    If you get a chance to go to the Irish ploughing match it is the most mental show you will ever go to imagine putting cereals, a beer festival, the highland show, a beer festival, a wet Glastonbury with more mud in the middle of no where with a Mickey Mouse road system of single track roads and you’ve got half of it. It is brilliant and really good if your stand flooded in the mud and they do they just move your stand mid show. No jobs worth stewards really positive. The lady that runs it and makes the announcements will honestly remind you of an Irish super grannie! You must go if you get chance

    Wild oats always were pulled by hand (rouging) years ago. Despite sprays it was definitely the most effective way of controlling them. Andrew Ward still pulls wild oats by hand when pulling black grass.

    In Norway you are required by law to keep 20 meters next to the bordering field clean of wild oats (we call them flying oats, since the seeds are so light they can be carried a distance by wind). Either by spraying or pulling by hand.
    Thats was "fun" as children running around picking wild oats.

    Occasionally putting coffee grinds in that fridge box over night will absorb the smell.
    Have you tried one of the high level mowing machines that collects the heads of the wild oats into a box that can be emptied into a trailer and carted away for destruction

    very enjoyable video Olly Thank you. Combine looking fantastic, did you ever look into making models of it with all the sign writing on them.
    That barley must be very low on nitrogen content, as the higher the nitrogen the grayer the inside of the barley kernel becomes, In old times the whiskey industry before all the fancy machines to test the nitrogen level in malting barley used to cut the grain in half ,a bit like you just did and see how white it was inside the whiter the better, and more suitable for malting barley and the bigger the premium price, after watching the video feeling 90%, keep up the great work

    Hi Olly, received my hoodie (#146) today. Only a week for delivery... not bad considering it takes two weeks for a letter (express post) to arrive from Melbourne, which is 600km away!! Always watch your blogs when I get home from work and never fast forward through the birthdays. Massive thanks to Ian as well. 80% today due to the 100km/h winds and rain which will continue for the next few days.

    Yes Olly, the machinery looks absolutely brilliant, if only the yields were higher. It must be so frustrating to sit down and work out the true value of the harvested crop / against what it’s actually cost to prepare the ground, purchase and sow the seeds, spraying chemicals as necessary, machinery maintenance / depreciation costs, oil and fuel (adblue etc), labour costs. Do farmers ever actually make any money?? 🤔🧐😟🤔 Thank you for taking the time and trouble to provide us with brilliant quality videos / daily blogs. 👍😊🚜

    I suppose that the old ways if pulling wild oats by hand are no longer being done, it's got to be cheaper on days when nothing can be done on the farm, eventually the wd oats can be eradicated if they are not so prevalent, 60 years ago I remember pulling wild oats by hand with my dad and we did get rid of them after a while,
    Another good film from you Olly, stay healthy and as we say in norfolk 'keep you on a troshin'

    I am following on youtube some US farmers as well. So, one guy said their wild oats got resistant to herbicides and now there is no means to get rid of it on their fields. And your field looks way better compared to theirs, which resembled a stormy sea of wild oats in the winds with, visually, at least 50/50 ratio between the weed and the wheat cultivated.

  • @philipsankey988
    @philipsankey988 17 днів тому

    I assume the SB is a malting variety,white inside gives an indicator with the nitrogen content of the grain,Have to be careful you can take the wild Oats to another field and start spreading them,we had a field once that was covered in them,took several years and spraying to reduce numbers,if you light a match behind a wild oats the the leg will walk the oat from the flame

    Another excellent farm based video
    As a non farmer, it always holds my attention how you unload the combine on the move, I get the combine sets the speed, but the size of modern trailers how do you manage to equally fill the trailer with the limited movement of the spout on some machines, it applies to cutting/collecting silage, those spouts are shorter than your combine
    Great job, great team, great video
    Thanks olly

    • @avafw60
      @avafw60 17 днів тому +3

      It looks more difficult than it actually is. The combine/ forager is the lead, the trailer driver gets it central so the auger is in the middle of the trailer ( different for a forager).
      The tractor driver should firstly put half a tank at the front of the trailer to put some weight on the drawbar/rear wheels to enable better traction.
      Then fill up from the rear while you can see it then head your way to the front of the trailer.
      When foraging your traveling a lot faster, same principle as grain but because you are traveling faster the ground conditions help settle the silage better in the trailer.
      In both operations it ideal if the tractor driver stays in a straight line, both the spout on the combine and the deflectors on a forager are at the flick of a switch if any adjustment is needed...😊
