We live in Western Pa. and Have around 100 Acres of Land, About 1/2 is ours the rest is my moms, We have 4 kids and two grandchildren, 3 Golden Retrievers and one Cat. We enjoy working on our property and making improvements. We sell firewood and soon will be selling hardwood lumber.
It would be nice if you could come back in a week or so and show us how it's working.
When I graduated high school 48 years ago I started doing construction work for a local contractor in Lewisburg, PA. One of the more distasteful jobs I was assigned was installing a French drain around the exterior of a new house. I had to do the job, by myself and by hand in super hot, humid July weather. Hand digging the trench for the drain tile and wheeling that gravel down into the foundation pit made me do some serious thinking about my future. It was that job which made me decide that college wasn't a bad idea. The rest is history!
😂😂
Good morning everyone. 75º in Kansas City. Expected to hit 100º this afternoon. Stay safe, be humble & kind and have a day.
Good morning Phil and people!! 84 feels like 95 at 8 o'clock in the morning in the Florida Keys. It's also the last day of lobster Mini season!
Good Morning Phil & Friends! 🙂
Good morning Phil & all you peeps that are reading this!!
Ah, we bailed out just in time! Got back to NCNC last night. Y’all take care.
Hey Phil. It’s only supposed to get up to 97 here in Sedalia area, but it’s the humidity that is a killer. Tomorrow and Saturday, they are predicting rain. Good thing, because we are having a semi-annual family reunion on Saturday.
I would have capped the open bell end of the pipe to prevent 4" hole for sediment to enter pipe.
Agreed...
Bill on the Hill... :~)
Like Julie Andrew’s sang in the Sound of Music, These are a few of my favorite things. Dump trailer, stone, excavator, zero turn mower. Then top it off backing up trailer on a very long driveway! Mike is having a great day! 😁😁
My thoughts too!!!
Good morning. We've had over 7 inches of rain here in Tucson in July alone. But the desert has soaked it all up. Have a day!
Where's the discharge point?
What about fine particles washing in from the top and clogging the system?
You can put a mesh over the pipe, but that mesh also can get clogged with dirt rather fast. A french drain, over time, can itself get filled with dirt, but in materials and labor, it is a relatively cheap and fast solution to a surface water drainage issue.
Ideally in this instance, you're just looking for a place for the rain water to drain to (the pipe) until it can drain/seep into the ground. This helps it drain and prevent it from pooling on the surface.
@@daytonafuntim I was told straw. Cover the gravel with straw.
I have a plate in my neck and can't look back very well. I'm jealous of how often I see Mike working backing up.
Rex here, Mike. Once again I learned how to install this kind of pipe and the best way to seat and fill the trench. You provide all this knowledge for free and to our benefit! Thank you, Mike!
Another useful project, protecting your investment in the brick house and property. The guy loves his gravel!
I like the trees that were planted.
I like that technique where you knock the excess into the ditch. I'll try to remember that next time I'm digging a French drain with the bx23s.
Thanks Mike! I needed this one..Similar project needed here in the farm.
Ahhh - stone - the best fixer for anything dirt related 😂. When you said that you had an area you couldn’t mow - I heard there is a new invention. They call it a “push mower” 😂 thanks for the info on French Drains! Hello to Hunter & the WHOLE FAMILY! Marcus from Chesapeake VA.
Morning Morgans and friends. Almost Friday! Have a day
Good morning HOM!
Mike is never far away from another load of stone. Good video.
How does water flow in the pipe if the holes are down. I have heard there has been an argument for years if the holes go up or down. Would love to hear your explanation on a video sometime. Thanks Mike I love your videos
I am no expert, not ever done a French drain, BUT common sense tells me if the clay is not allowing the water to sink down into the ground then you would have a standing water issue like Mike is pointing out with the ground wet from no drainage. If the water is not going down into the ground then the holes in the pipe matter none as far as water getting out, rather the water gets into the pipe through the holes and unobstructed has the path through the pipe downhill to drain out elsewhere..... Hope that helps. ☺
Thanks for sharing with us Mike, hopefully you have gotten rid of the damp area of the spring. They can sure be a nuisance but can also be great if they are contained and used. Good luck with your project. Fred. 🙏🏻🙏🏻👍👍👏🏻👏🏻👋👋
Black perforated pipe with the sock works great for me
@Hello Robert how are you doing
Good evening from Glacier National Park. Have a productive day.
