    So happy to help, Dani! I randomly made this video for a friend who was struggling with teaching long division to her 4th graders. I never thought anyone else would watch it. : )

    Thank you SOO much for posting this!! My daughter was instructed to use this method on her homework, but she didn't understand, and I had never seen it before. Your help gave her the biggest smile I've seen when homework is involved :) Thanks for helping it "Click" for the both of us!!

    I am a homeschooler, my son is reluctant to division because he couldn't understand what was happening.... VIOLA! He gets it, he gets it!!! Honestly, I never understood the algorithm, though I did pretty well in school, WAY back in the day.... Thank you from both of us! Best explanation I've ever seen on division!

    Kelly: This was, by far, the best video on the base10 block for divisions. The concept is now really easy to share with kids that do not yet understand it. My 4th grader is no longer afraid of divisions. Even I can now do mental division with large numbers. I hope Kelly has posted more of her math videos on UA-cam. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge.

    I swear, with Covid and schools closed parents are having to explain this stuff to their child. Honestly I never learned this way. Amd school shut down to quick for my daughter to learn. I had her watch this video as her school work asks her to show her work using base 10 blocks... she didn't need help after watching.
    Amazing explanation even years later!

    Hi Kelly, I am in a Post Grad. course in Primary (elementary) teaching here in Perth, Western Australia. This is a FANTASTIC video. You've done a great job. My main thing is: here you are doing something positive for the world, and still these dropkicks have nothing to do but put you down, as though they could do a better job. Pay no mind to them - as educators, WE know about the global decline in Numeracy and Literacy, which has been the impetus for us to find new means of illustrating maths concepts. As I said, never mind these mean individuals: their comments say more about them than about you B)

    I really appreciate this video. As a 6th grade teacher who has to review long division with students I wish more lower grade teachers would teach this way. The only thing that could be better is to use actual base 10 blocks, but that is difficult through a youtube video. You may use base 10 blocks in your classroom for all I know. Great job.

Thank you so much ma'am

      it's the same as this way, but with 12 circles instead. or you could just do the long division and get a remainder of or move into tenths, hundreths, thousandths, etc.

    Instead of "bringing down" the 3 (and subsequently 2), it may be clearer if you wrote 400 (not just 4 in the hundreds column), and then subtracted the 400, to show 132 remains etc.

    • @KellyHeartsMath
      @KellyHeartsMath  8 років тому

      Agreed! Showing place value can definitely be helpful. In this video I was trying to bring understanding to the traditional algorithm used in the United States but I like using the scaffolding method with students because it reinforces the idea of place value and repeated subtraction.

    Kelly, you might draw a picture & show the rectangle is 4 across & 133 down; for a problem like this it would be fast & EZ to use four 100 strips, two 10s, & 12 units...then they can really SEE that that division sign is short hand for rectangle & if one side is 4 & the whole thing is 532, then the other side HAS TO BE 133...
    Check out my blog & website showing division & percentages algebra too! Especially the algebra...& not just x², 3rd & 4th power too.
    Just search Crewton Ramone

    Wow, no wonder my daughter is lost. This is utterly ridiculous. They are making things much more confusing. Parents cannot help their kids and kids are lost because they are drawing pictures in math, as opposed to using actual numbers. The standard long division method is not confusing at all. It is incredibly straight-forward. If kids don't understand traditional long division....PRACTICE!! And practice more. There are no shortcuts in math and I wish our system would finally realize that. No wonder schools are performing so poorly. And I'm stuck on UA-cam trying to learn this nonsense. Thanks for trying to explain though. I'm grateful there's something to view, since I'm forced to learn this stuff for my daughter.
