  • We've never tried control line plane flying before so our good friend Dan from Wisconsin brought his with him and decided to let Nate have a go! What an adrenaline rush! All we can say is now we have to get one of our own so Abby can try too! Thank you so much Dan for letting us fly, and soft crash your awesome plane!

I fly both control line and RC planes and love them both. I have found that the best way to get everyone to stop flying RC is to fire up one of my control line stunt planes and tear up the pattern. There is something about the tactile feel of control line stunt you don't get from RC that really intrigues me. You can actually feel what the plane is doing and it just kind of talks to you throughout the flight.

Looks like you experienced some fun handle time. Flite Streaks was designed by George Aldridge same guy that designed the Nobler. Be careful or you might get hooked. Control Line National championship is flown every year at the AMA NATs.
Like with RC a trainer pilot should have been on the handle with you. Because your already a model pilot you would have got the hang quickly and not have crashed. I have taught kids and adults at Oshkosh Kidventure. Never a crashed plane. Have fun.

Not as easy as some think, I have reintroduced, myself to this flying 3 years ago, did it as a child with Cox planes, then went to R/C and raised a family. It is challenging 😃

My dad was really into this in the 50s. He flew combat, stunt, and speed planes (off a dolly) and competed in the Nats in 1955? I know he was very proud of his trophy! He also built and flew 'free flight" airplanes (Like the Buzzard Bombshell) then as well. I actually did some as a young child also long before ever flying RC.

My brother used to fly line control all the time. I did buy a cox F4U Corsair and had a blast flying it. I actually designed a self launcher for it to keep the nose up as it taxied. I flew that plane for a while till I wrecked it. After that I lost interest and moved on. Watching my brother fly planes bigger than that was pretty cool for me. He was really good at it. When he moved out,he took his planes and eventually got into RC. I finally got back into it years later. Nate you did ok for a first timer. too much wrist action there but another prop and it was fine. I am sure he brought one of his cheaper models, just for you. Line control is still a thing, just not as popular, for obvious reasons. You can however fly in windy conditions with them.

Back in the early 80's, I got started building planes for RC - the first of which was a J3 Cub that took me a month to build - 5 seconds to destroy! So my second build was control-line, .049-powered, and still took a month to build. Also, it still took 5 seconds to destroy! 5-year-old logic stated then that we might as well be crashing RC, which I've been doing ever since. :-)
Thanks for the trip down memory lane! Where are all my racing quads, I wanna try my old control-line....

Control line flying was my introduction to model planes thanks to an after school club run by one of the teachers who was an absolute control line freak lol! I absolutely loved it and went all through school and would have continued if it wasn't restricted to pupils only.
Hopefully you'll have already caught the bug and will build one (or more) of your own. If you built two you could do have a laugh doing some dogfighting with the boss too ;)

Impressive flying . I could tell that the real pilot had flown combat before. That's where two pilots fly in a 5 foot circle together and cut at each other's streamers . This often results in line tangles and mid air collisions . Very aggressive and FUN.
What I didn't see was any outside loops or outside figure 8s . That would have more impressed me . That the pilot could fly upside down (inverted) or had the skills to do do outside manovers.
I'd eat his lunch in a combat match . He would have to show me some more skills .
I'm glad to see that c l flying is not forgotten . It should be the entry level platform to learn aeronautics. You saw how the r c pilot had such trouble. It's not as easy as you think . Just saying I enjoyed the demonstration.

Hey Nate and Abby, this video is awesome! Made me smile and laugh all over again. Nate I know the fight was short but you did a great job with it considering I put you out their with minimal instruction. The plane will fly again as soon as I get a little time for the minor repairs and the wisconsin weather decides to behave itself. Thanks again for a fantastic weekend hopefully we'll be able to do it again sometime. Can't wait to see the rest of the footage from the weekend.

Aside from the girlie scream at the start....Back in the 60's when we were teaching newbies to fly U control, we usually figured they would destroy the first 2 or 3 Ukie planes learning to fly, so we usually started them out on trainers that were almost like boards and were almost indestructible, they have to master the basics of flight and learn to deal with the dizziness.

Nice video. I used to fly control lines too, and to stop from getting dizzy going round and round we would just stand there doing figure eights in one spot and then go the opposite direction ha ha. We also would do combat with tail streamers, 2 guys back to back in the centre of the circle, trying to cut the other guys streamer with out getting tangled up. Was great fun. Happy flying.

I thought that was Abby doing bird calls. Reminded me of my maiden flight of my Christmas present Kenhi Bobcat Ukie back in the early 50's. Nobody explained that you are supposed to hold your wrist stiff and raise and lower your hand in response wind effects to keep flying more or less level.

  • @MrTUBER408

Nate : The first airplane I ever flew was a control line P51 Mustang. I crashed just like you did, only with a lot worse outcome. I didn't back up and turn fast enough. A thirty second flight that took 2 weeks to fix. That was 58 years ago! Radio control was in it's infancy. Really crude and very expensive. Two channel crystal controlled frequencies.

    • @bobsmith1814
      @bobsmith1814 7 років тому +1

Oh boy talk about retro. I learned how to fly on Cox PT 19. It was a trainer. So if you crashed it you could put it back together and fly it again.

model nutty : My dad went to the hobby shop in Boston. They had replacement props, canopy and a big tube of Testors airplane glue. While he was there, he picked up a Cox Marine Corsair. I crashed it three or four times. It turned out good thing he got the large size tube of glue and a several spare props. I almost forgot about the crushed match head, empty CO2 bombs. My dad had a CO2, .177 pellet pistol we would shoot in the basement. I would surreptitiously collect the empty cartridges from the trash. My dad let me buy M80 looking smoke bombs for the 4th of JULY. I would take the green fuses out of them and reuse them. Those CO2 bombs were super loud and dangerous. They would fly apart in big pieces. ;-)
