Japadabadoo, Yeah such "rubber-ducks" are like go-carts on water very lively in breezy conditions but my happy-cat also started bending up the leehull above a certain speedlimit plus slipping sideways... big fun
Yes, she gets pretty close to the wind but with the small kegs makes quite a lot of leeway in the strong winds. The windward progress is surprisingly good though;.
Have you had a chance to sail Happy Cat Hurricane? If yes, can you reflect on sailing experience and the differences between mini cat and happy cat if it comes to this matter?
@PeteLeuenberger The problem is that there are not many comparisons available. Only one video on yt where hurricane seems to be more rigid, faster, less splashy and behaving more like regular catamaran. And there is one local race review where minicat is faster (especially in strong wind) and behaves better than hurricane. Tough to judge...
the 420 seems like it takes a while to assemble. so i got the guppy. but it was hard to steer in higher wind and the mast would fold back in high wind. Manual says these boats are only for beufort 4 max. i was afraid it would break in stronger winds
I noticed that too. I was imagining if you made a long plastic beams on top of each hull attached to the tramp that it would make the boat more rigid??? I wonder if the 310 would be more rigid for being smaller.
@@JoyriderTV Just saw the video again, great one. Don't know if someone already mentioned: You have to keep in mind that pressure in the hull might drop because of the water cooling down the air inside the hull. When I pump up my cat and I'm on a warm, sunny beach I would put in about 10-20% more pressure than recommended, depending on the water temperature ...
Exciting video as always Joe! I would like to ask if the octopus flexible tripod mount is suitable for mounting a gopro on the bridle wires/spinnaker pole or other positions on the boat ? Ill be visiting in a few weeks and id really like to record some footage
@@JoyriderTV Have you tried the smartkat by any chance? A comparison video would be great. Also, do you think there is a way to secure the front of the hulls so they don't flop about so much?
It looks like flying not sailing! I have the smallest one, guppy (no jib), but I have problems tacking. Could you give some advice on how to do that successfully?
I have a 420 like in this video, but when I first got it, I couldn't get the boat to tack at all. (The wind on my lake isn't anywhere near a strong as in this video.) My previous experience was with lasers w/o a jib so I tried sailing the minicat exactly the same way. A neighbor of mine saw me struggling with tacking the minicat and she explained that I needed to use the jib to tack by pulling the jib in as tight as possible just before attempting the tack, make the turn, then the jib pulls the bow across, and then once around, pop the jib and real it in on the other side for the new tack. That took me from almost impossible to tack, to tacking easily. Again, I'm on a lake where the winds don't reach more than 10mph. With high winds, this jib approach might not be necessary at all since the boat would have a lot of forward momentum going into the tack... Just my experience.
As with all light catamarans. The speed would have decreased significantly, and the load on the entire rigging would have increased significantly. The second person on board - 1.5 times weight gain
Nobody at minicat might have seen this coming! I'm not sure if they should be scared or proud! 🔥🧨🎇
Proud for sure!! She does what you';d think but then a lot more.
Super proud!!
FURIOUS BANANA BOAT!
looks like fun, makes me wonder what a hybrid rigid/inflatable could look like
Yes there's so much more potential there/.,,,
Last time I heard those sort of breathing patterns a baby was being born !! Congratulations on the birth of 4m20 of sailing fun.
Thanks, It certainly was a lot of fun!!

so much fun!!
Love my HappyCat Hurricane. So fast.
whoa, that's fun!
You're not wrong!!
This looks like a lot of fun!
Also: ILCA6 in the corss-shore at 7:02 - oh yeah!
Yep the 'Laser' is still too much fun.
Hiking Joe your feel that tomorrow!!!
Ha! Yes, for sure,
How does it do sailing into the wind ? Can you get near 45 deg ?
Would be awesome if you could also try other inflatable / foldable cats !
Yes, she gets pretty close to the wind but with the small kegs makes quite a lot of leeway in the strong winds.

No, the MiniCat is the only inflatable that I've tried.
The mini cat looks to be more rigid structurally, higher performance. Am heistating between the two boats.

@@PeteLeuenberger Although I've only sailed the MiniCat, I really can't fault the design and build quality.
Good luck in deciding.

I thought I'd test the 420 to the limit - she seemed to take it well.
I'm going to see how long it takes to assemble now that I have a pump.
It looks like a lot of fun! Is trapezing with so much wobble opossible? I see Minicat sells trapeze kits.
I have a trapeze kit to try - I'll get onto that soon.
@@JoyriderTV awesome! Looking forward to it
Yes! And huge fun. We run trapeze on our Hurricane and Tiwal inflatables.
Great video. Minicat 420 is great but at those speeds it lacks rigidity ...tons of fun though.
I noticed that too. I was imagining if you made a long plastic beams on top of each hull attached to the tramp that it would make the boat more rigid???
I wonder if the 310 would be more rigid for being smaller.
I thought, once again that i could have pumped her a bit firmer.
I would guess that the smaller boat would be stiffer.

@@klaus-peterriemer4478 thanks - great tip.
Would it be more stable with modified/larger/deeper keels? Laughing along with you hitting 15+ knots!
Yeah i think some bigger keels would give more grip, but it's the compromise with the convenience on show here.

I'll talk about that and some options in tomorrow's Q+A
Almost 18 knots on an inflatable, that's pretty nice.
Certainly felt good!

😂 That lil thing is barely hanging on!
She's too light almost.
Would love to see you review the 460!
When I get one......
I looked into getting one of these, but they are like 10k CAD, which is too bad because it looks like it could be soo much fun to learn on!
It's as fun as it looks.
how is to against the wind?thanks
Not so good. I'll do some kind of test in an upcoming video.

Needs a spinnaker... Would help keep the nose up as well.
To be honest - on this outing that thought never entered my mind!!
You should try it on an optimist!
Maybe I will!!
Awesome! how would it look with two people in these kind of conditions? Cheers!

I absolutely did NOT expect that kind of performance from an inflatable... :O
I was quite surprised myself.
