Gary Gallagher is a national treasure. He was kind enough to respond to a fan email I sent him a couple of years ago.

My favorite professor at UVA, of course in spite of the 8am wake ups. But we had to earn that right to be in his class. Had enough credits to double major in History and I'll always regret I never did. This man docked me a letter grade (B- sadly) for handing in my 15 page final a day late because I had marked down the due date a day late in my calendar given the fact I had 4 finals clustered around its due date and the day prior. The discussion with him when I went in to discuss it with him, the actual words he chose, and his sticking to it have always resonated. Now, about a decade later, exactly what he said was accurate, and I am forever thankful for his presence and that simple 10 minute moment.

I'm curious what he had to say.. but perhaps it's too private,
