tokugawa Shogunate. Its name translates to "Capital City". Tokyo, the new capital after the Meiji Restoration, literally inverted the syllables so it would have the same meaning and not have to change Kyoto's name to avoid confusion.

I think this stuff is really interesting, because the origins of these designs tend to repeat themselves across games and movies, especially ones from Japan. i thought it was incredibly interesting that one of the Colossi in Shadow of the Colossus looked almost identical to Yveltal (or actually vice versa since Shadow of the Colossus came first) and I'm certain the two are based on the same myth, but what is perplexing is i can't find any art that depicts the myth with that iconic tail shape. The only thing i can imagine is that Game Freak turned to Shadow of the Colossus for Yveltal's design, but i haven't found any discussion of that online.

The painting used of the man riding the "Kelpie" is actually of a "Neck (Nøkk, Nix)" by Kittelsen, the Germanic and Scandinavian counterpart. It's a water sprite who could shape-shift into a beautiful white horse. When someone mounted it they'd not be able to get off, and the horse would run into a deep watersource, drowning them.

There is an urban legend that the Regis are based upon the nuclear destruction from World War II, where their locations are based on areas that the US armies dropped the nuclear bomb back then, which Regirock's location represents Oita, Regice is Nagasaki, and Registeel is Miyazaki. Their designs are also based upon victims who got killed by the nuclear explosions, while usage of dots are based upon survivors who've lost sight from the nuclear explosions and used dot codes to read. Also the Pokemon who were the key to their ruins, Wailord and Relicanth are based from the nuclear bombs "Fat Man" and "Little Boy", and the Regis usage of self-destruct are based from that nuclear explosion, while the level of remembering Hyper Beam represents the date of the explosion of Nagasaki (Lv.89 = August 9th).

I'm sorry, but the second picture of the "Kelpy" is actually of a Nøkk, a creature also capable of transforming into a horse, but instead of living in the sea, it lives in lakes and swamps inland, it cannot gallop on water, instead it gallops straight into water causing the human to get a hefty shock(surprised shock, not electrical). It mostly targets children as they often are more prone to not being cautious. It is a well known Myth in Norway, and the illustration is made by the famous norwegian painter and illustrator Theodor Kittelsen

Cool video! The illustration used when describing the Kelpie (the one with the boy riding a white horse) is actually meant to be of the Scandinavian water spirit neck (or Nøkken, in Norwegian.) though. The similarities are many and they probably stem from a similar, if not the same origin, but the painting shown in the video is definitely meant to be Nøkken, as the painter, Theodor Kittelsen was renown for painting creatures from Scandinavian folklore.

Another, smaller connection between Arceus and Shinto religion is how in HG/SS you could take the event Arceus to the Ruins of Alph to go to the Sinjoh ruins. While it is meant to connect Sinnoh and Johto, the name is strikingly similar to Shinto, which, while possibly a coincidence, is likely a reference as well
And the only reason hacking is needed to find Arceus on top of the Spear Pillar is because the event that gave you an item to make it possible didn't happen, so hacking/cheating must be used to get that item (I want to say the Azure Flute...), which then lets you find Arceus on top of the Spear Pillar
