This style of bed with drawers on one side was referred to as a 'Captain's Bed' in older catalogs. If you put ply on the bottom of the boxes it will keep more dust out, then you can also make the blind (no drawer) boxes with hinged lids so you then have somewhere to put all the out-of-season bedding without filling all your cupboards, just slide the mattress over for access . For drawer pulls I would use recessed pulls such as 'campaign chest' drawer pulls - but then again I tend to kick or walk into anything that sticks out.
Great idea, we made a similar bed with drawers on both sides, out of four moduals, held together with rails around top three edges. We made it to match wall hanging systems, popular back in the 1960"s that finished the drawer inserts with reed weaving with matching hear board. Great project, really brought back memories.
I've been planning on building a new queen sized bed for a while. Watching all the you tube videos builds. So far I've liked yours the best I like that it can be easily broken down and moved. I have a very small bedroom this would be going in to so having it modular would make it easy to build in the shop and assemble in the room. Thanks so much. Darwin looks really comfortable on that bed.
Such a marvelous idea ! Since I like to sleep on an elevated bed, 1800's like where you need a step stool to get up there, I would opt for some hanging with a set of drawers like my antique armoire, they are so cool ! I just might try to make one! Thank you !
I didn't like this build at first, but seeing it come together and the headboard really kicked it up. The only negative I have is that I don't like that wasted half, I saw a comment that said to make that area into a chest, and I tend to agree. No wasted space!
I am very thankful for the ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO that has been a tremendous help to me in building a perfect outdoor shed. I have been facing many challenges and difficulties for a long time, but this plan has guided me to correct the mistakes during the process. I am impressed by the projects and I express my gratitude to the creator of this collection of plans.
I think the open end is really inspired. I can see a twin version of this in a kid's room with the end filled with Tonka trucks or Lego bins or as a stuffed animal hutch. Might use paint in a kids room but that's obv. a personal design choice
I like the modular concept for this application. If I had it to do over again I might go this route for my bed. I felt following the idea of two sides with drawers was better at the time but this is so much more versatile.
Modular is the way to go. The concept is awesome. I'd put the bed in the middle of the room and than also drawers* on the other side. *Probably not drawers put containers on wheels/casters. Maybe I'd make the whole construction out of solid wood since plywood is terribly expensive in my country. Thanks for sharing the build.
You did a super nice job. I also wanted to build something similar to this. After thinking it through, I would make the following changes: 1. The drawers open too close to the ground. I like what you did to the rounded corner to avoid a knee bender. The drawer that low may be a hazard to your toes. Ouch. 2. I would also reduce the height of the drawer. I think a lower bed might be more comfy. But that's matter of taste. 3. I am not sure that first drawer next to the headboard would be very useful. Since people normally put a nightstand there which may hinder the opening of that first drawer. I love the modular natures of this build. Super Cool.
darwin is so totally cool. thanks and yes I would build this for myself. I haven't bought a bedframe in 20 years, every time I move I build a better one for myself. you inspire me and a lot of others I bet...
Thanks for sharing your work. I was having trouble trying to settle on a design for my daughter's bed. But you've solve that and the transportation issues. Awesome 👍🏿
Nice and simple design, I like the small baskets at the foot end! :-) The only thing I would change would be to raise it up an inch or two on a sub-frame to give the effect of it floating, that would look good I think.
Very cool design. If I do this, I would build the drawers in both sides of the bed with the open end. I would make the sides of the bed a little higher so that the mattress would submerged into the bed frame. And finally, I would add some LED lights running around the bed frame, but of course, you would make a top cover to hide those lights. I think adding LED lights would make this bed frame look more modern.
Nice universal design, I wouldn't change much other than what you recommend drawers on both sides when not against a wall. This is definitely going in my favorites for inspiration on our next need for bedroom furniture.
Awesome! One thing that could be done easily is to build a recessed 2x4 frame to make it a raised platform bed for a different look and to make sure the drawers wouldn't drag on the carpet.
My thought was to have drawers that are somewhat shallower, 3 modules at the foot and have the center one be pull-out to get at the space under the bed. This would make a good place to store things like my large tent and some collapsible chairs. Basically things that are long and not needed too often. It also might be possible to make a long, trundle style drawer on wheels to make it easy to get at things stored in this proposed space. In my case, the configuration of my room means the side of my bed is against the wall and the head and foot are both exposed, so I could have an underbed access panel in the head too. Obviously that last aspect would be very specific to this room, where there's doors in awkward places. If I moved, I probably wouldn't have access from the headboard side of the bed.
Great! I'm just planning to build a bed and this video gave some really nice ideas (modular! yay!). I would be a bit worried not leaving any holes under the mattress for it to "breath" properly; they warned about it in the mattress store when we told our plans to just put the mattress on the floor. Basically they instructed us not to cover the bed for a good couple hours in the morning so that it would dry properly from any humidity (humans sweat sometimes in sleep it turns out). After a year I build a simple rack using some 4x4 and slatted bed base, lifting the mattress just a little bit up from the floor. I don't know if that's a real issue, but I'd keep checking the mattress especially during the winter with your setup. Keep up the good work!
I love this build. This only thing I'd change is the hardware on the drawers I think I would hurt my leg walking by. But I'm clumsy lol. Again great build.
Nice build. I'd change the upper surface to over hang a little (1"-1-1/2") so heels don't bang against the pulls. I'd maybe use the inner boxes for "hide-away" storage. Like a small safe or seasonal. Vented of course. Overall a good build that's Darwin approved.
Awesome job. Your video has inspired me to build my own version. The step by step gave direction to be able to accomplish the project. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Blessing.
I would maybe move drawers toward end of bed so there would be room for a nightstand by the headboard. It looks great with the open area at the foot though.
four boxes with tops and bottoms. four drawers with a bottom and two short sides and two long sides. Sandwich between plywood sheets. Put fronts on the drawers. Add drawers slides and pull handles. I can't help with the headboard. Easy peasey. A drawer jig would help from Rockler or Kreg. A pocket hole kit, pin nailer would be nice, table saw or circular saw, miter saw maybe, jointer, planer, corner clamps. Just keep buying so the woodworking store has a Merry Christmas. It is an endless process.
