Well I agree with some of the comments below. You can do this the hard way, or the easy way.
The hard and time consuming way is printing out to paper, cutting them out, drawing round them onto the steel plate, Cutting them out from the steel plate (Jigsaw and metal blade much more accurate than a plasma cutter!) Then prepping them up for welding.
Easy way, just get them cut somewhere with the correct equipment and get it in 1mm or 1.5 mm Stainless like Josh has in the video.
That's what I'll be doing next time!
I've got the neck and part of the head done. Will start on the eye sockets and eyes next weekend.
Josh does make it look easy, but he's a blacksmith, it's what he does.
I'm a Chartered Mech Engineer, but served an apprenticeship years ago as pipefitter-welder. Keeping everything neat and clean and consistent gaps is proving difficult, and if you get one bit slightly out then the error compounds with each new bit you add. And as you add more bits, your ability to move things around reduces as the whole thing stiffens up.
I'll get there, but I'm going to have to modify some of the pieces to make them fit.......

Heating the plate at the right places will help you to form the shapes more easily, less fighting of compounded shapes, lots of clamps and heavy steel wire to wrap and twist like a tourniquet to pull things together. You can tack the heavy wire into position too, then remove it.
A lot of time into these projects, most people dont realise and appreciate just how many hours you have put into this. An awesome build tutorial, great detailed information.

Really awesome stuff. The new videos you are coming out with sound great. Especially the plasma table I've been wanting one for quite some time. when you were talking about the die grinder I was just waiting for the moment that you brought up the splinters because I used to port and polish cylinder heads and they were always just cast iron or aluminum and so we always used the carbide Burr for roughing and cartridge rolls for final polish even though it was not polished to a mirror finish because of the way d rougher texture wood facilitate the mixing of air and fuel and the actual flow the more polished the more resistance you would actually encounter and semi rough finish would create a better turbulent flow of course there's always mirror polish that can be done on the exhaust valve chambers of cylinder heads but that's another topic for another time aluminum is soft enough to not be an issue with the chips that you end up with and of course cast-iron produces such small particles it's like a fine powder but as you know and as you mentioned using carbide Burrs on Steel is pretty much complete misery I was hoping that you would give a little Pro tip about the dangers and the precautions necessary for using a carbide Burr on Steel because you don't expect it if all you've ever done is cast iron and aluminum and then when you do steel it's brutal I actually had to get a die grinder for my home shop and I managed to find the exact same one that I used back at the shop. a Bosch that I happen to find a great on. it was like brand new and it's a $500 die grinder new I got it for 80 bucks so I was extremely happy with that one have you ever tried using a router speed controller 2 be able to do more finesse work and having more control with it I found that it's extremely helpful in fact for the Bosch it's absolutely necessary because it's got so much power it just wants to basically spin your Burr right out of the chuck it because it spins so fast .a video I would love to see you make is on your approach and procedure to actually designing one of these sculptures from scratch. once you have an idea of whatever it is that you want to make how do you actually extrapolate that into these plans? do you just start off with an image of an animal's head and then try to break it down in each different shape and then flatten every single component and then once it's been cut out you Hammer to shape and weld it? One thing's for sure I hope you keep making videos and I hope that people start to realize the value in them they really are great and I'm always rooting for you I love to see a down-to-earth family man who's trying to make his way in the world and provide for his family do what he loves and not be a slave to corporate overlords I'll never forget how inspiring the last video of your stag bookends was watching the end especially when everything was bent into its final position and it all came to life and made complete sense I really really enjoyed that video and have been a fan ever since so I love seeing you forge a life worth living thank you just don't stop you will make it I can see it one last thing perhaps you can think of a video to do that is blacksmithing hacks for making Cooling and especially Tom for instance the Nippers that have the really long handles Canby very easily adapted and converted into blacksmithing tongs I would love to see that

Thank you so much Simon. Dragon is on the table. My plasma costs me £235 and can cut 20mm thick steel, non-HF pilot arc is the only type which will work as a CNC plasma. All the very best. Cheers J

Forging sculptures is a little bit like that because I can't guarantee I can sell it after I make it. Last time my forged sculptures didn't sell fast enough and I ran out of money to feed the family. Which is why I only do commissioned forge work and nothing fun for myself these days. Cheers J

