Well you can always just not put it in the machine washer (I’m assuming that’s what you meant by wash it) because one, some carpets aren’t machine washer safe and two, there are other ways to wash it. (Granted they may be more time-consuming but I think it’s worth it)
Whoa! I thought the tape was a cheat for sewing it together instead of pinning it! What kind of tape did you use? And what would you use for a more permanent approach? Sewing, rug paste, etc?
I thought that was pretty insane to see how well it turned out with using tape. I wonder how durable it will be. For making it more permanent, perhaps sewing would be best. Maybe sewing to some more carpet mesh? Or like you said. Carpet glue, but gluing to the carpet mesh? IDK. I really like this idea, but would definitely need it to be more permanent. Especially with having both kids and pets. Id need to be able to clean it without it coming apart so easily.

It’s a small amount of space - wouldn’t take long and some kind of woven reinforcement layer on the back would keep those suckers where they need to be, reduce shed from unfinished edges, etc.

People who want the rug to last over time should still be advised to consolidate the whole thing by sewing a piece of fabric all over the back. Because with tape alone, it may not last long.

For actual home use and practicality, sew rug tiles together or to a reinforcement interfacing so they don’t come loose with use.

I used to make whole area rugs this way using free carpet remnants. 😊

If you were worried about it staying I think some waterproof spray adhesive and one of those grippy nonslip mats on the bottom would help do the trick
