My assessment: If you are a Canon shooter, there is no reason for you to buy the Sigma. Both lenses are so similar it's uncanny. Save your money and buy the Canon 135 f/2. If you are a Nikon shooter, you have no choice but this lens. But damn, the 135 f/1.8 is one hell of a fine lens. Oh, and great video. The two photographers did a great job, and the lighting was fantastic. Note: I am shooting Nikon, and the Canon 135 f/2 was one of the biggest reasons I wanted to switch back to Canon. With this video and the release of the Sigma 135 f/1.8, I'm feeling less inclined to switch back.
i DISAGREE. the sigma is newer and sharper. I own a 5dsr and I know that older lens arent that sharp on a 50mp camera. The sigma is more future proof for cameras with higher megapixels. My next lens might be the sigma since i never had a 135.
If both of these lenses are getting similar results with today's high end cameras, there is no point in a Canon shooter ponying up the extra hundreds of dollars to buy the Sigma. Canon's 135 f/2 is renown and, unless you are sporting a Canon 1DX mk II or some megapixel monster like the 5DS (like you are), there is no reason for the average Canon shooter to buy the Sigma. It is costlier and produces similar results to the Canon.
That's a tough choice bro. I have the Canon and it's probably my favorite portrait lens in my bag. They're really close in terms of performance, but the really impressive thing is the canon is 23 years old... it came out in '96! So obviously way ahead of it's time if it's still keeping up with the newest counterpart.
And the tad softer look is actually better for portraits, since they never get rid of that look in Hollywood. They want their actors to look fabulous every time. Canon understands that very well.
I have a question, being new to this, how can you tell the real difference if the photos are edited? Are the photos on here untouched or retouched? If retouched, then isn't it more of which person is better at that?
Sigma is 20 or so years newer, so it's no surprise that it looks better. What I cannot believe is that the Canon combo delivers so bad greenish colours, especially since skin tones were always a Canon advantage. I agree with the others, same camera and same editing (if any) would make for a better comparison. Plus, some 1:1 crops of each photo comparison. Thanks for the video.
LMAO how can you tell looking at edited images? Funny how you didn't notice the girl suddenly had a heavy sun tan in the Nikon photos which she certainly didn't have in the video footage. You might want to calibrate your monitor.
@@cooloox both my monitors are well-calibrated, thanks. What you called "heavy sun tan" is what I called greenish hue of skin tones. But hey, you also said LMAO so you've got me there.
My personal preference is the Canon. Less saturated, less warm and softer. However, each of the pictures can be adjusted in post to look like it was taken with the other brand.
I don't want to take away form the purpose and effort of this video... however, if you had used the same camera and same post-process; then we could see a closer comparison. obviously looking at the raw files on a large screen would be better than a compressed video. Either way, thank you for the video.
OMGGG IM IN LOVE ThiS Video was really helpful... Both lens are the same uqality but i think the Sigma looks more sharper and better? Does a Sigma len fit for a Canon 80D camera?
Interesting video... Another concept that photographers could gain from this video is that when shooting a curvy female, shooting with a longer focal length from a distance is often a LOT more flattering than shooting the curvy lady from up closer with a wider focal length lens. Shooting a curvy gal with a 50mm or wider lens from up close with the camera about chest level, accentuates the bust and makes the waist seem heavier while making the head and legs seem smaller...
Canon 135mm F/2L is my favorite. I own that lens. The bokeh this lens produces is compared to the Canon 85mm 1.2L ( I own both Canon lenses ) Also the 135mm is crazy sharp!
good man... you know us Sony shooters love to tease you old skool canon & Nikon users ... glad to see youre in the 21st century .. keep up the great work.. your videos are great & always a pleasure to watch
They both look really good and its really hard to see a real difference. But I will say on the Nikon edits the Sigma seemed to have a bit more contrast and color saturation. Also, the Sigma seemed a smidge sharper. But it's negligible. Either way great video.
Canon L lenses have more natural colours range than the art series lenses but the art lenses are sharper. Interesting that the Canon has 10 elements but the Sigma has 13. Could be why the sigma is sharper but has slightly lower colour range.
Man every video you do like this, the results just blow me away! What incredible mastery on off camera flash. Bravo! I need to up my skills to at least halfway your level.
