Bedman in Xrd is a completely unique fighting game character with a setplay mechanic that has literally never been done again since his launch. Bed? in Strive is a version of bedman missing the entire mechanic that gave him his unique identity and playstyle. No, having something you set up on your body doesn't count, Zamasu does that too and so do a ton of NRS characters. Bedman got hit with the Strive treatment: his unique and interesting mechanic got watered down to an incredibly boring one for the sake of not appearing daunting to newer players (or at least, what developers think new players are like). This happened with literally every returning character: Ky doesn't have his gates, Leo is missing a whole stance, Faust is missing pogo and doors (and his swag and entire point), Milia'a disks are now just two versions, Baiken doesn't have her counters, Testament doesn't have their traps, Bridget can only set her yoyo in two places and flip to it, Sin now has boringass rekkas instead of being able to cancel special moves, Bedman's mechanic shouldn't even be called a bootleg of his old one, Johnny doesn't have coins or Bacchus Sigh, Elphelt doesn't have her gun stances and ABA was massacred in a way that I still don't feel right talking about. Strive is a shadow of Guilty Gear and the only reason it wasn't talked about like this is because it was the first mainstream game with rollback.
I got into the series with Strive and I've just been started playing XRD, and I totally get what you're saying. To a certain degree Strive is meant to be "baby's first fighting game", but I don't think that's inherently bad? Fighting games can be hard to get into without prior experience. But Strive kinda helped me get over that, which is why I defend it even if I think XRD (And previous Guilty Gears, besides the first.) on paper has better mechanics. Though with that being said, I think simplicity can be nice sometimes? Sometimes I like having to think less about a character's basics and focus more on improving other elements. Which is why simplicity can be a boon, you can also still have interesting interactions even with simple mechanics. Especially in Strive where every character is usable somehow even if they're low-tier, except poor bursted-on Zato of course. But yeah tldr I think Strive has good elements that aren't for everyone, and I think XRD has good elements that aren't for everyone. I've personally found enjoyment in both but it's totally fine to just like one or the other. Something doesn't have to be inherently good or bad for you to like or dislike it. Also my apologies if this comes off as me keyboard-warrioring Strive, I think it's more than fair to dislike Strive. I just personally have a soft spot for it so I felt like defending it a little. Lol.
As a Bedman player from Xrd I do agree that they literally killed his entire character, but he still is a setplay character. I would like to address this issue but before that lets check the other part of your comment. Ky doesn't need/can't function with his gates. Ky could setup gates in Xrd in hard knockdowns but hard knockdowns in strive is very common so it would have been a broken mechanic. But more importantly charged stun edge ultimately fulfills that functions as there are no complex wakeup options in strive(DAA,Blitz etc) and Charged SE is already super/dp safe. Leo didnt lose any stance. his rekka got removed and his command grab was made exclusive to his stance. Faust has a better door with RC now, THANK GOD THEY REMOVED POGO(Im a bad player so ofc I hate it) Millia I think always had two disks what are you on about? I think you are talking about Garden (again like pogo dont really want to deal with it so am happy). I guess the pin is the one thing that Millia needs, but they gave her Kapel for that reason but the same caveat(1) as Bedman? himself so I will come to it. Baiken by counters I will assume you are talking about Azami. Lets not pretend Azami wasnt a**, her parry not is far better except from a distance. What you are wanting is Suzuran. The forward dashing counter. Let me tell you this suzuran in strive with her dash>j.S as as option would be more annoying than anji's spin and slayer's dandy combined. You would not really ask for this unless you are a Baiken player or you want Baiken to have the same reputation as Happy Chaos, hated by all of the community. I dont think Red wants to have their poster girl hated. Testament.... If you literally touched any FG, ANY FG, with good trap character at the hands of a good player-persona,UNI. I would like to ask you, are you a masochist? Nobody likes trap character, not the player not the opponent. Testament is fine now and there needs to be more options revolving around the succubus though that would fix the issue. Bridget went to a good direction. If you dont know Bridget's yoyo functioned more or less like Ino Note and Lichi pole depending on the options. Exchanging that for strong offence with dp safe setups(1) and getting a dp too. I think the exchange is fair. Sin, Bro he was Braindead even in Xrd. Thats his whole character, his whole playstyle has always been lore accurate to his own IQ, what are you on about? And he still has special cancels, he literally has a bar for it. Bedman? again (1) Was the Jhonny coin mechanic cool? yes. Does it change anything being missing in Strive? No. Coin was mostly used to confirm hits into knockdowns to setup properly which generally wouldnt have led to a setup. This changes nothing now as air recovery doesnt even exist in strive, everything is juggle and everything at least leads to knockdowns, just setup cards. But yes this has made Jhonny braindead, thats not Jhonny's fault that's Strive's fault. Jhonny has always been a niche character used by pros because most of his kit doesnt lead to favourable neutral/knockdown unless you which combos to do or where to use the coins to get to such situations. But Strive inherent mechanics allowed any hit to lead to ground which made no need for any of his conversions. So they gave his a card for Oki(which is a upgrade from his past iterations mind you). This has led to one of the most braindead situations ever where he gets his past pressure to no skill or struggle whatsoever compared to his Xrd iteration. This holds true for all his specials compared to Xrd. Elphelt, she isnt bad, like her skill level really didnt change much compared to Xrd. She became unviable in high level but that needs a whole other