A lot of you have asked about the "Flirt Pole" I used in this video (the big cat-teaser looking toy that's made for dogs) at 3:37. It IS pretty awesome at wearing Arlo out, without wearing me out. Haha. Here's the link to the one Arlo and I use (we have the 36-inch version): Squishy Face Flirt Pole (Amazon Affiliate Link): amzn.to/3HCtux8
I have to wait sooo long to get a Doberman! But I'm so close to getting the puppy. I want to have a strong bond with it and trains it to be the best. I just love them so much and Arlo! I will probably be getting a agility course for it too.
We had a dog agility course where I lived. I took my Dobie there. Also we used to throw sticks into the bay and our Dobie plunged in. We started in a creek. Also always took them to off leash dog parks. My last Dobie loved chasing bubbles with my daughter. And hide and seek was the most fun. I miss my Dobie! Best dogs for sure. I had collies, poodles, shelties, and boxers, but no dogs were like my Dobies! I trained dogs
That's great to hear, Linda! Dobies definitely are one of a kind and it's neat to hear you say that you've experienced that first-hand, especially with all of your experience with different breeds and with dog training as well. Sounds like your Doberman had a lot of fun with you!
Wow I'm saying this as a 16 year old looking after a doberman. Your videos really really help sir!!💙 I've learnt so many things just by watching your videos. They make my day💯and not about the video but omg i LOVE Arlo, he's the cutest!!😭♥️
Happy new year, and thanks for the amazing video! That flirt pole looks like a blast to play with :D Regarding puzzle toys - are you familiar with those tap-to-speech buttons? Those cognitive tasks might be a good way to burn mental energy as well!
@@DobermanPlanet I’ve seen great work with a dog named Bunny here on UA-cam, and I think Dr Coren has examples of border collies who have used it. Given the Doberman’s owner-focused nature, I bet they’d take to it quickly! And as you say: something to do to tire them out on a day when the weather is a sweltering -35C in the sun.
I would say dog show is physical - low (usually you are running only few rounds) and mentally - medium (dog has to concentrate 100% on you and what you are doing. Also there is some loud noises, many other dogs and people etc. Our dogs may sleep for whole day after show wknd😅🙈).
Lol my dog won’t play tug of war. I’m guessing it’s the lack of socialization in her early years. As soon as I touch the rope or stick, she just drops it and submits.
Aww, well that's totally understandable! This might be a video you'd enjoy watching, especially if she struggles with confidence in other areas as well: ua-cam.com/video/K6nCTlJLBtE/v-deo.html. In another way, it's great that she is so submissive, gentle, and understanding though!
Happy New Year John! Great topic. Nyx loves most of the activities you mentioned. She absolutely loves playing fetch, frisbee and I'm training her in baton recovery. It's fun because they are so fast. There are so many activities, and not enough time in a day lol I'm looking at building a mini agility course for her in the back yard...she loves to parkour! Thanks for the bubble's idea! She'll go insane with those. Cheers
We got snow and it is my Doberman 1st time seeing snow. He loves to bury his nose in the snow, catch snow balls, and when the snow is falling from the sky he loves to jump and eat snowflakes. It is cute seeing him happy in the snow.
You could always get a fast, all terrain radio control vehicle (I recommend one in the 1/10 size). Be sure to introduce your dog to the rc properly by having a good distance between the two before you make the truck zip across the field. Don't have it charge towards your dog, rather have it catch the dogs attention by driving it from left to right or drive away from. You'll need to "armor" the rc to keep it from getting chewed into oblivion and you don't want the dog to puncture the battery pack, so some kind of armor. Also, once the dog gets close to the rc, have it come to a complete stop, you don't want to cause injury to your dog so after your dog gets close to catching the rc, complete stop. Walk over to the two and bring your dog back to the bench/seat/tailgate/whatever. You could also attach a chew toy to the back of the rc with a length of rope or strong string.
We can’t even say the word “bubbles” in our house without creating chaos. We have a Doberman and a Lab and it’s their absolute most favorite game; we play at least once a day. We’ve gone through two bubble machines and three bubbles guns (they’re a little rough on them) and I even found the perfect song to put on while we play (Bubbles by the Puppy Dog Pals cast).
