Ever since the Hypervenom days, the Phantom series from Nike has seen some major ups and downs! While I know some people really like them, the Phantom GT or GT 2 really weren't my cup of tea, and the sales really reflected that. Not bad, but nothing special. Nothing exciting. Enter GX.
In today's video we take a closer look at the GT's replacement, the Nike Phantom GX Elite, a football boot that maintains the same basic concept of "control" by way of added grip on the ball, but does so using Nike's new GripKnit technology! But that's not all. There's a new focus on comfort, mid and low cut variations that actually offer something different, along with new soleplate and stud pattern tooling! It's definitely new and exciting, but is it actually any good? Is the Phantom series back? I do my best to answer these questions, as we breakdown exactly what the Phantom GX is all about. But on a more serious note. I managed to get me a pair. And I am amazed by these. It feels so free and natural. The Gripknit is already my favorite knitted upper, from any brand or model. Coming from a very heavy Mercurial user, I was satisfied with its lockdown and fit. I’m sure these will be very, very popular and fondly remembered down the road. Feels like Nike is back on its A game.
i really like the zoom unit in the new mercs, especially playing on alot on AG. will try these when the AG soleplate releases

how is the shooting compared to the mercurials? just want a pair i can do shooting days with
@@Kai88988 it’s more padded than a Mercurial. But it’s still a thin upper. And there is that extra bit of grit and stickiness. It’s very satisfying shooting or doing any sort of touches.
18.2 dinosaur skin my predators kills this knitted upper as far as control.
I had my first match with the GX yesterday and it was crazy how well the grip nit worked. The ball would just stop at my feet at some points. I am not used to playing with a boot with that much control, it will definitely take some time to get used to, but I am pleasantly surprised.

Managed to get a pair. It's totally different from the GT line, and I am impressed! The upper is so soft and the mid foot is not that tight. True to size is the way to go. Fun fact - these colorway is Made in Bosnia - where Nike made the boots for the pro players like the factory in Montebelluna. After this limited release, Phantom GX will be in mass production in Nike Factory in China/Vietnam - hopefully the quality will not drop.
I guess its what suits ,but i like the fact the nike logo is slippery because when i push the ball out to the side I don’t want grip slowing that down. But grip in the other side is useful for first touches and passing..

@@saadimziri5123 if you have a narrow foot you might get away with half size down but your toes will be at the end with no room

good idea, maybe he can make it a series comparing models from each lineups and highlight the GOAT, like OG Hypervenom from phantom, f50/speedflow from Adidas Speed category, and idk what the best tiempo is
I for one, much prefer both the GT and the GT2 over this. I think the GT series is a little misunderstood, it isn't a bad boot, it just depends on what you're looking for in a football boot and for me, it ticks all the boxes.

Can you review the DF version? Apparently the heel isn’t as loose as the low cut variation which potentially results in a more locked in fit
I didn’t find the heel to be loose on the Lows, but yes, I will be reviewing the DF model too.

Can you revisit these with a play test? I have noticed some interesting quirks after playing a couple months. They disappointed me in wetter weather. Socks easily got wet, and the shorter studs didn't bite on the damp grass.

Josh knows more about boots than Nike, Adidas and Puma shoe designers, not sure how he hasn't gotten an offer from them.

I love the fit and feel of the phantom venom elites, I have been unable to find any boots that feels similar. How do these compare to the venom? If they are not close is there any other boots that are similar.
The outsole reminded me of the Diadora RTX 14.
Is it comparable to Future Z? I'm using Future Z 1.1 now and love it and this one also caught my attention. I'd love to try one.

I got a pair of vapor 15 pro with the ag stud patter since i wasn't able to afford myself the vapor 15 elite version with the same stud patter, hope it will feel as good as the elite version just without the zoom unit.
The only thing that I don’t like about these is that they have such a low toe box. I ordered them in my usual size and even tho everybody says that they run a size long they squeezed my toes and I had to order half a size bigger. I just hope they fit now.
Did you get the chance to test them yet? I faced the same issue, where true to size squeezes my toes, while half a size bigger seems to be a bit too long so I really can't decide. I wouldn't want a sloppy fit
@@midihenry I tested them today for the first time half a size bigger and they’re amazing. A tiny bit wide since I have really narrow feet but I just wear 2 socks and it works fine. I like wearing 2 socks and I have been doing it for a long time so I don’t have a problem with that.

I am gonna test them a couple of days longer, and see which is best. I am used to playing with adidas boots and it seems that my adidas size falls inbetween.
If they would require wearing 2 socks that would be a dealbreaker for me, as I usually wear grip socks that are a bit thin. I guess sometimes, it's just not the boot for you and you have to accept that
@@minty17k24 I ended up taking your advice and ordering the 1/2 a size bigger again. They sure feel much better, more comfortable but not too big. The extra space is actually comparable to my current predator freak pair. I didn't have to wear 2 socks though, so it seems the smaller size was just too small for me.
The key was to only try them in the evening, when my feet are a bit swollen.

@@midihenry Alright man no problem. I usually wear normal thin football socks and on top of that grip socks and i like this snug compressed fit but I understand that that’s not for everyone.

Apart from the gripknit, which seems more than the Future's upper, but you have said a lot of the same words to describe each, comfort, sock-like, flexible, slightly padded, etc. How do they stack up against each other?

In terms of “padding “ would you say it’s similar or more than the f50 adizero remake? I love the padding in the forefoot it’s not too much but it’s not too little.

I’m not fully sure but I think in that in the near future Nike will release more colour ways and a by you option for the phantom gx.

Josh, what's your take on wearing some "old" football boots? I found a pair of Puma v1.11, Nitrocharge 2 and Wave Ignites 2/3, of which I didn't get to experience when they were readily available. I worry that the glue has degraded and so is the rubber. The v1.11 seems to hold up well given that the upper and sole is triple-=stitched, but there's still glue to think about.
All in all, I am just not a fan of the sock-like feeling of the modern football boots, and kangaroo leather gives me that un-responsive, over-stretch and bonding issues (leather- upper plastic sole) worry. What are your thoughts on these?
Josh can you please tell if it affects speed as in the stud patterns , I'm a speed boot fan and I want these but are unsure will the stud pattern slow me down slightly

Hey Josh , is the Nike Tiempo Legend 9 similar to Nike Tiempo Legend 7?
No
No, I have both. The upper on the Tiempo 7 is more structured, and the entire boot is more responsive. Also the Tiempo 7 takes longer to break in then the Tiempo 9. The Tiempo 9 is less responsive, and the upper has more freedom. Tiempo 9 is easier and faster to break in.

Actually the only nike boot besides the tiempo ix that has interested me in a while, vapor xvs would have been good with any more pliable upper, but waaaay too stiff to justify the good soleplate
Agreed, but that zoom unit kinda puts me off balance ngl. Like it just feels round under my feet, like I'm walking on a half circle. I chose the new balance tekela v4 pro over the vapor 15s after trying both of them out in-store sprinting and dribbling.