discussion. ABA wasnt really massacred, I think this is just the Strive zoomer mentality where they think some character is supposed to be like this but turns out their imagination of the character is far from the truth and they hate it because it turned out different from what they thought it was. She is probably the most 121 recreation of her +R iteration except some air options and downside while having blood bags. The former doesnt matter in strive and the latter is actually a upgrade as in good hands she can constantly maintain jealous without downsides. (1) now addressing the elephant in the room, Bedman? but more importantly safe pressure. Guilty gear and its brother Blazblue is probably the only games where you can play around and force Dp character to never dp in their fking life ever again. From Dp safe pressure to catching bursts, the name of the game is dunking on and the function is mental damage and target is the poor soul on the other side. We may not have corpse killing or Ki charge but what we have isnt what we do after winning the round but what we can do while winning the round. Bedmans rewind mechanic lets you do so many safe pressure for so many options, you name it he has it, dp? yes DAA? yes YRC? yes Blitz? yes. In exchange he has the worst defense in game(trash ahh super and DAA). Millia's pin is again a safe way to bait out anti-airs(the actual function of the dp not the sht ppl use it in strive for) and to start pressure offa fullscreen air2ground, compared to that Kapel and Mirazh can be hunted down. Bridget retains the safe pressure status, so I dont think theres any problem there. Bedman? isnt ruined because he was made into a setplay character but because all of his options can be shutdown with a dp because Arcsys didnt want to make him good. Imagine the Bedinstall status(not the damage and plus effects) of the attacks not disappearing after getting hit. I would fking drop Nago and Slayer right now and pick up bedman? if that happens. Let's be frank here "Strive is a shadow of Guilty Gear and the only reason it wasn't talked about like this is because it was the first mainstream game with rollback." Guilty Gear was always mainstream it just wasnt "mainstream", guilty gear became mainstream because of few reasons, * Anti-airs made to be very easy *Dp and RC combo being the most stupidest sht ever and most character having close to none to do something about it(Thats why most ppl hate slayer his whole build exists to be dp safe and strive cant handle him, like nerf his damage and dont touch his framedata and srive player would still cry about it like Slayer damage wasnt "that" high in Xrd or +R right? lol) *The massive LGBT ideology and community around it, I mean it helps to get new players whether they continue to play it or are tourist are two different things(One of the pioneers of Strive damage bad community cant really have a good opinion about them). Most of the time they think they are saying and being in the same wavelength as Umisho or SQ when they complain about Strive(Most of the time they are absolutely not again tourists not a big surprise). I myself am preplexed of how big this became, fk it comment with a 🤓to break my whole argument.
@@confirmedbachelor4650 I hear what you're saying and I appreciate Strive for getting people like you who have been daunted by Fighting games into the genre, and don't worry, you don't sound like you're keyboard warrioring, this is completely reasonable lol. That being said, I don't subscribe to the belief that something needs to be simple to be easy for new players. I think what it needs to be is Streamlined, and I'll use Street Fighter 6 as an excellent example of this: Street Fighter 6 has something called the Drive system which gives characters a set of universal functions that cost a consistent amount. This lets every character have a base set of things in common that is very easy to learn not because it's simple, but because it's streamlined: with drive meter, you can do EX special moves, do an easier parry like in SF3, do a focus attack like in SF4, do an FADC like in SF4 but WAY WAY easier, or do a reversal like V-Reversal from SF5. The drive system takes all of the mechanics from previous Street Fighter games and consolidates them into an elegant, streamlined system that gives players a ridiculously straightforward way of accessing previously complicated mechanics or mechanics that required a level of practice in previous games that was unreasonable to ask of somebody just getting into the game. I think the Drive System in SF6 is what Fighting games should aspire to have: a system that takes the cool and fun mechanics from previous games and makes them accessible in a way that streamlines how they're used without taking away their usefulness or functionality. The problem that I have with Strive is that Strive DOES take away tools from its returning characters because the game is scared that new players will get intimidated by a lot of mechanics. There may not have been a way to make Bedman's replay mechanic simple, but there was *absolutely* a way to put those tools into the hands of new players through access to excellent teaching resources in game. I have a lot of problems with Strive personally: airdashes having startup is the worst decision I've ever seen and I hope whoever suggested that got fired, the thing they're calling Faust is like a bad creepypasta version of the old character, the way cancelling normals works feels unsatisfying and I never really found a character that felt good in my hands. I can accept these things and just admit that Strive isn't for me. What I *can't* accept is the idea that new players need a game dumbed down because they're not good enough hour 1 of playing for the first time to immediately get every single nuance of the game and so everything that can't be explained in that first hour needs to go so they can reach the skill ceiling faster. Street Fighter 6 put crucial mechanics from its past three predecessors into itself, yet made accessing all of those mechanics ridiculously easy to do. That game trusts its players with the system it has given them and as a result, new players can do more and learn how to deal with situations more easily because the game has an easy-to-access answer for situations they might be frustrated with. I think Strive could have done the same and it's a shame it didn't. Still, I'm glad it got you into fighting games and I hope to see you in one that I do play!
