Thanks for recommending Landscapes, really loved it!
You look lovely, Mercedes. Colder weather truly does make for better reading days, so cozy. What could be better than sitting by a fire on a cold rainy day with a blanket and hot tea, while getting lost in a chunky long book? I look forward to hearing your thoughts on all of these, particularly Doomsday Book which I have had on my shelves for years.
I did 'the fraud' on audio, Zadie Smith narrates it, she does & amazing job. She sings & does all the accents. Very impressive.
Hi Mercy. Just finishing Fraud and whilst I bought the book, listening to it on audio as Zadie Smith narrates it wonderfully. I’m really liking & I am not the biggest historical fiction fan. Haweswater is spellbinding. Sarah Hall is one of my fav authors - only one book of hers hasn’t worked for me. From your list, Salt & Skin and The North Water are now added to my wish list especially the former - sounds brilliant.
Loved this longer video. Having a weekend of not feeling so well (extreme tiredness) and found this very relaxing. So thank you
The North Water sounds really good, I must get this!
You will love His Bloody Project. Happy reading Mercy
Loved Moon of the Crusted Snow - can’t wait for his new one!!
I loved Moon of the Crusted Snow! His name is pronounced "Waub- bee- shig". He used to be an on-camera journalist so I'm used to hearing it. He also did go by Waub now and then. I'll have to go buy the new one 😊
Falling Angels is a fantastic read.
I read doomsday book and really liked it 😍
I've read a couple of Bernard Cornwell's standalones and I'm currently reading the Saxon series by him. I'm liking him so far.
Hi Mercy! Thanks for introducing me to intriguing new titles as always. I just noticed that your older videos have all been privated. I understand that is your personal decision and that your reading tastes have evolved since then, but as a long-time subscriber, I loved rewatching some of your older videos as a comfort watch because they remind me of how I got into reading (you were the first booktuber I discovered)! Do you think you will ever list those videos again?
Regardless, look forward to continue following your reading journey and get reading inspo from you :)
Hi, sorry for the delayed response! I decided to private them as I feel like I've changed a lot as a reader and reviewer so I no longer felt comfortable with them being public. I can't see myself relisting them but you never know :)
Thank you for the recommendations! I’ve added many to my TBR!!
I loved The House Opposite.
I unhauled the Sadie Jones book without reading, so will be interesting to see if you like it.
The gallows pole is very very grim and dark - again look forward to hearing your thoughts.
Doomsday book is on my audible library - I think it's currently free on audible? Or was, anyway!
Bernard Cornwall - definitely want to read that trilogy too.
The Mercies by Kieran Milwood Hargrave features the Sami people as well x
💕😀xx thanks Mercedes for a fantastic list. I’ve read some and really enjoyed them all and the others sound very good so I have put them on my tbr.lots of love. 🥰
Landscapes sounds very interesting and I’ve added it to my TBR!
Thanks for the recs - even though we are going into summer here i have put some of these books on my radar - and you made me think that maybe it’s the right time of year for a reread of The Offing 😊 ooh and I didn’t know that there was a follow up to Moon of the Crusted Snow, which I loved!
aaah, great news about the new Katherina Vermette - I hope we can get our hands on a copy easily enough! I still need to read The Strangers.
all of these titles sound great, I’m especially keen on Haweswater and Salt & Skin. happy reading! 💖
Hi, I love Autumn and Winter too and they are my favourite reading months, although every month is a reading month. These books sound really good thank you. I read The Outcast by Sadie Jones a few years ago and really enjoyed it. Happy Reading.
Happy cosy season! Also interested in the bew zadie smith too! Siân ❤
I want to read The North Water this winter too. I’m also a little hesitant that it will be too dark, but I’ll give it a go.
I had not heard of Stolen and it sounds excellent and my library has a copy. Thanks for putting it on my radar!
i love the aveline jones series!!
I preordered Moon of the Turning Leaves on audiobook and I am very excited to get to that one next year! I am also super interested in the new Alicia Elliott book you mentioned. It sounds creepy and good 😊
Love this list! So many I’m interested in. I’m shocked you didn’t haven Lauren groffs new book
I just recently bought "The Fraud" and also can't wait to read it! And, I'm so happy too see "Stolen" on your list! I absolutely loved that book (although I'll admit that I'm a bit bias because I love Sámi culture.) If you want to read a historical fiction about Sámi people, I'd recommend "The End of Drum-Time" by Hanna Pylväinen (note: she's not a Sámi author, she's Finnish-American.) Ann-Helén Laestadius has another book that is kind of a prequel to "Stolen" that follows one of the characters from the book, however it's not translated into English yet ):
Hi Mercedes,
I highly recommend a Graphic Novel anthology (featuring several Indigenous Canadian writers) called This place: 150 years retold
Great list, I was really intrigued by Sadie Jones then I read The Snakes which I felt was really poorly written, you’ve made me think about giving her a second shot.
I think you’ll like A Line in the World by Dorthe Nors 🌧️ I’ve been saving Stolen for colder times!
I really enjoyed The Outcast by Sadie Jones and read it with my book group. We all thoroughly enjoyed it at the time. I'm pretty sure it was televised too. I don't think her other work is anywhere near as good, especially The Snakes, which I just wanted to throw across the room as soon as I had finished it! I'm not even going to attempt to read The Fraud as sadly, I just don't get along with Zadie Smith's writing. There are some great-sounding books there. Can't wait to hear your thoughts!
I did not like The North Water I really disliked the cruelty to children. I found no literary value in this book.