LOL! Our Moses is a maniac for bubbles. We have to spell it out when referring to them because he will go crazy thinking that we are going outside that very second to play bubbles. He know the packaging, he knows when we take him to our sportsman’s club that bubbles are near, he knows when My husband gets his special hat on that he will be playing bubbles. His back legs literally start shaking with anticipation.
@@suzannethepatriot8049 Yes! They really go nuts for it. We have to call it “the b word” unless we are actually going to play right then. We had a bubble machine with a remote control (until they managed to knock the machine off the hook and break it), and just the sound of us picking up the remote was enough to send them into a frenzy. They would run to the sliding door to see if bubbles were going and, if they were, they’d race each other outside. I’m pleasantly surprised to find out that bubbles still float around even in the dead of winter.
I’m getting a Doberman puppy in a month and a half, and I have been watching allll of your videos, even on how to pick the right breeder, and I am just so so excited!! And I think the peanut butter bubbles will be so much fun! Thanks for all the great info and thanks for letting me just absolutely fall in love with this breed
Our Dobe gets so much exercise from bubbles alone. He jumps super high for the bubbles and on a windy day, he runs and runs and runs after those fun bubbles.
Happy New Year brother! My Dobie boy is 5 months old now, and the sweetest dog when we are in the dog park. Many keep asking me “how did you get such a sweet dog?” And I tell them of you and that I follow your instructions to the letter. They are amazed when they find out that I did not attend a dog school and that I learned it from you on UA-cam.
Hey there! Happy new year! You know what would be really cool? If you reacted to a video of jungkook of BTS e Bam (his first dog - I guess - a doberman). It would be interesting if you - as what it looks like, an expert - reacted to their bond, the way jungkook is training him etc... here's the video I'd like you to react to: ua-cam.com/video/Pdko7s4S9e0/v-deo.html Also, Bam is past the 1 year old mark and he still had a little accident regarding his potty training...?! You will see it in the video... is this normal? What do you think he Is doing wrong, advices, etc! I bet it would give you a lot of views + that breed is becoming really extra popular around the world because of him as well! I would be super interested in what you have to say! Thanks a lot!!
Can you make a video or do you have a video on how to make a puppy play more gentle she leaves scratches on my older dog and makes him bleed sometimes but she just wants so play
Hi, Cris! Make sure you're trimming your puppy's nails about every week. Here is a video to help with that: ua-cam.com/video/yA8_t8A7ko4/v-deo.html. This will definitely help with the scratching. So sad to hear it makes your other dog bleed! As for the puppy biting, here is a great resource that will help with that: ua-cam.com/video/nk3rXqEpBYI/v-deo.html. Hope this helps!
Can’t wait until my boy is a bit older to take him hiking! Also do you have any opinion on what is the best way to post ears? There are many out there that work. I’m not quite sure which one I should use.
The method used on Arlo is commonly referred to as the "zip-tie method" of ear posting since it relies on heavy plastic zip ties in the ear canal acting as the posts (along with some medical surgical glue called Torbot) to keep the ears stretched and sticking up. Although we don't have a video on this method (yet), you can Google "zip tie method of ear posting" or something similar and you'll probably see everything you need to know! Hopefully this helps!
John, Your videos are great and very helpful not to mention extremely entertaining. My family is looking at a Doberman puppy, and we are trying to find the most durable plush toy…any suggestions?!
Hi, Ava! Great question and thanks for the positive feed-back! These are the all-time best dog toys we recommend: ua-cam.com/video/geOdde41iDI/v-deo.html. You'll probably be able to find something on there! But for plush toys specifically/only, there are some great options towards the bottom of this article in the Chewy link: www.dobermanplanet.com/recommended-products/toys/. Hope this helps!
