@@daphnieleggett5793 In the stage musical, the "I can find my way home without you" argument takes place between Nina and Benny, actually

I really like the way they did the "Abuela, are you alright?" line. Instead of it being Usnavi and Abuela alone in the room after he's gone to check on her by himself, they're in a room full of friends but in the excitement Usnavi still notices that something is up and leans over to quietly ask if she's okay. I just really like that. I like that it's him picking up on something being off with her.
I did not expect it
シJulia I’m sorry to say you’re incorrect. Unless we watched different versions of the movie, the line “Abuela are you alright?” as heard in this song came at the point where they were gathered in her apartment playing Bingo. The scene in her bedroom comes moments after.
@@juliamarshall9164 you are talking about the Broadway version, not the movie.
@@caty2428 in the broadway version they revealed that abuela was the winner of the lottery
❤🎉😂😊
In the movie they’re way more chill about the blackout. They just chillin at abuelas house. But In the musical it’s straight up panicking
I attribute some of that to the musical taking place in a time before most people had cell phones with flashlights built in, so everyone was in pitch blackness. Now in 2021, the lights go out, and everyone can just pull a flashlight out of their pocket and see at least a little bit.
There's also no fight that leads to a riot in the movie.
But in the play they did use the screen of their phones as light source, so...
I actually read why that is. They removed the rioting and looting from the blackout bc due to the political climate of the last few years they didn't want to give the impression latinos are basically two seconds away from erupting into violence when given even the slightest opportunity.
That said they still panic a bit since it means that nobody can find anyone else, the heat is unbearable without any air conditioning or fans, and since people are already not doing great a lack of power could result in significant problems. It's just they work together through it this time
@@Samantha-vg5ro do you know when this is supposed to take place?? i always thought it was present day until i heard john m chu talking about having to age the advertising on the bodega.
It’s because of the Trump administration if you make a pro Latin American film that then shows them to be looters it just supports his statements that they are criminals.
No one is talking about this one line...
“I CANT FIND USNAVI!”
literally sent shivers down my spine
Ikr I love the power and emotion in her voice omg!!!😍😍😍
LITERALLY MY FAVORITE LINE
its unreal!
she was SCREAMING OKKKKK
The "look at the fireworks fly, light up the night sky" chorus always gives me chills
It instantly reminds me of Disney harmonies - specifically Main Street USA era vibes. We all know Lin loves Disney and this song chorus truly embodies it.
I was shocked the first time I heard it
Me too :) Lin just does these magic musical moments
I have loved it since 2010
July 4th:
This scene...in the movie...you don't understand. I was so full of emotions.
Same here
when abuela started singing "we are powerless"
I just- idk - I loved it
Same it made me so excited
The pure conflict between the beauty of the community coming together and what we all could see happening to abuela really made this scene interesting
It wassss like that first "We are powerless" hit on a different level. And I'm glad to see the changes in the interaction between Usnavi and Vanessa. Overall, I'm very happy with how this scene played out in the movie and I enjoyed the chaos and panic during the blackout. It enhanced a whole bunch of feelings.
When abeula died I was sobbing 😭
Did anyone realize they brought back the original actress who played abuela in the original musical! She did amazing and obviously the entire cast!
Yup!
I have not been so hyped to see an OBC member since Harvey Fierstein did Hairspray Live
the entire original broadway cast is doing all backup vocals. they are shown for a few seconds in certain scenes especially the finale. original grafetti Pete is the bartender at the club.
Also Chris jackson made a cameo as the icecream man also lin was defenitly there
Absolutely loved how they changed the lyrics for Vanessa and Usnavi's part!
The interaction was awesome
Same!!! It was brilliant whoever came up with thta! I was squealing in the theater !
It was a brilliant move!
I always felt Vanessa was left out in the original, and I'm loving that they gave more justice and chemistry to the love story of Usnavi and Vanessa. I think Benny and Nina's love story was way more told in the original, it's great, but, letting Usnavi and Vanessa interact more was a great move..
@Iman Firdaus Yeah that's what I was thinking. It was a good part and all but it would've made more sense if we focused on Usnavi being too nervous to dance with Vanessa and avoiding her instead of Vanessa leaving him to dance.
SO ARE WE ALL OBSESSED WITH THAT ONE LINE……….
YES