Thanks Mike I always enjoy the videos. Hope you and all the family are doing well.
Good video and explanation. You'll be able to tell from my comment I don't know a thing about French Drains.
As usual, I learned something useful ... holes go on the bottom of the pipe ... I would have done that wrong. I always thought you wanted the water to seep in from the top . Thanks for demonstrating the right way.
Mike makes it easy with that nice big equipment. I’m jealous. If you came here to learn how to install a French drain I highly recommend you also watch the channel from “French drain man”. He covers every possible scenario you may face with water troubles, where you can get supplies and why French drains fail. He has very, very good content on this.
Great video, and very timely. I’m digging some of these next week
You won’t be disappointed with an Exmark!
That sure would make a Beautiful Pond!
What a surprise a OWTM vid involving stone
Hahaha
lol 😂
too funny - this video is sponsored by your local quarry

@Hello Karl how are you doing
Great work there Mike installing that French drain.
Another good, how to video Mike. Thanks for the knowledge.
Phil here from NE Indiana. We use the black corrugated tile around here for all the farm fields. No stone. Dig a trench, put the tile in, cover it up and you're done. Doesn't take long to use up 1,000 foot roll of tile. It is interesting how different parts of the country do things differently. Around here a hill is a little bit higher than your average pitcher's mound. That's not exactly true but the hills you have there so much different than here. You have some serious hills there in PA. I have 48 acres and I can pretty much see all of it from my house. I hope you will show us how this french drain works the next big rain. Thanks for sharing.
Grandson Colton and I put a french drain in 2 years ago. He was 3, he’s 5 now. We still enjoy standing at the outflow and watching the water run out during a storm. Get the umbrella ready, you’ll be doing the same.
You rock! lol. Spent yesterday on my Stihl saw clearing my roads of fallen trees after a big windstorm. Plenty of "I wonder what Mike Morgan would do?" thinking as we worked. Thanks mate.
Nice work, but I wish we could get a camera angle that is further away so we can actually see your equipment work.
Thanks for letting us know how to do a French drain
I love watching the excavator in action. Maybe because I have done so much dirt moving by hand? To see the work done in such a short period of time is instant gratification like framing or splitting firewood.
Great job Mike have a day love from TEXAS
Have put in alot of french drain pipe over the years. We have very sandy soil and have done pretty much the same thing you did, but do to soil, we have used geo textile before putting rock,, then pipe in trench. Works very well. Stay safe and a big hello to the family. See you on the next video!!!
See Mike, it does work!
David I don’t know what to tell you really, my experience in my area this works great. Did one at neighbor cliffs 10 years ago and it works now like the day I put it in. Just because you don’t like my answer doesn’t mean it’s wrong
@@OutdoorsWithTheMorgans You have had different experiences than me. And, you are not wrong just hard headed. There is more than one way to skin a cat. Don't tell BadCat I said that. It is good that we can share different points of view.
on back lawn we had the same coming from our wooded area so i just dug a 30 foot hole concrete piped it added a steel mesh on top and then dropped a wishing well on top, added a sump pump to feed water to the ponds and cattle troughs... works great, also good for watering the rose beds... veg beds... in all i think i got 3 miles of water pipe going around the property from the wishing well... since i put it in i added a perforated tray half way down under water because the visitors began throwing pennies down it and the pump doesnt like pennies...
Episode #229 is where you graded the first time. LOL yeah, I stopped watching this to watch that, then this one for your new and improved version
Great Job Mike! ok, I have to get back to work
@Hello John how are you doing
Nice job on the french drain. I also see you moved that pine out of the way that was in the yard. I get that a lot. Trees across paths or my fields I don't farm but brush hog to keep open. Glad you explained about which direction the holes go when laying the pipe. I have done french drains before with my dad but my logic would have been to put the holes up which is wrong. Been too many years so I had forgotten how we did it back in the day.
Rent a ditch witch. The job is so much easier. I put in hundreds of feet of french drain 25 years ago. It drains a large hill side water shed. I cut the ditch in and left the dirt as a berm. I put in corrugated plastic pipe and covered with 3/4 clean. Because of the berm even if the system fills the water still follows the berm and keeps the water out of my yard. In a heavy rain my system can over top. However my yard has swales the move the water to the creek. This system is installed in the woods in rocky clay and the ditch machine worked just fine.
