Have 2 Ovations from the 70's. A deep bowl Folklore and a deep bowl Legend. Made in good old USA. Great sounding and playing guitars.
I love my ovation!
you love snow..be safe
@@DavesWorldofFunStuff I do, but it’s melting fast Dave, glad you’re feeling better!!
I have a vintage ovation. It's worth the same few hundred bucks it was in 1970.
I believe Bon Jovi was a big ovation guy.
don't like the guitar but love the t-shirt
Lefty Alert 📢 ☺
I love Ovations! I have a 76 Glenn Campbell signature 6 string & a 77 Pacemaker 12. I’d get more if I could! 👍
Gllen Campbell, Roy Clark, Nancy Wilson, and about a million other players used and liked Ovation Guitars. They were the first acoustic electric that actually worked and they were a tough stage instrument that if destroyed or stolen could be easily replaced.
A carbon fiber Adamas without pickups was an amazing sounding instrument.
I have a carbon fiber Adamas, the Millennium Edition from 2000, of which there are only 75. Definitely my best acoustic.
Yes thank you I just left my list and then I saw your. Awesome! Thank you
These guitars were played by everyone from Glen Campbell to Jim Croce to David Gates of Bread, Melissa Etheridge and Nancy Wilson of Heart. They were also played by greats like Kenny Rogers, Paul McCartney and Neil Diamond. They were quite popular from the mid 70's through the early 90's. I have an earlier Balladeer that I bought new in 1974 and Harry Chapin played it for two nights during a stopover in Germany while playing concerts and military bases for the troops.
Also jazz fusion greats Larry Coryell, Al DiMeola, John McLaughlin, Phillipe Catherine, Pat Martino played Adamas and Ovations in the 70s/80s. The people who knock them don’t understand them and the playability of them.
@@pythonflying , Adrian Legg used to work for, and play Ovation guitars; he modified his with Scruggs-style banjo tuners with preset pitch drop settings, which allowed him to play these as if these were pedal steels. And if you've never heard Adrian play, you really should. His composition "Midwest Sunday" will make your jaw hit the floor, and stay there. Adrian was also the author of one of the very first do-it-yourself books for musicians wanting to modify their guitars, " Customizing your electric guitar".
@@goodun2974 That's right, Steve Morse also. There were so many great players using them. People who say Ovations don't sound good never played their top line like an Adamas, a Legend or even a Balladeer.
@@pythonflying , The unfortunate side effect of having lower line or lower level guitars, perhaps not even being made in the same factory or country, and without the same care taken in design and build quality, and lesser quality control, is that it really pollutes the brand and damages the reputation of upper level, more expensive, higher quality instruments.
@@goodun2974 When Kaman sold the company quality was never the same.
Leave the screw partway in the manhole cover. When it’s partly unscrewed, you can use it as a push button to push the spring away from the inside of the cover. Easy as pie!
I ain't a manhole expect, but thanks
@@DavesWorldofFunStuff You're welcome, was just calling it what you called it.
@@DavesWorldofFunStuff but you're certainly an azzhole. Did you cut and strain your little your arm ? Having hard time managing that guitar ? Try a strap sometime bozo.
@@DavidFell Dave should call it a mini snowshoe 😅
I was going to say the same thing. I bought a similar one and had no problem with the cover and replacing the pickup.
I had a 1982 Ovation Deluxe Balladeer. It was actually a very nice acoustic for gigging.
That was a fun learning experience. I'm glad you mentioned at the end that you can't play the deep back Ovations sitting down. I guess they should have called it a standing Ovation! 😂😂😂
Jim Croce
That double neck one Ritchie Sambora played in Wanted Dead or Alive!
I have ALWAYS hated these. They sound like dogshit and I always think of Melissa Etheridge playing one and she sucks so bad. Lolol
That gasket goes under the preamp - search for "Ovation Receptacle Change" by "MyDusty Guitar" on YT and can see it @2:00 mark
The guitar of the 70’s
Dave the manhole needs a little sand paper to smooth it out a little but you knew that.
A .25 caliber brass gun barrel cleaning brush works well on dirty plugs. Just a couple of in & out strokes (without twisting) does the job. I've found Ovation has great natural sounding pickup systems. A big negative is that it is extremely difficult to do a neck reset.
How I never thought of that I don't know, I literally have my Hoppes bottles and brushes over next to my bass bench...
I remember reading in the seventies a big article ( in a magazine like popular science) about how the plastic body was computer designed for ideal acoustics.
Lyrachord is what they called it.