I’m making this for fabrication class and I can’t tell you how frustrated I am with this. I don’t think it’s the designs fault at all, I think it’s my lack of experience. I don’t have a CNC machine, so I spend the around 12 hours lining up the papers, cutting them out, tracing metal, and then cutting it out by hand with a plasma cutter. I then spent around another 12 hours grinding, shaping, and grinding off the grey scale of the metal, I’m now on to tacking it together at the part of adding piece B, which is around 7:20 in the video. Getting to this point I have already ran into plenty of issues, which has taken around 4 hours to get situated and I still haven’t. I am frustrated because I have one more class period left and before the end of the semester and I feel I won’t even get it tacked let alone welded. Again nothing wrong with the design, I just am upset that I didn’t choose something easier.

Hi Joshua, super great video. I am only half way but you make it "look" so simple. (I assume it is not). When you see the sculpture at the beginning, you think...how am I going to make this? Hello. What sort of anvil would you recommend for a beginner with stuff like this? Probably thinking second hand off eBay or would you say new is better?
Hi. I didn't use my anvil at all for this project. I did do a bit With my vice though. I have a what's known as a blacksmiths leg vice which is designed to be hammered upon. As far as Anvils go in general if you can get a Large Anvil second hand for a good price they will always retain their value. Otherwise if you can weld I recommend getting hold of scrap fork truck tines to build one out of because they are high carbon steel perfect as an anvil. Cheers J

welding such a sculpture with stick is quite a challenge
I use 1.6mm 6013 electrodes when I do. They are designed for sheet metal work. I'll definitely do a video on it as most people can get access to cheap stick welder. Cheers J
What software do you use to make flat profiles from the curved faces? Love your art and skills.

Can you do this with 0.30 fluxcore wire welder??
It's worth doing a test piece first but sure if you're skilled enough. Cheers J
How much sheet metal does this require? Not that my welding is anywhere near the standard required.
Thank you Mark. One standard sheet of 1mx2mx1.5mm would be plenty with room for spares. My next sculpture the long horn steer will be tacked only with a gap so light/fire can be seen glowing inside. All the very best. Cheers J
Out of curiosity. What CAD program are you using for designing the stuff? Apparently it has very good flat pattern features.

@@joshuadelisle 1.5mm Ok... Could make the base thicker (2 or 3) so that it doesn't wrap that much... Do you know how many 2000*1000 sheets it takes for the whole head?
I didn't know that you could do things like that with SketchUp (I tried it at the very beginning...) The unwrapping is also made in SketchUp? I discovered Pepakura not so long ago, I think that it only works with triangular faces but we could smooth the edges afterwards...
@@ocAToccd should get a whole head with some to spare from a full sheet but depends on how it's nested. Cheers J

@@ocAToccd I can confirm that on a sheet that is 1m X 2m you'll have a 1/4 of the sheet spare. You can get 2 sets out of a 1.5m x 2.5m sheet. I nested it roughly by hand to see. Cheers J

hey there . my name is Junior . I am a second year boilermaker student at Northlink College . Im interested in one of your templates . but my problem is purchasing templates due to financial problems with my father being unsupportive of my career as well as of me . which puts my mother in a tough position taking out personal loans each year for my studies . I applied for a competition where all my studies can be paid for which is amazing . With the skills, talent and academic performance i have , i qualified for this challenge. I am an artist myself and i would love to work on CAD but without my own PC , there are difficulties . There are computers on campus , but they dont let us do our own custom designs and print them out so we can fabricate them . I would honestly appreciate some feedback from you . cause im ready , this is my passion , honestly just unfair situations that put me in this position .
Thank you Junior. I also started out with nothing, no father and my mother barely had enough money to survive let alone anything else. Boiler maker trade is a great start, I helped a contract industrial gas pipe engineer for a while and was amazed how much money they make. For some reason I decided to focus more on art which doesn't pay much at all. Most of my kit I've purchased second hand or was being thrown away and I've fixed it up myself. My advice is to volunteer or help out a contractor professional in your spare time. Say you want to watch and learn and you're prepared to work hard in whatever way to be useful. The best opportunities come from knowing the right people and from them knowing that you work hard and are teachable. Contractors earn more money and are more willing to help than a corporate company. This has been my experience.
