In this excerpt from the Archive of American Television's interview with Roger Ebert, the film critic discusses his philosophy, his working relationship with longtime colleague and sometime rival Gene Siskel, and the origin of the "Two Thumbs Up/Down" review. The interview was conducted by Gary Rutkowski on November 2, 2005.
Reading or watching Ebert's review of a movie is so often more entertaining than watching the movie itself. The man's writing is so accessible and insightful. Also, he is an indisputable authority on film and pop culture.
Just yesterday (4-3-13) I heard Ebert's cancer was back but he was determined to beat it. I was sad to hear about the cancer but I was hoping for the best. Then today (4-4-13), literally just a few minutes ago, I heard Roger Ebert has passed. So sad.
I was a long time viewer of his show he co-hosted w/ Siskel, then w/ Roeper, & then his show he produced w/ his lovely wife, Chaz, hosted by Lemire & Vishnevetsky. It was great fun & wonderfully insightful.
Mr. Ebert, you will be forever missed.
Roeper very correctly called him: "The Michael Jordan of moviecritics."
Ebert is an extremely thoughtful critic and he is a rare breed, because he has never lost sight of the needs of the audience.
You won't soon be forgotten, Roger Ebert. You brought so much greatness to the film industry. You'll be missed.
How could you call it shallow when he won a Pulitzer prize for criticism? I've read them, and they are in itself great writting which sums up ebert's views about a film. He can sometimes miss the point of a film, but that's rare.
Ebert has always been one of my favorite movie critics.
Like I don't know guys, I think Roger showed that even someone with weight problems like many of us could like get on TV and be a big star, you know. Like he is so way cool. I watch Andy of mayberry too and enjoy all the old shows.

Ebert's reviews have NEVER let me down thus far. He knows just how to look at a film and give an objective critique of it.
This was one of his last interviews before his surgery. You can even see the cancer tumor growing from his left side of his bottom jaw.
A lot of people think movie critics are starting to be out of touch with audiences. After I've started actively looking for movies I would enjoy lately, rather than just seeing what's in theaters, I'm inclined to think Ebert couldn't be more right that critics are important. That and like any celebrity that is actually invested in his followers, he has a nice rapport with his readers on his online journal. How's that for out of touch?

old duffers who can't appreciate why people like watching "protracted sequences of senseless action" shouldn't be reviewing "I Am Number Four" in the first place

We can only thank heavens that this "legend" (ie a flopped porno writer and former drunkard who had a show long ago after midnight telling losers which film to see) is now silent. Was he paid to promote?
Ebert is very shallow. His criticism can be summed up here: I like it; I don't like it. BORING>>>
No legend at all. But a failed sleaze writer turned critic (Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, Vixens)