@@ratcatcher2048 It's totally a fair point to say a fighting game doesn't have to be simple to be digestible for new players, I agree full heartedly. What I was trying to say is that I don't think just because a game is simple that makes it inherently bad? But yeah it's super fair to not want to play a game because of that. Also ironically enough I'm a Faust main in Strive and Xrd, haha. He's actually what got me so into the game. I can understand why someone wouldn't love the changes to his character, especially if their introduction to his character was before Strive. I personally love him in both games. In Strive, he's basically a walking corpse (Kinda not really, its implied his soul just dipped after Another Story.) so seeing him try so hard to still be funny is sad but also kinda heartwarming? I feel like his story is about regression and regret, like it's not like he's overly edgy now he's just regressed to a point like how he was during the first game as Dr.Baldhead. It's almost like an allegory for depression in a way? Sorry if I'm looking way too far into this but I dunno, something about regressing to a point you've been at in the past but still trying to move forward is really inspiring to me. His arcade dialogue where he says "I save me, finally found my answer" lives rent free in my head. Though I will say I also love XRD Faust! XRD is a lot more willing to just be fun and silly, while Strive obviously tries to take itself more seriously but I don't think either are bad personally. I love the "Going my Way" thing he says. Also his character is still goofy in both which makes me happy, just in different ways. Sorry for the long rambling speel, I just am obsessed with Faust. Haha. Also yeah, I am getting into other Fighting Game series. I just bought SF6 because it was on sale and I've also been messing with BBCF. Fighting games have just in general been this new thing I've discovered that I really like and I'm just kinda havin fun with em at my own pace. Haha.
@@confirmedbachelor4650 Hell yeah, SF6 and BBCF are sick! Hope you have fun with em! As for the Strive take, I completely agree that a game being simple isn't inherently a bad thing, I just think that the changes that were made between Xrd and Strive didn't sit well with me and because I was still new at fighting games but had some experience, I was in the perfect sourspot of "The changes they made fuck with the little muscle memory I've developed with the games that I've played and it feels like they did that for the sake of making it accessible to me, as if they expected me to not know what I already know and not be able or willing to learn it." I'm probably wrong about the actual developer motivations, but it felt like airdashes were given startup frames to give new players an easier time reacting to them, complex character-unique mechanics were simplified to one or two moves to give new players less to think about with their characters, burst was made harder to punish so new players had an easier get out of jail free card (at least, at the beginning of the game) and the gattling system was EXTREMELY limited to fuck with returning player's muscle memory and handicap them against all the new players. Again, this probably isn't the actual motivation of the developers, but going into Strive with basically all of my newly developed FG skills and habits getting nerfed heavily, this definitely felt like what their motivation was, even if it isn't rational to feel so. LeonMassey's review of Strive did wonders for me in being able to express what about the game felt bad in my hands and even though I start off exaggerating the problems I have with the game, I'm more than willing to be reasonable about my actual criticisms of the game. Even if I don't enjoy the game, I'm glad other people are trying fighting games because of Strive and if nothing else, Strive was an excellent way to set the stage for the future of fighting games in Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8. I don't think those servers would be nearly as full without Strive and I'm super excited to have folks to fight when I lose myself at 3am in Gold 5 lol
I’ve had the discussion of which Wild Assault to give Bedman? before, and I can’t see him with Blue. Yes it would let him get his 2 step setups a bit better, but White already still guard crushes And is invincible,if you gave him blue he’ll literally have 0 ways of dealing with DP and 0 get in options of any kind,it’s also his only way of creating any kind of punish for calling out someone who tries to call out a gap in his pressure. If you remove it for blue he’ll become so much worse imo.
