I lived in SA for 37 years. What a wonderful place. I emigrated in 1998. I have been back many times to visit the few remaking family I still have there. It’s an absolute culture shock every time I go back. The place is a real mess. I’m not going back again. I pray for those still living there.

Many people see the RSA as only "an apartheid country" back in the day (fact) but I also see a well run country, a beautiful land, a prosperous country as a whole. Yes, I miss those days where we didn't have to fight with municipalities for the general upkeep of our towns, where the council used the funds appropriately. I don't ever remember a municipality being bankrupt or owing Eskom millions of rands. Thank you for a trip down memory lane.

@@andrewdutoit9571 Everyone in the West thinks they're a South African historian. They know the one or two facts they're taught at school or via the media and think they've got it all figured out. I admit that I barely know a fraction of it but I know that my grandmother worked for the chamber of mines and she was constantly trying to track down workers brought in from countries to the north on 6 month working visas. They would disappear into the community around month number 5. We are talking around World War 2 at this stage. I don't have all the data but in 1800 there were approximately 1.44 million people. By 1940 there were 10 million people. Now there are 60 million people. The growth is phenomenally exponential over this period. The concept of the majority of these people being illegal immigrants probably never dawns on people and it will never be publicised. I don't care what you say but that number of unemployed, uneducated and technically homeless people would break most countries. I fear that this knowledge will die out and all that will be left is the portrayal of history that suits people like Ron so that they can package things up into a very simple good vs evil story. My grandmother also told me that numerous schools that were built to educate native people were burned down pre-apartheid. I'm sorry, but civilised people don't go around burning their schools down so they can remain uneducated and ignorant. I can't speak for apartheid but I know people were trying to build a successful integrated society there at one point but they got swamped by population expansion and a ridiculous amount of poor attitude and behaviour. No-one also talks about the moronic ritual behaviour that goes on there. Like the black men used to tell the women that they would have to prove their fertility before they could marry. That was just a common excuse to father ridiculous numbers of kids who grew up fatherless, and later also spread aids. My grandmother was also sending money from overseas to buy school books for the son of her brother's housemaid, who was talented and wanted to go to university. There was a tribal war one day and his people asked him if he was going to come and fight the other tribe at the age of 12. He said no, so they decapitated him in the street. I have heard heaps of great stories like this that make me feel a whole different way about things to the indoctrination I've been exposed to. Honestly, I only know as little as what I have been told, but I still know a hell of a lot more about Africa than anyone I've met where I live, who all strangely have strong opinions on the matter and the continent. When will they admit that giving control back to the "native" people in places like Zimbabwe etc. has been a colossal failure. You need skilled and educated people to create and maintain industries, as well as farm enough food to feed such a ridiculous number of people. It should also be acknowledged that the GDP per capita right now is roughly what is was 40 years ago. Progress???

We/ they are and were good people who knew the African better than the Africans knew themselves but especially better than the 1st and 2nd generation Europeans that settled here after World War 2 which contributed to the problems here! We built this Country into a Super Power despite sanctions. From what I see, we'll have to do it again if this Country progresses any further down this road of 'Africanisation' as it's pushing my Culture and the Country back into the Stoneage.

My family got out in the 1970s. My family had a pretty good life there until then. I was born in Australia and I am surrounded by people who say stupid stuff about how pieces of trash like Mandela, the ANC and Zuma etc. have been great for the country. There is virtually no understanding of the history of the place and people couldn't give a stuff about Mandela FC, what goes on in Rhodesia, putting people's babies in microwaves, or that innocent farmers have been tortured to death with regularity. They don't even want to accept that the regime is corrupt and racist. My father's friends were being forced to hand over half of their businesses to equal black partners, who are not required to contribute any capital and refuse to work, so they've closed their businesses for good now. It is just slowly destroying the place piece by piece as it goes backward. People in the West have been brainwashed by this false narrative spun out by the media and politicians, but also history in every shape and form seems a mystery to most of the Gen Z kids these days anyway, and they've got no context regarding the past and the events that have led up to our current existence. I've noticed very few of them seem to understand the Cold War, so how are they going to understand complex geopolitics and the situation in Ukraine, Taiwan etc. I still have some family over there but I am reluctant to go. Sadly I feel safer in the prospect of traveling to places like Namibia instead but I don't think I would enjoy myself as much as I should because of the repugnant stuff that goes on across the continent that is a bit too hard to ignore. I don't know how people are holding in there. The people my father knew who were currently doing OK were strangely supporters of apartheid but now they're somehow singing a different tune and they're on the ANC express. While my family opposed apartheid and I don't sympathise with these people at all on that front, I have even less respect for them, as it shows that they don't really stand for anything and that they're willing to change their whole outlook to progress in society and feather their own nest. I just can't fathom changing fundamental opinions based upon the flow of the breeze, but I guess that's what people start to do when living under an oppressive regime like in Russia or China, where its best to stick to the party line if you don't want to be persecuted. In Australia we also have politics creeping into business. I work for a business in which the CEO expresses her political opinion in internal documents, communications and meetings. So far I have escaped it, but she is forcing other employees to read out political and racially divisive statements at the beginning of group meetings and I am seriously contemplating my options.