@@G3rd3n real nice!
@@gracepotvin8858 you barely even gave me a chance all evening-!
Some of y'all need to watch the movie before judging. The changes were made for a reason. It's less frantic sounding because we have visuals to make up for it with movie magic, whereas in staged musicals you have to portray everything for the back row so it has to be more in-your-face. It's also like 13 years later and some of it was changed to fit today rather than a decade ago. Go watch the dang movie!
YES! Once you see the movie, your perspective changes on it and you understand why! You picture what actually happens in the movie while listening to the song!
i got to see the movie it was amazing! my favortie part was the camrea shots in 96,000

@@deluxray9977 I saw the movie and I was repulsed by how bad it was
@@timtimothy5405 it's not "omg so repulsive bad"
I love how the phrase "back up back up" has a dual meaning because they are talking about the power coming "back up", but visually they are setting up fireworks and are telling the crowd to "back up" from the fireworks.
Ik when I realised it made me like the song even more. I think the first back up means power coming on, and the next two are telling people to back away.
triple meaning if you were to count the musical's context, there the back up was directed to robbers trying to "bombard the store until you aint gotta store no more"

Isn’t that how Usnavi abandoned Vanessa?
some tiktokers use this without even knowing what the scene is
Even though the Nina and Benny part was cut out, this new version with Usnavi and Vanessa is outstanding. It adds to their characters and makes them a bit different than the original version, but especially Usnavi. And can we just all agree that Lin Manuel is a lyrical genius and Anthony Ramos is killing it as Usnavi!! 🇵🇷❤️🌟🇵🇷
Ehhhh I’m kinda iffy about this version of blackout. Abuela, Nina and Benny’s parts being cut from the number completely takes away from the intensity of this song ultimately making it kinda lack luster :/. I feel like they could’ve kept Nina and Benny’s parts while also adding to the intensity of Usnavi’s and Vanessa’s relationship.
@@trevonte3723 honestly yes 😞 i was so hyped for this song since its my fave, but it feels dry and not frenetic. Im scared of watching the movie now
@@AtomicWhiskers Ah don't be scared! They had to make these changes to make the movie flow better (because obviously they can't copy the stage exactly). I saw the movie last night and I gotta say, as a fan of the original musical this was a BRILLIANT adaptation. I cried twice!
@@trevonte3723 me too, benny and nina’s relationship was a great parallel to vanessa and uznavi’s imo and it showed really well
@@RithSV but as someone who’s seen and adores the stage version, you’re gonna be a little disappointed because the aspects of the song that were cut is what made the number great. Some of the changes that were made were quite unnecessary and kinda made some of the moments less emotionally impactful. Blackout fell a little short and wasn’t as intense as I thought it would be on screen.