I mained Bedman? since he was released. He was the only character I played for over a year but I never managed to get him to celestial. When ABA was released I played her for two weeks and immediately got to celestial. After that I even did the same with Elphelt. I feel like Bedman? is just weaker than most of the cast. I would love to play him more but there are so many situations in which I simply feel powerless when playing him. Often I know for sure what the opponent is going to do and with ABA and Elphelt I always have a way to punish or prevent it. But with Bedman? I just have to take it or be happy that I can at least reset to neutral. He has so many problems that I'm not even sure one additional special move would fix it.
Bedman? really is a character that either doesn’t belong in strive or just needs such a considerable amount of buffs and rework. His pressure is only good for 4 hits, and 8/10 times as nowadays most people know how to punish it,or never even let him start his pressure, and unlike most characters his own pressure leaves him no room to continue without wasting resources he usually doesn’t get back fast enough. He’s also a big body with rushdown levels of health so he doesn’t even have the HP to risk. The only time he’s in a relatively good position is when he’s installed, the opponent is knocked down,he has enough for an RC,abs he can still WWA.His install also doesn’t provide enough of an atk and def buff nor does it last long enough to feel meaningful or be a good comeback mechanic. Overall he’s still playable but he sucks and suffers against Literally everyone, the only matchups in his favor is ABA when she’s not jealous and Jack-O before her minions are out, other than those be will literally struggle against every other character in the roster with no matchups in his favor, and even the 2 in his favor can still just kill him easily
These thoughts are a tad harsh. His pressure quite workable, it takes only a few videos from competent players to witness its potential, I believe his mix is strangling if errors and air movement/conditioning is used effectively, even if said efficiency is difficult. His HP is above average as well! Effectively the same as Ky's. Install is actually more often a damage cash-out in the corner, you are definitely correct in that it is flawed when it isn't used in favorable context, but all of his highest damage combos are off of install activation with !h stocked and a 5h confirm. The consensus also states that Asuka is a favorable matchup, though with my experience anji is also above average :D I love the little piece of furniture, he is certainly a subpar character in terms of potency, but I believe his mechanics are one of a kind and it would be a shame to have them altered significantly or even outright removed! He's just not for everybody, some would argue that makes him even better!

Faust has a better door with RC now, THANK GOD THEY REMOVED POGO(Im a bad player so ofc I hate it)
Millia I think always had two disks what are you on about?
Bedman? again (1)
Was the Jhonny coin mechanic cool?
Let's be frank here "Strive is a shadow of Guilty Gear and the only reason it wasn't talked about like this is because it was the first mainstream game with rollback." Guilty Gear was always mainstream it just wasnt "mainstream", guilty gear became mainstream because of few reasons,
* Anti-airs made to be very easy
*Dp and RC combo being the most stupidest sht ever and most character having close to none to do something about it(Thats why most ppl hate slayer his whole build exists to be dp safe and strive cant handle him, like nerf his damage and dont touch his framedata and srive player would still cry about it like Slayer damage wasnt "that" high in Xrd or +R right? lol)
*The massive LGBT ideology and community around it, I mean it helps to get new players whether they continue to play it or are tourist are two different things(One of the pioneers of Strive damage bad community cant really have a good opinion about them).
I think what it needs to be is Streamlined, and I'll use Street Fighter 6 as an excellent example of this:
Street Fighter 6 has something called the Drive system which gives characters a set of universal functions that cost a consistent amount.
As for the Strive take, I completely agree that a game being simple isn't inherently a bad thing, I just think that the changes that were made between Xrd and Strive didn't sit well with me and because I was still new at fighting games but had some experience, I was in the perfect sourspot of "The changes they made fuck with the little muscle memory I've developed with the games that I've played and it feels like they did that for the sake of making it accessible to me, as if they expected me to not know what I already know and not be able or willing to learn it."
I'm probably wrong about the actual developer motivations, but it felt like airdashes were given startup frames to give new players an easier time reacting to them, complex character-unique mechanics were simplified to one or two moves to give new players less to think about with their characters, burst was made harder to punish so new players had an easier get out of jail free card (at least, at the beginning of the game) and the gattling system was EXTREMELY limited to fuck with returning player's muscle memory and handicap them against all the new players.
The consensus also states that Asuka is a favorable matchup, though with my experience anji is also above average :D
I love the little piece of furniture, he is certainly a subpar character in terms of potency, but I believe his mechanics are one of a kind and it would be a shame to have them altered significantly or even outright removed! He's just not for everybody, some would argue that makes him even better!