Nice Design! Great job! For my own design 1) I would double bed base high so each sides would receive 6 drawers or something else (maybe a rack for shirts); "each sides", because as you said if needed to remove the bed, modular boxes would be easy to transport in a car... If you move out or sell your bed base to someone else, maybe it could be assembled symmetrically against a wall, with some room each sides, so it would be of benefit to get drawers each sides at conception... 2) I would check mattress exact dimensions before start the project or even make the bed base larger in order embed, like framed by bed base (NB: your mattress seems a bit longer vs bed base lenght...) ;-)
Great video. I made a headboard a few years ago and found the hardest part was attaching it to a standard metal bed frame. Also, this is a great solution for upstairs bedrooms. Once I helped someone move a Queen size bed into her apartment only to find the box spring would not fit up the stairs. We ended up actually taking the frame of the box spring apart, folding it up like a taco and re-attaching it in place.
I really like this, the only thing I would do differently if I built this; is to add something, like a border, that keeps the mattress from sliding off of the bed frame.
I agree, I keep watching modular bed videos for inspiration, with the idea to combine all the best parts of each video. It is also easier as a viewer to spot mistakes made that the maker may not have thought of in the moment. In addition to the frame, I would also make some kind of wooden "cage" between the bed and the mattress that allows for air flow under the mattress because we have a really moist apartment, it would also act as a way of binding the modules together.
great project, i'm going to show it to my sister I think she will like it and i'll build it for her, I think i'll make the draws bigger, thanks for the idea.
i built a platform bed once made of plywood rectangles fit together with slots and open all around. Biggest difference with this is that there was a long space in the middle of the platform where I could store my skis.
I love this - the concept of a wood built modular bed base is appealing - we have divan beds but they are cheap and poorly made. usually covered in hideous fabric, I currently have one of those hydraulic arm storage beds so I definitely would need a lot of storage space - love the build and your dog is adorable :)
The bed came out really nice I'd probably under the drawers a little bit though so you don't step out of bed and onto one of those handles loved the basket and open foot idea though that's what sold me on it
Beautiful build! I need to make one. It’s perfect for small bedrooms like mine and my husbands but all the drawers will be mine. Haha! 10:14 had me lol!! Your dog is too cute. He’s staring at you so intensely.
Very nice! The only consideration I'd make for a change is a nightstand would block the drawer closest to the headboard but I can't think of a way to use that available space and not need to move the nightstand.
I love it because it's what I need because I have three of my pets who sleep with me. Plus it is lower to the floor so my little dogs can jump up easily. By the way I love you're dog.
Very well done, my lady.😊👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 Only thing I’d do different would be to enclose the foot section with doors, at least . Having it open like that would be just a place for dust to gather. The way dust seems to gather under beds for some reason.😂
This looks great. I could not build it, though. I need one badly. I was given a beautiful headboard with no footboard or rails. It's the older wood that's not used much anymore... I just push it against the wall & use a frame that's not tall enough....
I like to post detail at the foot of the bed. Nice overall design. I need to build a queen bed frame in the coming months, and I think I'll use box design you have rather than rail and platform.
I would make two large drawers(each side) and for the top of the drawers I might put a thin 1/2 inch piece of plywood or melamine?(easy to slide mattress on and off if needed) to tie all of the sections together and use that for the mattress base. I am not a woodworker but I have watched a lot of the videos so take it for what it is worth. Consider me an end user. I would also like to have something you can ship flat and put together for a college student. Pocket holes make it easy to put together on site. I did not see a use for the open portion at the end since I am a male. Wouldn't you know. Function first. I really don't think it would add so much to have the decorator shelf part. A guy would not care for the fancy back either. It would have to be easy to clean and I don't think a guy would like the foam back headboard. I built a workbench that had 5 separators to support the top of it. It was a Ron Paulk design(He has a youtube channel). Really cool and lightweight. It has cutouts in the separators to reduce weight. That would be a good idea since no one would see them except when the drawers were open(maybe). When I built my workbench I added furring strips but select pine would be a better choice to keep the separators from sliding or bowing. So my idea is to have two pieces of plywood. Use separators with pine strips to stabilize separators.(glued to bottom and top pieces of plywood) Slip the separators in between the pine strips. Put on the top piece of plywood. Put your drawer in and add hardware. Ship it with a Leesa mattress and everybody wins. Ron Paulk partnered with a company to cnc cut the pieces with all of the holes in the pieces and a hardware pack was added. The company shipped the complete workbench and he got a royalty for each one shipped. He also sold plans for build your own workbenchers. While this is not a workbench the concept is similar. Ron also made two separate units so he could load and unload them at his job site with buckles to connect them together. Window sash locks I think. Just a note: a college kid just needs a place to sleep - headboard optional? Here is a link to the workbench idea. www.fastcap.com/product/paulk-workbench Since he uses two pieces for his workbench his separators run the length of the bench. Mine run horizontal since my workbench was a one piece bench. Okay, too much info. Hope these are good ideas for you. I did like your bed. Very nice. Not criticizing.
Innovative and efficient design, very nice. As an added feature I wonder how difficult it would be to include low profile roller casters with this design.
Agree...I built a similar bed and added wheels, sides to prevent the mattress from falling off, plus ventilation holes and an Ikea bed "support" to ensure that there's enough ventilation under the mattress. In this area, no ventilation = mold on those foam mattresses!
Very good video and design. I like it a lot. Instead of bright plywood, I might use a colored melamine, light gray or white. I'd keep the same design, it's excellent.
Nice looking bed! Great for eliminating dust bunnies. I do wonder if casters could be added, or simple blocks to adjust the bed height. As someone else mentioned cut out or flush drawer pulls would make a lot of sense. I could see myself getting tangled up in standard drawer pulls.
You could use some wood glue even though you use pocket screws. All joints could have some wood glue. That way you eliminate any noise that would develop by time. Just saying... And yes, some holes for eliminating the moisture would be great addition for the matress. Great project!
This style of bed with drawers on one side was referred to as a 'Captain's Bed' in older catalogs. I've watched alot of these bed builds and this one is the most clear and precise. Great job!
Me too