It does project.
It was designed by Charles Kaman who was an aeronautics engineer. I believe that the material used was similar to the material that is used for rotor blades on helicopters.
Could be, but imagine trying to design a guitar on a 70s computer nowadays!
Make fun of them all you want. Bought my first of five 49 years ago. It plays easier than my Martin D-28. I love them.
John McLaughlin made a really beautiful album called My Goal’s Beyond using an Ovation in 1971. Never played one again.
My understanding is that Ovations were popular in the 70's for stage performance. Their reputation was that they weren't especially great guitars, but projected well because of the domed back and had factory installed pick ups at a reasonable price.
and were FREE for STARS with HITS so people would buy them thinking they are good..like Taylor does today
@@DavesWorldofFunStuff watching your Taylor videos converted me to a Martin fan.
@@DavesWorldofFunStuff I'm a Larriée fan boy. I've only ever come across one Taylor that I liked well enough to think about buying. It was a W10, which is a dreadnaught with a spruce top and walnut back and sides. Most Taylors I've played were too jangley for my taste.
@@DavesWorldofFunStuff Al Di Meola once said - 'its hard to get a good sound from an Ovation as they are made so much out of plastic... sounds like a rubber band " But he kept playing them for many years after making that comment.
Glen Campbell is a wonderful underrated guitar player.
According to UA-cam everyone is underrated. So as it turns out everyone is a lot more amazing than anyone has given everyone credit for, or something. I suppose everyone is underrated. What a wonderful world.
Glen Campbell is fantastic in my insignificant opinion.
@@profile2047 I really don't care too much about what UA-cam thinks, but I guess some do.
@@rickallen6378 But you said he’s underrated. That’s an opinion based on other people’s ratings. And other people are on UA-cam making opinions. So it seems you took other people (and other people including you and I on UA-cam) into account. So it seems you do care? And you and I cared to respond to each other. So it seems we both care.
I think you’re underrated.
@@profile2047 You are correct except for Slash. He is over rated according to youtube gospel.
Glen Campbell was one of the greatest guitar players there ever was. Also, M Sarte needs a nice warm bath. And learn the difference between knowing something and caring about it.
I have four Ovations, a 1984 collectors series, a 25th anniversary, an '85 Balladeer, and an Al DiMeola signature. They all are still in top shape. The older ones were better sounding, to me. They all play great. If you mic'ed and also used an amp you could get great tone with them. Most of the people who knock them online probably never played an older one made by Kaman.
Got to agree there! My Glenn Campbell is 46 years old & in great playable condition. Both that & my 77 12 string still have perfectly flat tops & action too, despite what silly stories I’ve heard! Enjoy! 👍
I have Legends, Balladeers, Elites,& Vipers,6&12'ers.
From '72 to the '90's.
All US made, and are excellent guitars.
(especially my Legend 12'er❤).
I do have a Korean YM68K (mahogany back), and a black tx which I must admit rival the older snowshoes 🥍
But overall, my favorites are the earliest US models I have
aquired. Thanks to Cat Stevens 😺!
Horrible things.....not even firewood....
snow shoes
I've seen a lot worse.
Davey, you are absolutely full of crap! So many top players have Ovations and, when amped, they can sound gorgeous.
Robert Fripp's clinic thing all used them
League of Crafty Guitarists, that's it
6:05 - now I’m wondering…yeah, where did that come from??
Ritchie Samboura plays Ovations as well. Jimmy Page played one during that UnLedded tour he did with Robert Plant in the late ‘90s. It wasn’t just Glenn Campbell
so many sounded like shit..my bad
@@DavesWorldofFunStuff Don’t beat around the bush or anything…
@Billy White Jr. Heart were, er, a bit shit.
I love my four
Stop eating razor blades Dave, then you won't have "Sharp shit"!
i have a 1980 ovation and that man hole cover is a pain in the arse
Maybe Joan Armourplating liked them too
A buddy of mine’s first bass was an Ovation Magnum model. I’m not sure, but I think it was the first generation. He later sold it and bought a Rickenbacker 4001. Clearly he and Dave would not have seen eye to eye on instrument choices.
So, your friend traded an acoustic turd for an electric turd?