Nina and Benny’s kiss was so iconic in the stage version :(
Yeah, the movie downplayed Nina and Benny's romance plot. But still , the movie has its own style
Why did they change it!
@@jibekmechler139 I think they wanted to focus on Vanessa's and Usnavi's romance plot more, but they did sacrifice a lot of the substance on Benny and Nina's relationship for it
@@kentinson1670 I would have enjoyed the movie even more if that was not the case
@@kaitlyn.b31 I can forgive that
The dynamic of Sonny and Graffiti Pete protecting the bodega from looters and illuminating the sky so people could find their way home was powerful in the original play and it raised the stakes of the situation they were in. it was inspired by an actual NY blackout and what Latino bodega owners experienced when the streets were in chaos. I was disappointed to hear the cut.
Seeing the movie today though and I’m excited for it - big fan of the play.
Well, they decided to cut the looters because they didn't want to perpetuate the impression that violence and chaos necessarily accompanies these blackouts in Latino communities. Plus, in this version Sonny and Pete still illuminate the sky with fireworks so people can find their way home.
@@yoyoeldas good thought - yeah i think that’s why they did it too,. I understand not wanting to perpetuate an impression but the reality is that chaos accompanied the 1999 Washington Heights blackout and other blackouts throughout history. From spoiled food in bodegas to some looting to a mess in the subways - don’t think the “Blackout” movie version fully displayed the high stakes of the moment which i think took away from the song’s power.
Saw the movie though, overall i loved it - seeing our people repped on screen like that was amazing.
@@louielove817
Lin-Manuel was going for a more positive vibe over historical accuracy. Which is something he did quite often with Hamilton too.
i believe in the actual blackout there was only one instance of looting
@@louielove817 the movie doesn't take place in 1999. It takes place sometime during or after 2014, being that they mention modern things such as John Wick.
Change is good. Change is what allows a Broadway story to work on screen. Appropriate for this version of the story, change allows the movie and this song especially to hone in on Usnavi and Vanessa, a pairing I always felt was underdeveloped on the stage. And change gave us a new emotional transition into a re-contextualized Paciencia Y Fe. But damn do I miss the grand act-finishing "En Washington Heights" accompanied by one last firework and music sting. This movie slaps, but it does not replace the stage version. It exists by its side as a companion piece, and I'm glad it does.
couldnt agree more. if this version were accurate to the musical, it would get rid of the musical's purpose. if they just made a movie that is identical to the musical, why not just listen to the musical or just start another broadway tour, plus it would get stale.
Exactly. If you took a stage musical and just copied and pasted it into a film it wouldn’t work. Things need to change for film because they don’t work as well. So of course, it’s always upsetting when a certain song or plot line is cut, but film is so different from the stage.
It’s like the new DEH, movie. I know they’re adding more of Evans redemption at the end, because if a film ended off the way the stage production did, it would be terrible. But on stage the ending works.
Change is also a matter of opinion. In my opinion, this didn't work on screen. The thing that connected me to this musical is gone. The film became Usnavy centric, and with that ended up losing so much of the other characters character development.
If you wanted change you'd make a new film. A new show. Call it something else. But this wasn't the moment for change. Not when claiming it to be bringing something from the stage to a screen. You don't bring change when attempting to replicate, you bring it for something new. I don't think bringing back an old show is the right time to bring change.
@@shipitdontsinkit8346 I think you've got a rather close-minded idea of adaptation. The movie IS something new, and was never trying to simply replicate the musical. If it had replicated the musical beat for beat, it likely would have either sucked as a movie or removed the need for live performance of the musical. By focusing on Usnavi's longing for the Dominican Republic turning into appreciation for Washington Heights, and toning down the other plotlines for more thematic relevance, the film can flow more cohesively, benefiting the medium. And as a fan of the original, it's not like I agree with every single change the film makes. But again--the movie's not a replacement, and that is largely because it deviates from the original, which is still right there for enjoyment. I can still appreciate each for their own merits because each version exercises the strengths of the respective medium they belong to. The idea that change does not belong in turning one time's stage story into a fundamentally different medium's take on it in a different, changed time is silly to me--you don't eat breakfast cereal with the fork you eat steak with, do you?
Idk but it was satisfying hearing Usnavi and Vanessa not being able to find each other. Like the "I can't find usnavi!" And then the "Venessa.. Venessa..!"

My god I dig this version so much!!! Like legit I don’t miss the original musical version because it still exists. If I wanted something exactly like the original Blackout, I’d listen to the one on the cast album. This one is so fucking cool in its own way. The instrumental!! The segue into “we are powerless” at the beginning!! The new Sonny and Pete rap!! The wonderfully intense Vanessa/Usnavi argument!! Fuck I love this to an unhealthy degree
" If I wanted something exactly like the original Blackout, I’d listen to the one on the cast album. " This. So much!!
The changes make me so much more excited - not sure yet which version I might eventually love more, but that doesn't even matter because the joy is in having that choice in the first place
This is how I feel about most musical adaptations, if I wanted it to be exactly the same I would listen to OBC! I love when movies change parts here in there