I like the fact that it's modular; not everyone has a truck. If I were to build one, I'd probably have shallower drawers. Thanks for sharing : )
No. You need big drawers to get the bed off of the floor.
I like the modular concept for this application. If I had it to do over again I might go this route for my bed. I felt following the idea of two sides with drawers was better at the time but this is so much more versatile.
Okay, I'm rewinding this over and over for the dog. He is so cute.

Hi Lynn, To me, this is one of your best design, build, choice of material. I really loved it. Cant wait for the head board build video. Cheers. Vijay
Thanks for sharing your work. I was having trouble trying to settle on a design for my daughter's bed. But you've solve that and the transportation issues.
Awesome 👍🏿
Genius design. Something I would definitely use especially for my boys room with those drawers. 💯

Darwin's Captain's Bed is marvellous. He is looking tired. Lots of work is rewarded with a nap.

Do you believe everything a salesman tells you. Sound like some b.s. to me? He wants to sell you a platform for your mattress.
Hi ,beautiful job😊 I been asking too long time ago to my husband to make one, soo I going to make one by my self instead.🤔
I love this build. This only thing I'd change is the hardware on the drawers I think I would hurt my leg walking by. But I'm clumsy lol. Again great build.

Great job! Practical and comfortable, looks like a winner to me! Love the design.
I would maybe move drawers toward end of bed so there would be room for a nightstand by the headboard. It looks great with the open area at the foot though.
I'm ashamed I have no idea how to do this and motivated to learn now. Great Video!

I dig it have been drawing up plans for a similar bed, but now think I may have to show this to the wife and build it instead

They have non-slip adhesive strips that can hold the mattress still, I haven't had them long but they're working well for now!
great project, i'm going to show it to my sister I think she will like it and i'll build it for her, I think i'll make the draws bigger, thanks for the idea.