“I think I just pulled a muscle tryin’!” Classic
I once played one with a normal sound hole like the one in photos of John Lennon playing it. The one I played belonged to my guitar teacher and I played it at an end of year concert… problem was the volume and tone knobs stuck up and they were notorious for rubbing with your arm until there was no volume from the guitar! I ended up doing a very quiet instrumental of Norwegian Wood on stage!!! I was so impressed with my playing until I found out that no one heard a single note of what I played… didn’t get much audience response… 😂
Richie Sambora Jon Bon Jovi, David Allen Coe, Jonny Depp, River Phoenix, Kevin Cronin Jr (REO Speedwagon) and ME all play Ovation
Dave Mustaine, Melissa Etheridge, Al DiMeola, Brian May, Cat Stevens, Nancy Wilson, Eddie Van Halen, Mark Knopfler, Bob Marley, Paul Simon, Nikki Sixx, and yes Glen Campbell, to name a few.
I own the Melissa Etheridge 12 string and it is wonderful live.
And the Partridge Family. 🙂
Got my first one Yesterday !!!. What a great sounding guitar. VERY happy !!
Nancy Wilson has them. As far as the access port goes get a piece of surgical rubber tubing, make a slice down one side and put it on the edge of the hole. Soft and protective.
I’ve often thought that they’re designed with the shims so that as they age you can pull shims as opposed to doing a neck reset.
When the top caves in,you remove it, and you end up with a large salad bowl with a convenient serving handle…🤣
I had an ovation applause that I picked up 2nd hand for cheap. The fretboard wasn't a wooden board, it was a chunk of milled aluminum where they scooped out the area between the frets and left raised ridges to serve as "frets". It was a piece of junk for normal playing so I raised up the strings at the nut with a Dobro style nut extender and made it into an acoustic lab steel. It actually sounded OK for this but tended to wobble around in the lap because of the bowlshaped body. I started experimenting with tunings and heavy strings and eventually the bridge ripped right off of it.
If you play an Ovation without the manhole cover in the back, the bottom end absolutely disappears from the sound. It’s a fun way to demonstrate the difference between an open or closed-back amp cabinet, the same principles apply.
"patience"
I'm thinking about buying one, but I wonder if the curved back would be a problem. I'm not the thinnest person alive, and I'm afraid it would be constantly slipping and sliding.
A Luthier I met Told Me a 12 String Ovation He had Could Not Be Fixed. I bought it for 20. Thought You Might Get a Laugh and tell Me Good Luck. Poor Neck Top Body at sides design. If I get It Done it Will suck but be the worst break I ever made play again.
Don't leave it where the Bears can get it they would love that to eat their Porridge from .
It's a celebrity and people are like oh it's junk. It's a $300 guitar. Go spend $300 on any guitar and it's going to be bad.
Not winter? When is it not winter in Canada? Eh? I have two Ovations. A six string Celebrity and a 12 string Balladeer. They are good guitars as long as they are plugged in. Acoustically I’m not impressed.
Respectfully...you sound more like you belong on Wayne's World.
Well guitar purest snobs opinions are worthless. The only one that matters is the player and if you like the guitar no matter who made it.
I have the exact model celebrity CS-247 maple top,. cut my wrist adjusting the truss rod with a 2 foot long truss rod wrench I had to buy. I love the epaulets though made of Koa, walnut, and oak.
The blonde gal in the band Heart played one of these for many years.
Ya sure it's NOT a Chovation?
Oh, KOVATION! Better!
JJ Cale also played one
... clean your guitar fretboard.
The grease dirt skin garbage does not give you better tone or make you more attractive
It's gross.
I’ve owned one of those 6 string snow shoes, they suck! I don’t know where it came from , but they were pushed as great guitars in the 70$ and early 80s.
Al di Meola plays ovation guitars only played a couple played nice the problem came when you sit down with them slip about a bit
WTF? My Ovation knockoff has no hole in the back... i got scammed :/
Wow, I had always thought Ovation made good guitars. I never owned one and certainly won't after this verbal trashing.
A luthier who dislikes your brand of guitar cant end well.
Glen Campbell was among the first stars to bring renown to Ovation, but others who played the company's guitars included Paul Simon, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Eddie Van Halen, Alex Lifeson, Neil Diamond, Kenny Rogers, Melissa Etheridge, Roger Waters and David Gilmour. And many more. Cat Steven's, hell I'm 70 and more then likely I've forgotten more then most people will ever know about guitar players. Just sayin
Nancy Wilson (Heart), Bruce Kulick (KISS) and Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora (Bon Jovi) also played Ovation guitars.
@@donosborn9899 Jim Croce America
omg im not laughing at you im laughing with you about that hole cover contraption from heck.
