With Japan recently falling into recession and 1.3 quadrillion yen worth of debt, how can Japan’s central bank afford to raise interest rates? It seems to me the Bank of Japan’s interest in stabilizing the yen is at odds with reality and the Ministry of Finance. Some people smarter than me seem to think so as well, as some huge bets have recently been placed against the yen. What am I missing?