Too much clay in that soil, squeeze shut on you
Mike I think the French drain is going to help out the wet situation at the brick house!! Great Work Like Always!! 👍👊
More cowbell, I mean stone!! I think you need to change your name to either Stone Morgan, or Mike Stone. "Welcome back everyone. Stone here." Has a nice flow to it. Love the videos keep it up. Kinda disappointed when I don't get my notification by 8am that a new one is up.
Would have been cool to see where the outlet of the pipe is.
looks good Mike... thanks 4 video. be kind.
great video Mike. Gettin ready to put in 3 at my place. Although not as long as yours. Just have a backhoe on one of my tractors so will take a little more time. Thanks
Thank you for sharing.
I’m guessing over Mike’s excavation career he’s seen or talked with folks who know French drains, how to install, how they function etc. Mike - Do a follow up for us post rain fall.
There’s an excellent you tube channel called Gate City Foundation Drainage. A small contractor in NC who installs all sort of drainage solutions. They show before and after. He actually goes back to the job during a down pour to show results.
Was going to post something similar. Another great channel: ua-cam.com/channels/QYkF1jMHlIGxvfQMbfayHw.htmlvideos
This French drain was done wrong.
Morning walk, cup of coffee and a Morgan video, starting my day well!
French drains work good.
Thanks for sharing these backyard landscaping layouts it was enjoyable to view. If this layout was completed, I was curious viewing the end results from an above aerial bird’s-eye view with some drone action. That I think would’ve been ideal.
If your tractor bucket fits in your trailer try scooping out of it. Keeps your product cleaner. Just be gentle not to damage your trailer floor. I do this in my dump for my pool sand witch keeps garbage out of my pool sand. FYI Kevlar Construction out of Charlton Ma.01507 Love the video's
Hey Mike. Way to go on the French drain. I argue with so many people about putting the holes down, it’s nice to see somebody else does it the right way too.
Thanks, liked tour pool video today
Great video Mr Morgan
Another great video Mike.
Cherry leaves are dropping, fall is not far off.
Holes face down because the water will fill up in the trench then as the water rises it enters the pipe. 😁
@Hello Gundlach how are you doing
Had this done to my yard and it works well.
As always Mike another job well done. Your driveway where you widened it looks great. From S. E. Ohio have a wonderful day and give Hunter a big Hello
Forgot then move pipe up to grade works great try it.
I love my E x Mark mower ..... didn’t know what I was missing
Good morning! Back here in NCNC yesterday late afternoon. Still kind of discombobulated from the trip but should get sorted out today when I mow the lawn.
Mike, I was thinking you’d show us a trickle of water coming out of the daylight end of that pipe. I did about a 15’ French drain to solve a wet problem last summer. Used the perforated corrugated pipe with a sock. When I dug out the problem area, water pooled in the trench, and by the time the end of the pipe was laid, the trickle was already coming out. Nothing like water flowing to prove a drain worked! Anyway, enjoyed the video!
Nice job!
Good stuff Mike. Great video, thumbs up.
Smooth Operator!
Good evening from SE Louisiana 29 Jul 21.
Very helpful.
Great video Mike 👍👍👍❤️
Good morning Bronco beard Mike, I think you should do an infomercial for your sinking pond boat with flex seal. Have a great day.👍
Nicely edited Mike. I hope Exmark knows the exposure they are getting here.
Gotta watch French drain man on here will change your life . Im doing 1600 feet of it right now for a customer with major washing problems will be solved . French drain man
Great job!
Hi Mike,, how deep should you dig for a french drain using a compact tractor ???/ Enjoy your videos !!!!!!
I missed your little sidekick Ty! I enjoy going to the rock yard and watching that operator dump his bucket. Your excavator sure makes short work of cleaning up that mucky spot in the yard.
Oh my goodness, Mike! I remember doing a job like that by hand in the middle of winter in frozen ground..... With a pickaxe!