Some really great ideas in this video! Unfortunately, my 5 month old, Brody has been attacked at the dog park 3 times now so we will be skipping that activity going forward. Can't wait to do agility with him but our local training center requires that they be at least 1 year old to protect their growing puppy joints from all the jumping type activities. In the mean time we are doing 2 other canine sports; Nosework and Rally-O. Brody specifically LOVES the nosework classes. He also goes to doggy day care once per week and while that isn't something we do together necessarily, it is something he just goes nuts for.
Where can I get in contact with a very good Doberman breeder I’ve had two Dobermans one was the bomb. We had him train from my husband, who was handicapped or became handicapped. He wasn’t handicapped from the gecko when he was a child case. I miss my Marco and we had another department name Brando and I need a service dog eventually for my back on my hip. I played tennis for 30+ years on hard courts and also I need an emotional dog which I know they don’t allow those I guess anymore I did get a cat for emotional civility, my son passed away. My husband passed away. I sold my house I had pneumonia. I had a mini stroke and that’s just the tip of the iceberg I have been anyway.tu
My Doberman love the ocean from when he was a puppy of 1012 weeks old. I just sat him down where the waves not the center of the ocean at the Sandy and Dobermans aren’t usually water dogs at Marco love the water. He loved it and I miss those days.
Another activity: Play with your dog as well as you can like another dog would. Just be careful about hurting yourself. Humans are built like humans. Humans are not built like other dogs. I'm not sure about with Dobermans, but some dogs really like to play with their people. The human will get tired but not the dog.
Hey man, i just wanna ask how tall do American doberman and european doberman get, ? I'm planning to get an American doberman , it's the only one available in our country, European are hard to find, i really just wanna know how big do American dobis get
Hi there! Do you have any advice for wanting my first Doberman after 22 years of owning Rottweilers? Or do you have a video of Doberman vs Rottweiler I can go watch? Thanks in advance
Although this video has some great ideas, please note that you should NOT take a dog to a dog show unless it is entered in the show. It is actually against the rules for any AKC or UKC sanctioned event. There are certain health and equipment restrictions as well. And finally, there are expectations about behaviors.
We don’t have an agility course near by but everything else, we have fun doing with our Moses. Our youngest loves playing hide and seek with our tough guy. But, by far, if Moses thinks for one second that the bubbles are coming out, his legs start trembling with anticipation. He is a maniac for those things. I love to take him out on windy days. We are fortunate that the neighbor behind us let’s us run our dog on her 5 acres. He runs and runs and runs. I love to try to tire him out…it’s not easy to do with a Dobie.
Haha! So glad Moses enjoys playing with the bubbles so much! And that you have a wonderful backyard neighbor who doesn't mind sharing her yard! So cool!
I have a Doberman and I live in India there are a lot of festivals here where they use firecrackers .and they blow them up very close to my house .my Dobie is extremely terrified of them. so much so that he pushes past me when I open the door and runs far away. and he only does this for fireworks nothing else. anything I can do?. I try to sit with him and comfort him. it helps. but he prefers running far away happy new year btw
The puzzle toys like the one you showed my doberman worked out that she could hild it in her mouth an throw it up in the air on a hard foor and smash it, all the sand from it on the floor!!!
If you take your dog to a lake, take him or her to a lake with little or preferably no boat traffic. If the option isn't available then take him or her to a cordoned off area of the lake designated for swimming.
That's a great point, Harold! Boats definitely aren't safe for them to be around and will probably cause more harm/anxiety/fear than good. Especially if your Dobie isn't used to being around all the noise and commotion they can cause in the water.
That's great to hear, Evan! You'll probably really enjoy looking up events near you on the InfoDog.com website, then! Hope you're able to share some new experiences together now because of this video! :)
I have this same exact flirt pole! It was the best thing I ever bought for my doberman. She gets super excited for it and doesn't take much time to tire her out. Definitely worth the investment and you can buy replacement parts for the ends of it. :)
That's a great question! Here is an in-depth article about Dobermans swimming: www.dobermanplanet.com/getting-your-doberman-to-love-swimming/. But to answer your question, no, the chlorine isn't harmful as long as it's being used at safe levels!
