Hingis had probably the highest tennis IQ in history. What she lacked in power, she more than made up for in the quality of her shot-making. Also, she had such great timing and saw the ball with laser-like focus.
I agree, had she been able to add little more power to her groundstrokes, specifically her forehand and serve, she could've been the best female player ever.
That’s all true, it’s really too bad she lacked upper body strength because her forehand really sat up to be attacked (if only she could have flattened it out and hit through it instead of using a fairly weak topspin) and also put some juice on her serve, she’d be top 3-4 instead of relegated towards the 8-12th best player all-time so far.
Thank you for uploading this match. Quality of the video is superb! Both of them 17 at the time. Great rivalry 🎾 Martina's movement and backhand was exceptional! As were the winners coming outta Venus's racquet. This should have been the finals.
Hingis is obviously physically outmatched here. But tennis is more than physical. She had quick reflexes, good movement, good variety as well. She definitely maximized her talents. Of course Venus was a physical specimen the likes of women's tennis had not seen in it's 100 years or so. Incredible power, movement, reach, etc. Two amazing players.
Venus was still so gangly and inexperienced back then. She had immense power and athleticism but didn't yet know how to harness and coordinate it. Hingis's ability to redirect the ball and open up the court was sensational.
Can definitely see how the williamses changed the game. Venus' game here is how 98% of the wta play today. Higis style is relegated to a only a few. The quirky ones like hsieh or radwanska
Sound is so superbly clear that you can hear the beads on Venus' hair rubbing each other. On the other hand, neither Venus nor Hingis won any French open. This is the only slam missing on their resume.
Do you have footage of Davenport vs Majoli from this broadcast? It was going on at the same time and I remember NBC showing a few minutes of their match
Don't do anything on that computer while digitizing the video stream, otherwise movement footage is really really choppy. You can see the individual frames once the play begins the players move to the ball.
This Martina Hingis and Venus Williams would beat the current wta top 20 at least 6-1 6-3 with Hingis weak serve and with Venus just spinning in second serves.
I can clearly hear the shuffling of Venus beads. What a shame, tennis changed forever with the Williams sisters, a change i did not like. Gone was grace and timing and placement, on came power, power and more power. I suppose like everything tennis had to evolve. Martine was my favourite because she utilised will and brain power with patience and structured a point to win.
But that change had already taken place on the men’s tour. Guys like Muster, Agassi, Kafelnikov and Sampras were not playing soft either. Surfaces even ended up being slowed down by the early 2000s because of crazy serves and power.
I thought Hingis hit with more power from both sides, in years of 1997, 1998 than later years! Why she hit with less and less power from 1999... ? Bcoz she changed the racquet or she didnt see the coming power tennis age?? She and her mother should have known this, to develop a more strong forehand...
I guess they expected power tennis to remain limited and with high unforced errors (like Pierce in the late 90s). But new racket tech gave more control while preserving power. The most successful players against Hingis (the Williams sisters, Davenport) all managed to overpower Martina and kill her percentage tennis strategy. In fairness, she didn’t lose to many other players in the early 2000s.
I think Venus has made some errors during her whole career. One of these errors is that she keeps hitting the ball back at her opponent. She really should have hired a coach, besides Richard and her hitting partner. Too many short balls. Looks like the strategy was just getting the ball back in court.
rayncar You literally sound so fucking stupid, you take your ass out there and play with Queen V and see if can keep up with her “too many short balls”
@Devon Hawkins-Anderson Her 2nd serve was ridiculously weak. Her point of contact on the forehand was all over the place. Which is why it broke down under pressure. Her service motion all together was very herky jerky even though it was big it wasn't consistent enough of a weapon.
@@anthonyyusef5897 Yup! And it’s surprising how she made that far in her career with so much weaknesses. It was stressful to watch her play tights matches,wow...

Technical player vs power player.... I will take the technical player any day! Loved Hingis back in the day!
well Venus is also technical player but her power feature is more stand-out..
Lou C Hingis is boring asf. Slow ass player
Williams has/had better technik than Hingis!

Seles was actually the first powerplayer who could hit hard off both sides.Graf never hit any winners with her backhand.
Jeffrey Kaufmann and sisters learnt from idolizing Monica!
thats why its so boring..

This was when the French were still a classy, civilised audience. a year later they turned into rabid, foaming at the mouth interveners in the match.
They had always been rude. They booed both Mary Pierce (1996) and Henri Leconte (1988) when they failed to live up to their expectations.
Lmao you can hear Venus' beads
Lol. So that was what does sound was

Please upload Venus vs Jana Novotna Wimbledon Quarter Final also Novotna Hingis Wimbledon Semi Final 1998
Martina excellent opponent to any player
Biy they did not like each other back then..women tennis golden area 1994-2010. I miss those days.
You didn't think that the prestabbing of Seles when she was starting to dominate Graf was part of the golden age?
I'd say golden era ended in 1999 when the Williams sisters began taking over and forever ruined women's tennis
This Martina Hingis and Venus Williams would beat the current wta top 20 at least 6-1 6-3 with Hingis weak serve and with Venus just spinning in second serves.
Hingis didn't have a weak serve, but usually chose to play it safe. But she could crack fast flat aces whenever she wanted to.
MArtina Hingis is so Pretty …. every Victory against the Williams Sisters is such a joy
Living in the pass. SMH
unfortunately she didnt have enough of them and had to retire.
sorry she's weaker than Williams's
