Saw Sleep Token on Monday night in OVO Hydro in Glasgow. I’m am absolutely certain that they will turn Download into the ritual that it absolutely needs to be. They will really make it special and spectacular.
Was there too. Also been in Amsterdam. The experience is unique, you can watch any video of their european tour and it is consistently amazing. Saw them as an opening act for Slipknot in 2023 for the first time, 2024 saw them twice headlining and I can't wait to see them in 2025 at download festival already.
I think the download Fest Sleep Token discourse is absolutely absurd. "Music fans pissed that music festival hired music band as headliner". Anyway, hope you're well, Steve. Great idea for an interview. Will listen to the whole thing when I have some free time. Peace.
Haha. Yeah, it’s a funny one. When there are headliners booked that I’m not interested in personally I’m never like mad at the festival for booking them. We can’t all like all the same bands, if we did it would mean a serious lack of variety in rock music which would be a bad thing.
I really hope sleep token headlining download is the push we all need to move rock and metal forward. We really need a new generation of headliners. It shouldn’t take 10 or 15 years for bands to be considered “worthy” I saw Sleep Token for my first time this spring at a 5,000 seat theater here in Arizona and it was not a big enough venue for them. By far the craziest merch line I’ve ever seen also.
I agree to a certain point, no issue with new bands headlining it’s very much needed. I feel sorry for bands like BMTH who did similar things 8/9 years ago and didn’t get the shot until 2023, but put on the best show I’ve ever seen. I think it sits a bit funny with only one successful album. I hope their production carries well for the non fans as the show is what is needed.
Great work Steve - you’ve quickly become my 14 year old daughter’s favourite reactor and to see you bringing us further insights like this from the Download team is so cool… We’ll be at the O2 this Friday to see ST (our second time after Wembley last year, let’s hope Vessel is fit and well this time🤞) super excited, my wife is finally coming out to see them too (her first time!) we’ve converted her 😉 and your reactions have helped us do that - much obliged! 👍
This is very cool to hear, thanks for letting me know! 💙 I will also be there on Friday! I’m so excited about it 🤘🏻So cool that my reactions have helped people develop an interest in the band.
I was so naive to Sleep Token up until a few years ago. Total snobbery about it. Then i opened my ears and listened. They could become the most successful UK rock and metal band of all time, if their trajectory continues. And they deserve it. Natural talent will always shine and rise to the top. Worship.
Really interesting conversation. It’s good to hear different perspectives from the industry. I thought I recognised Dannika then remembered she was in a band called Evarose.
Finally a festival that gets the gatekeeping in this community needs to end! Let's get some of these other solid bands like Gideon, While Sheep Sleeps, Bury Tomorrow, so many others to fill some of these bigger slots.
Saw them in Manchester on Tuesday. I’ve been going to gigs since I was 10 years old. First gig was the Sex Pistols at the swan in Sheffield. I stood behind the bar with strict instructions not to move one inch. I’ve seen Korn, Slipknot (with Joey) Metallica too many times, Rammstein 9 times. The list goes on….. I can safely say I’ve never experienced anything like Tuesday night. Incredible musicians, the crowd stood in awe. I’m 58 and I cried for gods sake!!! Utterly magical.
This is absolutely fantastic, I work in Live Production but on the equipment/creative side, it's so interesting to hear from booking and what goes into the decision making. I'm not a huge fan of Sleep Token, but I completely agree that it's exciting that a band can have such a meteoric rise and not have to "earn it", which normally means they made their best music thirty years ago but are still plugging away. I'd love to hear about tour bookers too. Why do they select the venues they do? Do certain venues not allow metal acts for crowdsurfing/mosh pit reasons? What's the logic when the support is very similar, or very different from the headline? What are the dynamics when the support is almost as big or potentially bigger than the headline? How has Brexit and other visa changes impacted foreign acts touring in the UK?
Sleep token are headlining within a timeline no faster than Linkin Park, and no one can deny they were in their prime on their 1st and 2nd album. Bands shouldn't have to wait for 5, 6, 7 albums and decades be "worthy". Pop culture puts headliners in one 1 album. If it brings ticket sales and customers, DO IT!
I just saw sleep token last night, and I must say as one of those people who was skeptical , I am fully converted. Sleep token are absolutely the band for the job. Also ( I’ve booked tickets already hshshshsb 🎉) I’m over the moon that spirit box , BFMV green day and now sleep token are all going to be there!!!
Ridiculous that people think it is not Sleep Token's time. Download is a professionally run business and they know their audience... no festival lineup will please everyone and it's refreshing to see more bands being given headline slots.
About Sleep Token A weekend before download, they headline the biggest Rockfestival in Germany (Rock am Ring) on Sunday. And it's not out which band is coming on Sunday too. So everyone say it's LP.. It would be so massive to see ST before LP on the f**king mainstage. 80k people in front of them. Have they ever been on such a big stage? I don't know.. I am really stocked for sleep token. I have tickets I will be there just for them.
Yep! You should find that on Spotify and Apple Podcasts. I have recorded a reaction to the new Bury Tomorrow actually. Not sure when it’ll end up on the channel but next week or so probably.
I feel like a lot of people are just arbitrarily set on not like Sleep Token solely because they've become so popular is such a relatively short time period. It's almost like they think bands need to suffer years (or decades) of hardship and obscurity before they make it to be legitimately good bands. Forget the fact that Sleep Token didn't just form a few years ago but have been at this for 8+ years, but they act like they didn't put in the work to earn this when they absolutely have.
30.33 It's booking agents. They decide Gore is gonna happen and then just push on gore, it makes sense for download to book because they've put money into it.
I think its the hangover from monsters of rock . it became download and then these titan bands iron maiden megadeth slayer etc etc .. just kind of kept hold of the top spot cos the audience in the 80s have been able to attend as adults and now its "dying off " as are these titan bands its time for diff stuff . My only complaint 2024 , pantera second stage - those boys deserved 1st .
you are interviewing EVERYONE and I’m absolutely here for it.
It’s been a busy few weeks 😅 Fun though!
I’ve just got back from Co-op Live Sleep Token gig in Manchester . They were incredible live .

@@armand1mthey were so good that naysayers are starting to say it’s all mimed to a backing track. ROTFLMAO!
I saw Sleep Token last night, they were incredible and are definitely headliner material. Sick band
I love hearing behind the scenes interviews! This was very fun to listen to. More of that :D

I’d also like add I’m not trying to say they shouldn’t by gatekeeping- more I feel sorry for bands who have worked longer to get to the same point 😂
Could've listened to this for hours, loved it 🖤

I went to the show in Manchester for my first ever concert and I was blown away by how much better they are live than all the videos I've seen of them

All good questions! Would love to have that discussion with someone for the podcast eventually.

Wow. That's Dannika of Evarose. So great seeing her again.
HAHA you're right! I knew i recognized her from something, from exactly that era.
Imagine if Sleep Token played last. What better way to close out a festival than with Euclid?
Ugly cry for sure haha
Green Day was awesome at Download , Paris 2017 🤘🔥

Biggest answer is because they big enough thats it end of discussion if a band can sell out dates at 02 then they big enough
I've been aware of Dannika since she was in the band Evarose, I had no idea this was what she was up to now
Steve will you check out Drumeo's latest vid with ii from sleep token? It's a new one of "the offering".
👀
Is there an audio of this uploaded anywhere please?
Also, can you react to the new Bury Tomorrow track 🖤🙏🏼
