I met my wife in 1977 in a Tacoma dive bar on open mic night. She was playing guitar and singing mostly Joni Mitchell covers so well that I was immediately taken. When she sang "A Case of You" to the small audience she was looking right at me and I was a goner.
I listen to old and new versions of Joni singing this song and usually cry a little, but Tori Amos' cover is the best that I've heard since that night in Tacoma. Here's to Joni, Tori, and Sue (1954-1980).

I don't know how I missed this .... and I clicked expecting to be "so critical" but it's perfectly wonderful! Brava, Tori Amos. Her voice, the way she bends the notes on, "oooohhh Canada" is sublime.
One of the better versions I've heard. I like that she's musician enough to realize not to mess with the exquisite phrasing.
This is possibly the greatest cover ever. I have loved this for decades.

Joni es insuperable
Saw Tori live one time when she first came on the scene. A Joni Mitchell fan since the early 70's. I agree that this cover is amazing. Regret that I never saw Joni live. My friends and I would sit around each others apartments and sing all things Joni. Still do.

Very Tori. The songs communicative strength, however, is uniquely tied to phrasing that pays first homage to the colloquial lyrics. The emotion comes therefrom, not in runs and extravagances.

Tori's Bosendorfer has a life of it's own compared to Joni's dulcimer.