As much time as you spent cleaningh the jack, why not kust replace it
Mellisa ethridge uses Ovation and nancy wilson
I agree Dave: At my age, I can’t remember anyone other then Glen that loved/played/was endorsed by Ovation…wonder what he used in the studio back in his early Wrecking Crew days 🤔🤔🤔
Al DiMeola back then. I'm 67.
@Chuck Quinn. You may already know this. Back in the last century, I remember Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora fronting up the band playing Ovation guitars. I have seen pictures of Richie with a custom built triple neck Ovation - mandolin/12-string/six-string. Then JBJ switched to the Takamine brand saying something like "I needed a change from playing a guitar that sounded like Tupperware!" Don't know if JBJ and Richie were officially Ovation endorsees, but maybe a change is as good as a rest. Stay safe and well.
Marty Balin used Ovation in the Starship.
John Denver was into them for quite a while...
@@richardbaker2613 Starship have their fame: OK, I won't mention _that_ song, but still...
The ovation celebrity series are cheap ovations made in the 90s forward. I have a 73 ovation balledeer electric. My mom got it for my 18th birthday and I still Play it today. Beautiful guitar has truss rod adjustment just like a les Paul. I've never had any problems with it in 50 years of playing. Sounds great plays great. America made them famous in the early to mid 70s in concerts. Yeah so Glenn Campbell. The 70s ones were great guitars and mine still is
they used better plastic?
I had 2. A 6 and a 12str. The shallow bowls were more comfortable to me. I thought they sounded pretty good. Loud voices on them. They did come with pretty high action but that was easily corrected. The 12 I had for thirty years. Never had an issue with it. Guess I was just lucky.
That gasket must have fell off the receptacle...it goes around it...
Probably
Maybe a ring of blue tape around the hole
That skinny arm going in that big black hole scared me, I thought I wasn't on Dave's channel for a minute...
you watch strange shit
nice left handed guitar
The Ovations in later years came with a thin self adhering rubber patch put on the lower cutaway of the "bowl" to keep it from slipping when played in the sitting position.
Ive smashed better guitars than that.
6:33 - I read somewhere that Ovation shipped their gits with a ton of shims under the bridge. Step one in getting an Ovation is removing all of them. Anyway, I have been on the war path in finding ways to tame my Ovation. I hate it, it hates me, but the sound through a PA is quite lovely.
laughing so f**kin hard at the Glenn Campbell remark ...
Dave, I've been watching your videos for almost ten years and I find myself coming back still to this day. There's something soothing about watching you do what you do and you still crack me up with some of the stuff you say. I've learned a lot about fixing guitars from your videos over the years. Thanks for sharing your expertise with people that want to learn. Cheers from Louisiana, 🇺🇸
That is awesome!
Its even left handed
Just replace that trash-jack
just clean it and save a guy money..your call..just dirty but if you want new socks no problem
Snow my idea of a desirable guitar (even though I admire Glan Campbell). Anyway, Dave's singing was rank, and the snowshoe joke was just as crappy. I have to ask myself why I keep coming back here.
ask yerself again
@@DavesWorldofFunStuff I just did. Maybe I'm just grumpy because of temperatures in the high 40s, so I'll come again soon in a better frame of mind, since I've been a fan for many years.
One of the most Romantic Lines in a song , I need you more than want you and I want you for all time . Wichita Lineman . Glen Campbell
Great song ,, written by Jimmy Webb .
The lead singer in my band has one that appears to need a neck reset (neck is straight-ish, relief OK, but high action). Hopefully there is a stack of shims under the saddle like you found. If not, it will be SOP to do the neck reset (out of my league).
Just fire the singer.
I've owned my 1982 Ovation Collectors since 1984. It has given me no issues in all the years I've owned it. NO issues whatsoever with the electronics or anything else, not bad for a Guitar that sits out in all conditions in our desert-like prairie climate. Frankly I'm appalled at the negative comments from a so called luthier regarding these inovative Kaman designed Guitars. It's obvious from the first part of the video that you are not overly familiar with Ovations, and sadly, it shows. I'd never trust you with mine. I do get that Ovations are one of those Guitars you either love, or hate, seems there's no middle ground, but as a Luthier, you should perhaps keep your personal issues to yourself? This is the first time in many years of watching UA-cam that I've ever weighed in with a comment, but your observations are unfounded, offensive, and frankly unfair to the brand.
Like deployed 👍
Bad ground.
My buddy has one of those guitars. Its certainly different
My brothers first guitar was an ovation, such a piece of crap. Now he’s got a top of the range Gibson 😂
That’s funny one pile of crap for another more expensive one.