We put the deposit on a European puppy today! Just wanna say thankyou so much for preparing me for this. I've been watching all of your videos, I think I watched your puppy corner videos like five times each, ugh, I nervous.. Can't be too prepared!
The hide and seek ability of a Dobie can be taken incredible. At our trainer’s, they take my wife out into a large field on an ATV at night to get some distance and she’d hide in tall grass. I’d then give our Dobie a command and she’d run into the field and find find my wife. She got very quick with it and it was good fun.
My Dobie, Coby, is clearly not getting enough exercise, he definitely shows a lot of the signs you mentioned. Everyone in my household has chronic pain /exhaustion, along with me working for service so I'm dead on my feet most days after work. I'm going to try a few of these to see how he does! Thank you
Thank you! I have been trying to find ways to do fun stuff with my pup in the future. However, I'm still struggling a bit on making a training plan for when I get my pup this spring. Any other puppy stage ideas for when I get my pup, and maybe more information on what to do when I get home with the pup. Again thanks your information is always valued!
Took him to the dog park few days ago poor baby got jumped on by 3 dogs had to take him to the vet luckily the wounds weren't too bad. So now he just gotta do a lot of resting and as my fellow Dobermann owners may expect he is not a fan of relaxing and resting 😌
You’ve gotten me so excited and feeling very confident! I’ve watched most of your videos to ensure that when I pick my Doberman and bring her home I’ll be ready!
Just a suggestion (something I do with my dogs) is a mix of fetch and hide and seek. It’s easier to do outside if they’re trained off-leash. Just throw a stick and then hide behind a bush or tree for them to find you
Happy New Year John! Quick question, how would you best handle separation anxiety? My 11month old Female has been awesome, I have followed everything that you have taught on these videos and your website and she has turned into the sweetest, most loving, and most obedient dog. She has never chewed on anything that wasn't hers up until TODAY! I am out of town for a work event and each time I do this she is home alone with my lady, and she acts up. Today she chewed up the carpet which is mind-boggling to me because she hasn't ever chewed on something other than her toys. She isn't crated anymore because we haven't ever had an issue, and she doesn't do it when she is left home alone at my house, but in my ladies house she acts up. How can I fix this when I am gone? I feel terrible. She is such a sweet dog but this one incident has made me feel like I am doing something wrong now! (I'm not downplaying it either, this is literally the first time she has chewed something not hers! But this was bad!) Thanks so much for everything. Your advice and training has turned this dog into the "second" love of my life after my lady lol. Great video by the way!! Declan
My Dobie pup could have died but for 3 gastric surgeries in her first 2 years of life. Between 8,200 and the 12,,000 I ve spent on each surgery plus additional time to keep her mellow after surgery has added a few thousand dollars to that. I've no answers how to stop her from swallowing and chewing on everything . I love her so much but it's awful. She had her last surgery December 10th to save her life. A worry all the time. No help either to stop her.
"they tend to love swimming, but they're not the best swimmers" yes. my dog is 1.5 yr old and he looooooves swimming and diving into the water at the natural beach near where we live. however, i once recently tossed his ball into the water around where we normally had no problem, but neither of us realized how deep it was...he dove right in and i had to go in after him when his head went under and didn't immediately come back up! by the time i got to him, he had already come back to the shallow area, but he gave me a good scare lol
our dobie literally while swimming will dive down to get her toy as it is falling to the bottom of our pool. She has not actually reached the bottom (about 6 feet) but has dove down to around 4 feet. she will even do this while wearing her doggie life jacket. She absolutely loves the pool and would stay in it all day (if that was possible).her favorite pool activity is running around the pool then jumping in to get her toy (somewhat like "dock diving")
My Dobie loves chasing the laser light up and down the hall. She drops after she's gone. With having some daily temperatures in the negatives, it gets out her energy!

My Doberman love the ocean from when he was a puppy of 1012 weeks old. I just sat him down where the waves not the center of the ocean at the Sandy and Dobermans aren’t usually water dogs at Marco love the water. He loved it and I miss those days.