South Africa wasn't like it is today. It was a very young Country with a small economy run by the White Africans for the previous 350+ years. As there are two cultures in South Africa, one Western and the other is Patriarcle, pasteral and Tr!bal as it is today. When the Majority started moving to the towns and cities in the early 1960's, all were uneducated labourers with no employment and nowhere to stay. That was when the trouble started as from a tricle of people it became a flood and the cities and towns inftastructure couldn't accomodate the pressure. Then in the 1970's it was 'Revolution before Education' and all this exacerbating the problem and caused friction between the races. Even now, after 30 years of Majority Rule the people in power still aren't managers as all that was inherited through Democracy is bankrupted due to cadre deployment bar none. So this problem is more complex than just blaming Apartheid and the White African for the Country's woes, the problem goes far deeper than that.

The people who were left in the villages had no choice but to come in the cities and hustle since everything was money in Africa. I may be a born free but I know what was happening those days. If white people handled the situation in a better way we wouldn't be here today blaming each other. If you people built cities and developed rural areas as well instead of apartheid south Africa would be the best country in the world. Black people didn't care of being rich or being presidents before apartheid forced them to be obsessed with it. White can still win this country I believe that but I wish them to behave in a decent way this time. @@sakhizwesakhi2243 Apartheid was demonized by the Liberals and Socialists of this World. Their agenda was to do exactly what has happened. Listen to Verwoerds speech where it was supposed to be Good Neighbourliness. We White Africans knew that we could never hold the Country without destroying most of the Majority which is against our Morals and upbringing. If you look at the 'Struggle', what really happened? How many Whites were casualty's compared to Blacks? Blacks were killing their own. We may have favoured Inkatha but if we didn't care about Blacks, why did we send the Police into the Townships in the late 70's and 80's when the people were rioting? Why not leave them alone to finish the job for us as it'll save White lives from getting inbetween the combatants? Apartheids idea was to give everyone a 'Home' based on the UK model. Kwazulu for the Zulu, Transkei for the Xhosa and wherever the Whites were in the Majority as our spot. But it didn't work like that due to other County's interfering in our internal problems. Their meddling caused all the troubles you see today. Many Whites have no problems with anyone as long as I can do my thing, I don't want to interfere with anyone and I want the same. Under Apartheid it could have happened, but the Worlds Liberals and Communists had other agenda's to cause a rift between our peoples and you know what they are. @Lulu I think you should review your opinion, what ancestral lands were you evicted from? As far as I know the Homelands were where that particular tribe originated from. As far as evictions go, the cities and towns were designed in an orderly fashion, so if people squatted on land or in houses they didn't have title deeds to you would be forcibly removed, that's why it's called law and order. Visit any progressive Country and those rules are the same. Townships were created to serve the business communties as mostly imported black labour didn't have finances to purchase land in the main hubs. Where in the World will you find uneducated labourers buying property in rich and affluent areas? One thing you forget, the economy of South Africa was only supported by the White taxes in those days, so to modernise the infrastructure in the cities took priority as you can see today, the education system is ruined, schools are turning out inferior educated students and yet Apartheid still gets blamed for it. You will be delighted to hear since Democracy the problems you had with no electricity, running water, sewage and no paved roads are a thing of the past, now all suffer the same affliction, we are all living without it... please tell me how do you steal resources that were not there to start with? As far as hangings, jail etc goes, if you break the law you pay the price isn't it, thats what happens in any civilised Country.