I'm obsessed with the way Vanessa sings "I can't find Usnavi". I think it's more isolated in this version so it really stands out
omg the new usnavi and Vanessa's part, I love this😭
FRRRRR I LOVE IT SO MUCH
I am obsessed with the fight between Usnavi and Vanessa in this. It's my second favorite bit in the movie. They performed it so well and surprised me so much.
i CANNOT STOP LISTENING TO THAT usnavi/vanessa part OMFG!!! ITS GIVING WHAT IT WAS SUPPOSED TO GIVE!!!! and u guys we’re all sad abt the nina/benny story being cut short but if im being honest i loved seeing vanessa and usnavi being in the spotlight this time around. i always felt like vanessa was usnavis arm candy in the musical and thats fine and everything because she wasn’t really a main main character but here i love knowing more about her and more abt how her and usnavi feel abt eachother. and if you think abt it, we already know nina and bennys story and just because it wasn’t shown in the film doesnt mean it doesn’t exist or didnt happen. with that being said at least us theatre ppl can keep nina/bennys story for only us haha, i think it’s good that we get to keep that bit for ourselves. its like we know something other ppl dont, bc we do. idk just try to keep a positive perspective i guess because the movie still came out really good! plus its not like the og soundtrack doesnt exist anymore! (:
(also im kinda saying all this bc ive seen ppl complaining sm all over the place, like i get it, but come on guyz)
Sameeee
I’ve not seen the Broadway version but I always got the impression they weren’t a couple UNTIL Blackout. The movie said they dated before she moved to California and broke up when she left for Stanford. Is this a change for the movie? It may explain why their relationship is different, they’re exes not crushes.
it’s so damn good😭😭😭
While I understand what you mean and I am glad that Vanessa got more fleshed out in the movie, I do still think that it would have been nice if they had also incorporated more of Benny and Nina’s storyline into the movie, just because without it, a lot of their relationship in the movie feels so weird and underdeveloped. Idk, it just sucks to me that Nina and Benny’s characterization and storyline had to suffer just so that they could give Vanessa and Usnavi more development.
it backfired cause nina and benny are ultimately the more compelling relationship and were the MAIN love story in the show and in the film theyre boring cause theres no effort to get the audience emotionally invested. 🤷🏾♀️ vanessa and usnavi in this film were dry and had no chemistry to me. tbh nina and benny didnt even have that much either. but they didnt even have a proper storyline to showcase it. the musical is waay better. and they sidelined the only main black characters BOOOO
You been shaking your ass for half of the heights 😂 loved it
It shows something of Usnavi's character, in both the movie and musical, how he goes to check on Abuela and be with her instead of going to check on his store and guard it from potential looting.

Maybe its not as frantic as the musical

Blackout has always been one of my favs
“You barely even danced with me.”
“Don’t make me laugh! I’ve been trying all night you’ve been shaking your a/ for like half of the heights!”
All the different lyrics singing together as the lights go out give it that panicked but unified feeling as the harmonies match. Then the “look at the fireworks” give the finally calmed feeling as they light up the night sky
The “I CANT FIND USNAVI!” Got to me. Like damn you hit that perfectly 😳
When abuela died in this scene I couldn't I couldn't take it-

I get so many chills during this song. I wasn't super familiar with the musical before watching the movie, and I was so terrified during this scene - I was expecting destruction (either looters or for the fireworks to start one of the buildings on fire - yeah I don't know why I expected that to happen but I did). And every single part gives me chills even now. "We are powerless." "Somebody better open these Goddamn doors." Vanessa/Usnavi/Benny/Nina looking for each other. Sonny and Graffiti Pete. SONNY AND GRAFFITI PETE (my fav part, deserves repeating). "Look at the fireworks!" "You abandoned me." "We're not alone tonight." Just everything. I love it so much.

