That is a soldering iron. You use that to heat up metal solder, which attaches the wire to the LED lights.

Yes, with a hard cricket ball hitting the stumps at speed would crack the pipes. I recommend only using soft balls, or using strong pipes.

There is no positive or negative end. It doesn't matter what side you hook it up.
