- Past Lives is widely regarded as 2023’s best love story. However, there is so much more to Celine Song’s debut feature than this, and I’d argue that love isn’t even the main theme of the film. So what exactly is Past Lives about ?

LOVED THIS VIDEO. This was one of my favorite films from last year. I watched it alone in a cinema and we're less than 5 people in total there. It was an experience. I cried for most of it. I felt so much. Not just in the love/romance aspect... but ultimately with the idea of growing up, moving on, living, and accepting our choices with so much room for understanding, patience, and grace. It was so raw and tender and real. I loved it. I love your video about it, too. Thanks for what you do.
Hey Mae I hope you’re keeping well ! It’s my personal favourite from last year as well but I still have a fair amount to watch 😂. Your words captured it beautifully and I’m jealous that you got to see it at the cinema ! My local cinema tends not to show most A24/independent films so I usually have to wait for them to release on blu ray. First world problems for sure 😂 Thank you so much as always ❤️
Now this analysis I really looked forward to, having enjoyed the film so, so much. And Joe, you did not disappoint. A deeply thoughtful unpacking of a visceral screen drama that delivers a richly satisfying story of connection. It was so good to experience Celine's Song's well observed, though sometimes uncomfortable, life journeys of the two protagonists. Writing, casting and direction are so finely balanced to create that silken thread of connection, even though they were developing in very different directions. And although we fear so often throughout that this delicate thread will break . . it never does. I enjoyed so much observing their yearning without lust, especially Teo Yoo as Hae Sung who looks so adoringly at her, while coming to eventually respect her choices. I agree, its the film that stands out from 2023 and thank you for your intelligent and sensitive post mortem.
Hey Bob, I hope you have been keeping well and thank you as always for your insight ! It really is an extraordinary debut feature on every level. I really hope we see Teo Yoo in more projects moving forward. He was in Decision To Leave as well but as a minor character and I haven’t rewatched the film since to notice him haha 😆 It seems Celine Song is already working on her next feature titled the Materialists, so it will be very interesting to see how that turns out.