El Kabong special
Thanks Dave. Entertaining as always. I’ve never had an acoustic guitar of my own. That Ovation has always been weird. The round back, why? Not a fan of batteries in guitar’s. Could they not smooth the access hole? But it’s a lefty, not much choice for those players. Definitely needs a strap to play it. Scratched your arm and pulled a muscle. Sounds like me. 😉✌🏼🍻
Jim, The Ovation was designed with the idea that there was a better way to design a Guitar for maximum sound projection. Hence the rounded body. If you do your homework on Bill Kaman and how the design came about, you will have a better understanding of how innovative the Ovation really is. Unfortuantely many like your self never got past the round back and overlooked a truly well made (in USA) Guitar. Studio, and on Stage performance is unmatched by any accoustic, even those costing many times that of an Ovation.
Snow shoes gets my vote, the only guitar I know of egonomically designed to slide off your lap and after 30 years the top comes away from that rocket nose cone material,P.O.S............................................
Easy to see why this guy lives in the basement,
I fix things in my basement asshat
I have a Celebrity Elite slim line which I paid $25 for off FB marketplace. Great guitar I paid more for the case 😂😂😂
Dang it Dave!! I am subscribed AND have notifications turned on... and STILL had to find this video days late!! I hate the yt algorithms!! 😒
Mine's a Center hole Applause AE128., no man hole cover to remove. The Ovation is what I went after for outdoors play at the parks or beaches of FL, USA. They just are the best bang for the buck really. Mine, a preowned 2011, you just aren't finding the quality & sound/tone for what a pre-owned Ovation price point in a Taylor or Martin, or just about anything else all wood body & bowl.
Looks like a giant bed pan.
There is a story about a certain musician who got caught short backstage and the loo was occupado..... then he saw the Ovation in the dressing room of the folk act coming on next.....
I'd certainly poop in it.
So does your face
I can't believe there are any of these left. They were a big deal, until they weren't, for the reasons Dave points out.
😁
I put skate board tape on mine to keep it from sliding off my thigh..now all my pants are scuffed up on the right thigh area!
I have an Ovation Balladeer Glenn Campbell model that I got in 1975. Still works great, nice, bright sound, louder than other instruments of its size. Gold plated Grover tuning machines, spruce top. It will slip off your leg sitting down, so I use a strap both standing and sitting. It had no electronics but I installed a passive piezoelectric pickup under the saddle. The neck is glued in rather than bolted, so it’s nearly impossible to work on it. But it’s still perfect, so I guess it’s not a problem. Martins are also glued as are Gibson acoustics. Glenn Campbell wasn’t the only celebrity to use one. I have seen Paul Simon, Jim Croce, Dewey Bunnell, and Kenny Loggins with Ovations. It was very expensive in 1973, about $500. My new Chevy cost about $3500 then. A car like that one would cost 8 times that amount now. So, using that math, the price of the ovation would be $4,000. It was made in The United States then. When Charles Kaman sold out to Fender, they moved production to Asia and started building lower quality guitars there. It’s a very interesting story. Kaman owned a helicopter factory and used the patented carbon/glass fiber material for rotors. It’s not really “plastic” at all.
I got it used for less. It came in a molded hard shell case that was nearly indestructible.
Other Ovation players that come to mind.....Nancy Wilson of Heart, Melissa Etheridge, Joan Armatrading (signature model)
A lot of younger techs and players rag on Ovations and other Kaman products because they are hard to work on. But in 1973, Ovation was state of the art. I wish they would have been taken over by Taylor and fitted with a bolt on neck.
Interesting comment, cheers.
@@markmiwurdz202 , also, Adrian Legg. And everyone here is going, who? Phenomenal acoustic-electric guitarist and finger picker, also the author of one of the 1st books for musicians who wanted to customize and modify their own guitars. Some years back Adrian was the opening act for several G3 tours with Satriani and Vai. He also worked for Ovation for a while and he outfitted his own guitars with Scruggs style banjo tuners so that he could change the pitch of the strings on the fly as he played, making the thing sound like a pedal steel guitar. I don't think hes playing the Ovations any longer and now uses some kind of custom built acoustic electric that he probably built himself. Check out the Premier Guitar rig rundown with him on UA-cam. I'll find a link to him playing an Ovation and drop it in here.

I don't know if you have Dave but if not you should do a video on strings. Some guy tried to tell me they were all made in one place and there is no difference. Hmm?
I have four ovations and I absolutely love them. I have three multi holes including a 12string and one six string round hole.
