Sharpening CPM10v From Dull To Pushcutting Newsprint One Take

  • i take the infamous cpm 10v and destress the edge by cutting the edge off on a stone and then with two lansky stones, a 600 grit and a 1000 grit and i free hand sharpen the knife back to the sharpness needed to do a 90 and 45 degree pushcut on newsprint which i demonstrate on camera in one uncut take. the sharpening is much faster when i don't do the destress as i typically feel that the coarse grit does well on the destressing part and i typically sharpen coarse then fine to finish. ive been carrying this knife for 4 months and have used it from everything from gutting fish and skinning deer to opening tin cans and packages. it's a heck of a work horse of a knife and i highly recommend it for light to medium cutting.

I've been watching your vids for years now.. and the camera quality has always been subpar. That said, this is still my favorite knife channel.

thank you! your comment is much appreciated!i keep trying these nikon coolpix cameras hoping one will do the trick but, sadly i think theyre more geared towards taking nice still pictures rather than high quality video. i hope to get a proper camera one of these days.

I think that would have taken me a couple of hours to 10v that sharp :) Pretty impressive sharpening abilities. Thanks for making this video.

Chumgeyser I'll have to do one where I don't destress the edge first. It's much quicker. Thanks for the compliment buddy!

Don't do that. The ghost of Cliff Stamp will haunt you for leaving weakened metal at the apex ;)

Chumgeyser this steel is too impressive to leave weakened steel at the edge

What's the reasoning for distressing the edge? Does it minimize the chance of chipping.

it's to remove wear stressed steel from the edge so a new stronger edge can be made from the undamaged steel beneath.

knives save lives thanks. I've been sharpening my own knives for a few years but I've never done this before. Perhaps next time I sharpen them I will.

i don't feel it's necessary but, may help to keep the edge retention up.
