I bought one about 2 years ago for the very same reason. To have a backup if my FoodSaver failed or couldn't be used for some other reason. A FWIW. I also save used canning jar lids. Undamaged ones can be used to vacuum seal dry foods. If a lid doesn't seal, toss it and use another one. That saves my new lids for pressure or waterbath canning. At times, over the last few years canning jar lids have been as scarce as hen's teeth.