Happy new year to John, Arlo and your family and friends. I'll try to maintain these activities. And I'm glad that my dogs are already in agility.
Sampa, Happy New Year to you and your family as well! That's great your dogs are in agility - that's sure to keep them active and happy!
Another activity: Play with your dog as well as you can like another dog would. Just be careful about hurting yourself. Humans are built like humans. Humans are not built like other dogs. I'm not sure about with Dobermans, but some dogs really like to play with their people. The human will get tired but not the dog.
The owner of this channel is secretly a Doberman.
Hi sir how old can we start training and exercising a doberman puppy? Can we put them on exercise as early as 2months old? Thank you
These beautiful dogs will do anything, as long as you don’t get them wet and cold. Nb. Buy a coat for winter and wet weather.
Great video!! Thank you :)
I try to sit with him and comfort him. it helps. but he prefers running far away
happy new year btw
Can you make a video on Doberman and kangle mix with its picture
Hi brother,I'm trying to get a doberman, should I get male or a female?
Youngboy Never Bored Again
O, if your lazy and know how to work a drone, this is crazy 🤣 good excersize.
The puzzle toys like the one you showed my doberman worked out that she could hild it in her mouth an throw it up in the air on a hard foor and smash it, all the sand from it on the floor!!!
My Doberman loves tug of war and me too ❤❤
How can I introduce toys to my doberman
Gracias Señor!! :D
I guess my dog will never see snow since I live in the desert😢🥺😭
My Doby is not a fan off baths any suggestions
If you take your dog to a lake, take him or her to a lake with little or preferably no boat traffic. If the option isn't available then take him or her to a cordoned off area of the lake designated for swimming.
That's a great point, Harold! Boats definitely aren't safe for them to be around and will probably cause more harm/anxiety/fear than good. Especially if your Dobie isn't used to being around all the noise and commotion they can cause in the water.
Great video thank you! I bring my boy anywhere I possibly can. We love doing new activities together.
That's great to hear, Evan! You'll probably really enjoy looking up events near you on the InfoDog.com website, then! Hope you're able to share some new experiences together now because of this video! :)
@@DobermanPlanet thank you so much I was unaware of this site. I will try it out and let you guys know how it works.
I have this same exact flirt pole! It was the best thing I ever bought for my doberman. She gets super excited for it and doesn't take much time to tire her out. Definitely worth the investment and you can buy replacement parts for the ends of it. :)
Yeah my dobie loves his as well. He ended up chewing through the Bungie cord though
In regards to swimming how about a inground pool? Noticed you had one too. Or is the chlorine a no go? Great video! Thanks.
That's a great question! Here is an in-depth article about Dobermans swimming: www.dobermanplanet.com/getting-your-doberman-to-love-swimming/. But to answer your question, no, the chlorine isn't harmful as long as it's being used at safe levels!
@@DobermanPlanet Awesome thanks for confirming and will read the article.
Great vid John, any chance on doing some stuff for the older Dobes, who may be on restrictions as per some exercises and activities?
Just a suggestion (something I do with my dogs) is a mix of fetch and hide and seek. It’s easier to do outside if they’re trained off-leash. Just throw a stick and then hide behind a bush or tree for them to find you
Happy new year and thank you been meaning to shake up the routine 😁
But this was bad!)
Thanks so much for everything.
"they tend to love swimming, but they're not the best swimmers"
yes. my dog is 1.5 yr old and he looooooves swimming and diving into the water at the natural beach near where we live. however, i once recently tossed his ball into the water around where we normally had no problem, but neither of us realized how deep it was...he dove right in and i had to go in after him when his head went under and didn't immediately come back up! by the time i got to him, he had already come back to the shallow area, but he gave me a good scare lol
our dobie literally while swimming will dive down to get her toy as it is falling to the bottom of our pool.
Yeah the laser is also good out in the back yard. It gets all the energy out of them!
Its weird to see Dobermans with mutilated tails and ears. I do hope a law against docking comes to pass so you can see the true beauty of this breed.
I really appreciate your content, I'm gathering information so I can adopt my own dobie girl in the next year. Thanks so much!
