Cannot thank you enough for this video. As a small, two member production team with a tight budget, this answers so many questions. Thank you! Seriously! We FINALLY have field recording without breaking the bank account 🫠
I need to document/record noise that is produced by an HVAC (Air Conditioner) while it is running from about 8-10 ft away. I tried to record the noise with my phone, but the recording is not clear and the recording does not sound like when you hear the noise in person. Should a mic be used with this recorder to capture the noise? If yes, which mic is recommended? Perhaps a (directional) boom mic? I might use the Zoom H6 recorder. I might try using the Zoom SSH-6 Stereo Shotgun Microphone Capsule with Hairy Windscreen with it. I thought about the Rode NTG5, but that is a bit out of the budget that I want to spend.
my guess is it's posible your phone could have some built in noise reduction that makes it not sound correct (since it might be built to try to remove/minimize sounds like this). Any of the other options you mentioned should work fine. The built in mics on the H6 would do great.
Wow, genius, and you've almost solved all of my problems. Last question for you my friend, how did you mount the m/s capsule underneath your rycote blimp like that, that's genius
I use 5 diffrent shotgun mics depending on what I'm recording (Schoeps CMIT MINI, DPA 4017 B, Sennheiser MKH 416, Rode NTG-3, Sony C-74) most often use the CMIT, though they are all great mics.
In this set up:
Zoom H6
with Zoom ECM-3 cable extender (I shortened this cable)
Rycote W4 Kit
Ambient quiklok(s)
Manfrotto 5001b
K-Tek short boom
pole
Articulating Arm - CAMVATE 7" Articulating Magic Arm V1(Red)
Adapter - XCSOURCE 5 Pack 1/4" 3/8" Tripod Mount Screw Convert Adapter Flash Light Stand Spigot LF601

So, the 'box' attachment on the end of the H6 is just the connector for the cable? Hard to tell in the quick shot of it.
dose this picture help? www.dropbox.com/s/0xevzjqlyhzgkl2/ZoomH6_Rig_01.jpg?dl=0
the box at the top of the H6 is the cable extender "Zoom ECM-3 cable extender" the picture link above should help make that a bit more clear ;-)
Yeah, that pic certainly helps. Thanks!

How do you handle rain, what do you cover your gear with that doesn’t interfere with the sound quilts? Thanks
thank so much for these videos. please consider adding strips of hunter orange (tape or cloth) to your gear and self when in the forest?