Really neat to see how quickly you completed that! 👍💪
You think that’s bad, I live in an area that is full of underground granite rock. I’m in the middle of jackhammering (and metal rod’ing) in my backyard. Three weeks of this so far…excavating from the side of the house by the front gate, all the way to our backyard storm drain on the opposite site! Soooo tired of this work, but will be in the past in two more weeks.
Perfect. So nice to have the knowledge, skill and equipment to take care of you're properties. Hopefully Levi will arrive home shortly to help. My experience w a beard, there's a period during growth that will itch and bother, but endeavor and that will cease. I think you're beard will look good on you, it's nice and full. I think you should try it even after Bronco is delivered. Outdoor men just look good with a beard! Besides, you're under no obligation to keep a clean shave unless Melissa won't allow it. As always, a very nice video. I sort of expected to see Ty come out and watch, probably too hot for mom and Thea to supervise. See ya tomorrow my friend! 👍🚜❤
Watching you utilize that excavator every time you turn around gives me a thrill like I almost own one myself. I could afford one finally now, but alas I’m too darn old to justify pulling the trigger. You owning that excavator is akin to having a hundred good men ready to do you’re bidding at any given time. Buying that excavator at this time in you’re life might be the wisest decision you’ve ever made ( not counting choosing to get a date with that gal you spotted working in that pizza shop).
Very well stated sir!
The supply yard where you get your stone should sponsor a video or two lol!
I like your new video today you did a really good jop you make it look really nice good jop on your video love your video
I can sing Stoney Ridge Farmer song over your intro music
I'm afraid we can't sign off on the French drain project. You didn't have your supervisor TY OK the finished work!!! Best to all!!! 🙏
I was wondering the same.
Great Video! Literally doing a 550’ French drain from the front of my property to a creek. Will you eventually backfill that and grow grass on top or will be it just be open?
Any gravel in PA seems to grow grass unless driven on.
@@shanereynolds5971 Yeah, my bet was that it will be mostly grown over with grass in 3-5 years.
Mike - do you then cover that with topsoil and plant grass or just leave the 2B exposed ? -- thanks in advance.
And where was the little forman with all this activity at home??
I see the stone addiction has gotten so bad you're now picking it up. 🤣
@Hello Pauly how are you doing
Good morning hunter! From Piqua Ohio. Keep up the good work!
Piqua was my hometown many years ago
@Hello Stanley how are you doing
No filter fabric to burrito wrap it and prevent the soil from clogging the stone and pipe?
Looks like the back yard is crying to become a pond. Maybe a little island in the middle with a foot bridge and a big fence to keep the grandchildren out. :)
Rake the stone, push it back, rake the stone push it back, repeat the length of the trench!
I like to wrap my French drains with fabric, as to prevent the soil from eventually clogging up the stone. In your case with leaving the stone exposed on top I would’ve used fabric on the bottom and sides.
Watch Gate City Foundation Drainage on UA-cam. A whole series on drainage solutions. Excellent content. He does not use fabric or black perforated pipe since it too eventually saturates with sediment.
I use old carpet. It is free. It does not break down if you get the petroleum base carpet backing.
Realistically it's going to clog up, sooner or later, almost no matter _what_ you do. I suspect that dirt and leaves, including grass clippings, washing in from the top will be the biggest issues, and I would have put a fabric cap over the rock 2"-3" below grade, then capped it off with more rock. Then when the drain shows signs of being clogged, hopefully several years or more from now, you can remove the surface rock to inspect and replace if necessary the fabric, then put a fresh layer of rock over the fabric. You could also just removed and replace a short stretch if one part of the drain shows signs of not catching water effectvely.
I need to do that in my yard, but first I need a backhoe. LOL
Hey Mike, I love your videos thank you for all that you do to make them.
I recently ordered KX57-5 Hopefully I’m pleased as you are with it. Best bud
Mike, won't leaving the up grade end open simply start filling the pipe with mud? Seems like putting a cap on the upper end would prolong the pipe filling up with roots and mud. Thanks. It is great to watch you work around the property. Gives me a vicarious participation ... without the property and extra work :-)
It wasn't finished
@Hello Donald how are you doing
Nice that is what I need in front of my porch. I dont have an excavator though. I will have to dig it with a shovel.

Wouldn't it be a good practice to put filter fabric lining the trench?

curious as to why you didn't place spoils in dump trailer with excavator
