In the beginning: Wearily trudging up the stairs, trying keep up with the rest of society.
At the end: Happily descending the stairs into madness.

Notice how for first half of the trailer (him being Arthur) ,he seems very unhappy , he can't have genuine smile (he forcefully tries to make a smile with his fingers) but at the end he finally smiles , which means he has completely "transformed" in the the joker .
I can't watch this trailer without having a tear in my eyes. That is so beautiful from Joaquin. BEAUTIFUL!!!!

I cannot believe I’m about to say this but out of all DC movies coming out this year... JOKER is the one I am most looking forward to watch!! This trailer got me hooked as soon as I heard his laugh

When I watched this trailer this morning that first laugh sold this movie for me. This is so dark and I think it needs to be and I’m very interested to see this film!!

Think more people need to give Todd Phillips credit here. Sure Joaquin Phoenix is killing it but who woulda thought that from looking at his pass films that Todd Phillips can do this. Every shot is gorgeous in the imagery...this is like art.
Oh for sure 100% it’s a combined effort to bring the vision to life. It looks beautiful and wonderfully presented. I was just completely gobsmacked by the trailer I completely forgot to talk about Phillips. It definitely is like art

You're gonna be disturbed and shook. Very dark and foreboding. But you'll love it!

Had this crazy thought after watching the new Joker trailer. Because it's a standalone movie, wouldn't it be a dark twist in the narrative if the Joker actually murdered young Bruce Wayne instead of his parents? Then Gotham would never have a Batman to protect it. What's worse than actually killing Thomas & Martha Wayne, how about destroying their lives by killing their son.
That’s flashpoint Batman’s origin, Bruce gets killed instead but then Martha turns into the Joker. It’s an awesome moment. I could go with that idea for this movie.

Great response guys! Unfortunately, the more that I see this trailer the sadder I get. It was exciting the first time, but after seeing the train scene multiple times as he's laughing to himself going through a personal moment of actual mental breakdown and seeing a look of helpless madness in his face after they took his mask off, it was too much. This guy needs help and all they could do was taunt and beat him down. Yeah, this one's not going to be for kids or anyone who actually has someone in their life dealing debilliating mental issues.
It definitely will be a tough movie for people who may be going through similar experiences or had similar events happen in life. On the other hand it’s going to be a great psychological exploration of the joker and just what drives him. But definitely agree it could be a tough watch of suffering mental health issues or have had similar experiences
No clowns for me, but Joker seems diff. I like that part, near the end, where his shoes strike the ground, and make sparks...👍!

Interesting character, Oscar level acting, high quality cinematography and directing based on the trailer, a very solid supporting cast. If the story and script are anywhere near the level of that stuff, it will be a legendary film. I'm a little too hyped rn.

Joker is the hero in this story and I love that aspect. The trailer never shows him doing bad things. Just bad things happening to him.
Lol he's not a hero. He's definitely not going to be pure evil like in most media, but he's not going to be completely innocent either. By the end of the movie I think he's going to have done a lot of horrible shit.
While probably not a hero he is a victim of circumstance and a sympathetic character from a certain point of view. I can see how he could be “the hero” as Gotham City is responsible for the bad things happening kinda thing.

It's because it's a teaser trailer. The line that Thomas Wayne says "What kind of coward would do something that cold blooded, someone hiding behind a mask." The Joker probably did something so bad that it attracted some media attention.
He probably completely snaps around the middle of act 2. We see a slow descent into madness. I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a major tonal shift at this point
Getting some mad King of Comedy vibes (With DeNiro, maybe a little homage there?) and Taxi Driver (also DeNiro lol).
So glad that this looks to be treated as a character film before super hero movie, and it honestly doesn't need that flair. Phoenix is looking really good.

A lot of larger government-run asylums it major cities simply became known as "state hospitals" Philadelphia state hospital at Byberry, Kentucky State Hospital, Pennhurst State school and Hospital and perhaps the most infamous of all the one that Arkham is based on, Danvers State Hospital.
Often once state governments took over these asylums they retained their old name. Usually it was the name of a founding doctor a nearby body of water or the neighborhood that the hospital was located in.
Don't know if you guys read since this reaction that Joaquim Phoenix in-depth studied a real-life disorder where people laugh uncontrollably, so that's part of why his laugh is so great, and sometimes even looks painful. Because it is.
Expectations are now high for this film.
For anyone wondering: The JOKER'S make up is based on that of John Wayne Gacy who in the 1970s dressed up as a clown and killed 33 people

The Fortress Actually, rumor is they’re looking for a younger actor for Batman. It would fit if that little boy really is Bruce.
iReiGN xx the boy would fit perfectly, it would be jokers age that would be the problem if they wanted to build a franchise around him. Mid 40s now, it’s a tough gig to keep using him as he ages (unless they go a 3 jokers route)

This is the most hauntingly beautiful trailer I've ever seen. I'm feeling a bit of Twisty the Clown from "American Horror Story: Freak Show" here. Same as that, he's terrifying but I have a feeling I'm going to weep for him.
100%. It will be a very sympathetic evil with the descent into madness. The circumstances will probably be highly relatable to many people having a bad day or being tormented by bullies. Definitely killing joke vibes from it.