The change for Vanessa and Usnavi was so good!
"You've been shaking your ass for half of the heights" had me spitting out my juice. It surprised be BUT I won't lie, I liked the realistic argument those two had with the actual curse words, it brings a bit of humanity into the song. Because in truth they're couples that get into big arguments that orbit around the jealousy feeling. And yeah some of these songs may cus a bit, but that's what makes it ten times more realistic and you could just get lost in the music. I also liked how he asked his Abuela if she was alright. He sounded both shy, nervous, and sweet at the same time-all at once, in that brief verse. 💛🖤💛🖤Loved the song, it was perfect in every way.
Lin never give us a bad moive
aight but that new verse between Usnavi and Vanessa its really good

Gives more character to Vanessa and Usnavi and develops their relationship more, takes away some drama from Benny and Nina, Sony and Graffiti Pete still get their moment to shine, the way it leads to Abuela's Pacienca y Fe and ofc the genius of the line "you've been shaking your ass for like half of the Heights"

This is definitely my favorite song off the original album cuz I love the chaos, and I was and still am VERY impressed. Ten out of ten
i really was expecting the last "IN WASHINGTON HEIGHTS" (ToT)
It was really catchy tho I cant stop listening to that part 😭
The "somebody better open these got damn doors " was always tough to me.
I JUST WATCHED THIS MOVIE AND THEYVE MADE SO MUCH CHANGES BUT IT WAS STILL SO GOOD WITH ALL THOSE CHANGES HONESTLY THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES/MUSICALS I KNOW
y'all are talking abt "you been shaking your ass for like half of the heights" but what makes my theatre kid heart scream is the harmony in "LOOK AT THE FIREWORKS" 😍😍 like NOBODY IS TALKING ABOUT IT. the bit thats trending on tiktok, ("usnavi all night you barely even danced with me") isnt even all that good, i mean its great but it doesnt even compare to the "light up the night skyyyyyy" 😩
“We are POWERLESS”
"Illuminate the community" omg I love this line
The double meaning in this is beautiful.
I was listening to this song in the car earlier when we got hit by someone. Right when it said “Look at the fireworks, light up the night sky” we felt the impact. And then it said “we are powerless.” That really hits me now as I’m remembering everything.
Look at the fireworks!
I love Anthony’s voice 😩😩
Not gonna lie, as much as I miss Nina and Benny's argument and iconic kiss, i'm really digging the added Usnavi and Vanessa part.
As much as I loved the original stage production and the original broadway soundtrack, Lin made the best changes to the movie version and it only makes it so much better. Stage and screen are two very different things and not everything can transfer over, not to mention other narrative changes and re-contextualised scenes means that changes to lyrics are necessary. I loved the Benny/Nina part, but the movie just didn't allow for it in the same way. Replacing it with Vanessa/Usnavi only allowed for a further development of their relationship, something we didn't see much of in the broadway show. I love this, I love Lin and all his works, and i hope others enjoy too!
One of my favorites. (this or Benny’s Dispatch) This song is literally perfect. Like there is nothing you can change about it to make it better. “Look at the fireworks” 🧡💛💙💜 It just brings me pure happiness 🥺
@Unshaken Productions I haven’t seen the original but I like the modern flair the movie has.
It's kind of interesting how they changed this section on the song 1:51 - 2:11 to be a conversation between Vanessa and Usnavi instead of Benny and Nina like in the Stage production
honestly
“YOUVE BEEN SHAKING YOUR ASS FOR HALF OF THE HEIGHTS” always gets me💕
This girl in my class was singing this today. I asked her if she heard it from the movie or tiktok...she said tiktok.
I-
Whyyyyy
At least it’s getting more recognition I guess? I was listening to this since the movie came out and then came back to listen and it has way more views than before.
@@AbcDef-zp4lp I suppose so but it also annoys me because people know it as 'the tiktok song' and don't actually care about where it's from
@@avrilbrown5273 Yes I agree
1:38 🔥 the main which we love
😪
Yo the movie surpassed all expectations
The drums in this and general orchestrations are EPIC.
this soundtrack may be the best i have ever heard
1:38 is why you all came here😎
Why do I started crying every time they say “look at the fireworks”