It's nice and simple. I wouldn't change anything. Maybe a painted finish depending on the room.
This must be your best video in a long time. Seeing your baby dog made my day :)
I'm in need of a new bed, and also to make better use of the space under it. I'll probably be making something like this in the next few months.
The bed came out really nice I'd probably under the drawers a little bit though so you don't step out of bed and onto one of those handles loved the basket and open foot idea though that's what sold me on it
great bed! i think i will use this build. the only thing i missed was the center board for the boxes to attach the drawers.
Very nice !!! I will sure have to try to make it for my bed but would have to adjust the measurements for a full size bed
Beautiful build! I need to make one. It’s perfect for small bedrooms like mine and my husbands but all the drawers will be mine. Haha! 10:14 had me lol!! Your dog is too cute. He’s staring at you so intensely.
Nice project. I would replace the drawer handles with countersunk handles to avoid snagging.
chris forder I was thinking about the same thing.
Very nice! The only consideration I'd make for a change is a nightstand would block the drawer closest to the headboard but I can't think of a way to use that available space and not need to move the nightstand.
Im leaving it open for my cats to hide in since im taking away their boxspring and rails to hide under.
I love it because it's what I need because I have three of my pets who sleep with me. Plus it is lower to the floor so my little dogs can jump up easily. By the way I love you're dog.
This is SO functional and pretty! I love this!
Very well done, my lady.😊👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 Only thing I’d do different would be to enclose the foot section with doors, at least . Having it open like that would be just a place for dust to gather. The way dust seems to gather under beds for some reason.😂
my cats will love the open section... im probably going to leave a couple drawer spaces empty as well. They like to hide when company comes.
This looks great. I could not build it, though. I need one badly. I was given a beautiful headboard with no footboard or rails. It's the older wood that's not used much anymore... I just push it against the wall & use a frame that's not tall enough....
Looks great, Linn. Love the mahogany. Nicely done! Troy
Very nice idea and finish. Good job. Thanks.
Nice job ; I like the modular design for easy moving
I like to post detail at the foot of the bed. Nice overall design.
I need to build a queen bed frame in the coming months, and I think I'll use box design you have rather than rail and platform.
Very nice. I like the concept of modular.
I would make two large drawers(each side) and for the top of the drawers I might put a thin 1/2 inch piece of plywood or melamine?(easy to slide mattress on and off if needed) to tie all of the sections together and use that for the mattress base. I built a workbench that had 5 separators to support the top of it. It was a Ron Paulk design(He has a youtube channel). Really cool and lightweight. It has cutouts in the separators to reduce weight. That would be a good idea since no one would see them except when the drawers were open(maybe). Nice build Lynn and finish. Well done 👍🏼😊
I like modular concepts like these.
IKEA ;-)

Great build. Thank you for sharing. Could you please share and adjusted cut list for a king size bed? Thank you
Linn your skill is splendid and I love the video. Yes I'm going to make this only in king size.
Thanx
Awesome design! It looks really cool.
Very nice Lynn ! Love the open end with the bins, great feature.
Another nice video. Really nice idea about being able to move without a truck.
Very good video and design. I like it a lot. Instead of bright plywood, I might use a colored melamine, light gray or white. I'd keep the same design, it's excellent.
what kind of cordless drill you are using. It looks slick!
Your dog really loves the bed
I like your modular design best of all the designs I've seen. I'll think I'll make something similar. Thank you
Great Build:) This looks great Linn!
Nice looking bed! Great for eliminating dust bunnies. I do wonder if casters could be added, or simple blocks to adjust the bed height. As someone else mentioned cut out or flush drawer pulls would make a lot of sense. I could see myself getting tangled up in standard drawer pulls.
Nice build, simple and looks good. Thanks
Muy bueno su trabajo. Felicidades
El espaldar también lo hizo usted?
Great job, I enjoy watching you creat your projects. Love the accent.
Grande trabalho . Adoro o final com o cachorro .
That ws simply awesome. Found out the right solution for my bed too..
Awesome! You make it look so easy.
Love it! Modular, excellent concept.
Great job. Got me thinking about a few things
good idea building it in sections like that that's how id do it too..seeing my space is very limited..
I love this. I need to have my husband help me build this for our bed.
You could use some wood glue even though you use pocket screws. All joints could have some wood glue. That way you eliminate any noise that would develop by time. Just saying...
And yes, some holes for eliminating the moisture would be great addition for the matress.
Great project!
exactly what i been looking for thanks for sharing
Plenty smart. Greetings from Brazil.
thank you dear for the cut list. With the price of wood I well be building this frame one box at a time.
Good job you took away my doubts on doing one
Its nice bed ease and comfort altogether...
Could you also post a video on Kitchen base cabinets with cutlery sets , how its made and installed
Really good project. How bout extending the bed to make/include a blanket box at the bottom?
Love the project, and love your dog! Awesome!