Naw...Nikon 105mm DC F2...Pondering on getting me a Sony mirrorless camera, but I want to see if Nikon is going to move in that direction of EVF & body stabilization.
Hello Keydrin Franklin all good ?! My name is Ruansley and I'm Brazilian. You could take me a doubt I accompany your work here on your channel very much, and very fantistic. I would like to know which flash you are using in your external tests ??? I'm so crazy about picking up the sigma 135mm f1.8 .... thank you so much already.
Some 1:1 crops to show the sharpness detail would have been useful. Maybe both could have been used on a Canon for consistency also. Just some suggestions.
I have yet to find a Sigma Art lens that didn't meet or exceed its Canon or Nikon equivalent. I have their 35, 50, and 85mm Art lenses and after a quick adjustment with the Sigma Dock, they quickly became my favorite lenses to shoot with. From looking at these photos, I would say they have met the same standard as they have been with their Art line up.
I cant see any significant difference, I wish you examined these lenses on canon 5dsr and nikon d810 or sony a7r2 (with adapter), I believe you cant find much difference in 20 megapixel cameras! sigam should be sharper in high megapixel cameras.
Would you please teach focus and recompose at f1.8, No matter what I can't focus the eye. I have checked the focus on still and it is fine so no fine tuning required. I am using this on NIkon D750, would you please help?
Getting this 1.8 tomorrow. It was nice to watch this video tonight to remind myself what I'm getting into. I've been doing my portraits with my 24-70 2.8 v2 for years now so this will definitely add a different style to my gallery. Thx for the Videos Keydrin!
There is more saturation in the Nikon set up and also more light transmission, the bokeh is hard to discern, which brings us to the part that sigma asking $1400. is too much.If a native lens costs $400 less than the third party then that lens better be better in all fronts, not in this case for me.Canon or Nikon equivalent will surely have a more reliable autofocus and quality control. All in all interesting video as always. Keep it coming bro.
You have to be kidding. There are professional controlled tests (unlike this) that show the Sigma at 1.8 is sharper on the EDGES than the Canon is on the center ats is PEAK aperture. Bokeh is smoother and CA control is fantastic. The Sigma absolutely blows it away. But that is not hard since even the Samyang 135mm F2 did that too. The canon is outdated and needs a refresh soon!
Saying the Nikon setup (I assume that you are referring to the 135 f/2D) has more saturation is like saying the Angry Photographer has the best photographic masterpiece on his Flickr page.
Michael Bennett I was putting the gear in our wagon link is in the description, as far as the C-Stand it's a Kupo and here's that link for you: amzn.to/2paUID4
If I have to chose between the Sigma and the Canon... I'll take the model! The SIgma looked better though, been considering to add this lens to my gear.
great video keydrin, it looks like the images were processed, were they both processed from you or were your images by you and the big guy's images by him? that guy is pretty tall
the skintones on the nikon looked way better than the canon in your video. With that said I normally prefer Canon's SOOC skintones more. thanks for sharing! love the video!
It was like a toe to toe Boxing match to the fans amazement it turned out to be a draw. They both do excellent work. Keep the videos coming. The display of dancing that Gab put's on every shoot is priceless. Great work..
Amazing video as always man! The Sigma definitely looks quite a bit more contrasty. Although the images have been post processed, I have the same experience with my 35 Art. I was worried, that the bokeh of the Sigma would be harsh, but it's really comparable to the Canon.
My brother love your videos and i love what you are doing but to be fair and to have a fair test should have been two canon bodies same make with those lenses. Thanks for all that you do!
Have a challenging natural light setup or not enough light scenario and crop 100% on the eyes. Under perfect lighting conditions one can take comparable image through the beer bottle glass.
Wassup Chirag, What I notice about Photograph at times, the lighter the pics magazine people LOVE! I prefer my pics to be RICH with color. Both pics were very nice to me, but I really believe the lighter pic would be the pic of choice. Plus it comes down to the color complexion.
Did both set of pictures get the same post processing done by the same person? I'm willing to bet that they can both be done to get the same look (amount of contrast and saturation), but Keydrin likes the more saturated look and the other guy likes a more airy bright look, as is the case with me and my shooting buddy. We can shoot the same model simultaneously but our pictures look totally different because of the look we like to get out of our post processing.
