Great video! I remember the Empire Builder from around this time (96-00) would have a mix and match of older engines and newer ones and same with the cars.
Amazing! The Dash 8's were hard to run, and the F40's were the best. A friend of mine, a former engineer told me this. I LOVE F40's, I wish they would bring them back.
The signal in the beginning of the video was taken out sometime around 1999-2000 and wasn't replaced. I believe it was just a distant signal warning of the SOO (now DM&E) diamonds ahead. The searchlight signals at the actual diamond were taken out in 2009.
The first section of the train is the Zephyr (Emeryville). Attached to it are the through cars from the Desert Wind (Los Angeles) and Pioneer (Seattle).
That train almost looks like it is doubled up, as in it looks like two trains in one. I think I see two diner cars and almost two train sets on one train. Odd, I wonder why they did this with the train. And to top it off, Dash 8 with Pepsi can paint! Once in a life time video right here!

the desert wind and pioneer were discontinued in 1997 due to fininacial cutbacks

I wish more Americans will realize if the planes were short cut, they should have ride on trains with more than 15 cars for the long distance routes.
That explains it! I totally forgot that the desert wine and pioneer rand during that time frame.
James Davey They sure did! Amtrak would separate the sets in Salt Lake City and in Denver.
good, real good video. Never seen the Zephyr and Pioneer and Desert Wind all in one train

Is it me, or does that F40PH have a 3rd generation K5LA
Leonardo Viramontes Horns don’t have “generations”.
They have note, number, year and/or letter designations.
That F40PH has a 1990’s K5LA on it.
Trinity Court Studios Nothing wrong with educating people, but there's no need to be a condescending jackass about it. thanks for the info!
The F40 in this video wears a Mid-late 80s WF Smallbore K5LA. Soundwise I believe this to be the #322
are those old search like signals still there??

the rails also do not look as good as they do now!
PEPSI CAN!