Photography in Development I did all of the processing for all the images. I tried to get them similar. I probably should have spent a little more time on them.
It’s notning about lenses . Anyway all photos is after some retouching. But colours I prefer from canon. Nobody can beat canon for amazing skin tones. I’m telling this from my experience. Love my 135 f2.
Back in the late 80’s early 90’s I gotten a Sigma lens to put on a Canon 10s. My best work came from that combo. Don’t recall the lens specifics. Work was done on B&W film and and printed in my own darkroom. Did no pushing or any filters, just straight up shot on the camera and standard processing and simple darkroom printing. I now have a 20mm Sigma Art on my Canon DSR. Let’s see what happens. I still shoot a majority of my work on film. I’m just a hobbiest. My niece is the pro
Wanted to like the video but seeing small shots of both really doesn't help. Want to see zoomed in and which has better sharpness, AF, etc. Also, looks like you showed photos already processed. (or were the SOOC?)
Mike Zupancic you can find those images on my Facebook page or Instagram. In reality the process image to me is the most important because that’s what i would display anyways. The video was just supposed to be about the out of focus area.
Amazing bro, it wouldnt be anything without Gabby, looks like we all love her, I think the Sigma wins defo. Need to see something before I buy this lens, amazing again, Thanks ( Henry )
The bokeh on both lenses are pretty much identical. They seem to be equally sharp, although the Sigma has a bit more contrast and warmer colors (an easy adjustment in PhotoShop would put both lenses on par). The Canon has superior lens flare control which is a major advantage, as this is much more difficult to correct in post. As I remember, the Canon is a pretty heavy lens. Not sure about the weight on the Sigma. All in all, the 2 lenses are very similar. The advantage goes to Canon for lens flare control and price on the used market is about half that of the Sigma. Had Sigma added Stabilization, that would have given them the edge, but I was really expecting a bigger leap ahead of the 25 year old Canon.
Its not fair comparition, its not only about the background when you shoot on different cameras with different settings, and edit photos diferently. Thats just what looks better on photos now, not about bokeh. You should test both lens on same camera taking care that picture is same on histagram. So you camt make iso 50 and f2.0 on 1/2000 amd expect to be the same values on other camera with iso 80, f1.8 amd same shutter speed. Canon camera had always darker image. Bit i agree i like more nikon and sigma combo.
b2unoo7 for this tutorial it was all about the background and I’m sure there are other people out there with all the technical reviews. But i really appreciate your comments as you are correct.
First, VERY nice video and on a subject I think many are considering since the sudden interest in the 135mm focal length! Why I have been subscribed to you for a while now, you are kicking it. I agree exactly with Okwy Ugonweze, I think most of the (extremely small) difference is the cameras and editing, etc. Taking into consideration the extreme age of the Canon design it provides such a similar result that only pixel peepers would notice the difference. And add on $400 cheaper along with native autofocus, absolutely keeping my Canon 135mm f/2L. THANK YOU again, as your test confirmed my initial beliefs, the Canon is still a keeper. Keep up the good work and videos!
I just wanna to say, these two lens have no loser. f1.8 or f2 have not big differnece. The model in the video so so so nice..great video bro, waiting for your next work.
The more I watch the more fly I realize Gabby is... The Sigma has more saturation and the bokeh looks better.. Excellent video btw.. Love the standoff in the beginning.
i like the color of the canon lens better..in the picture where she is holding on to the vine the sigma is making the tree trunks and brush stems purple.. in the canon shot the tree trunks and brush stems are more true to color..other than that they both look great..so i dont think the sigma is worth the extra cash.
wait how was it darker if you could stop the 1.8 to F2? shouldn't it be the same if yall both have the same shutter and iso and same light source hitting the model? i'm honestly curious cause i dont understand.
Kishawn Gilliam not sure but all of his images were coming out darker than mine. Not sure that would be a question I'd ask him. I was saying the same thing.
Was nice to watch this video, you guys seemed to have a lot of fun and the model knows what she's doing ;). Both great lenses really. Seems like the Nikon pics are a bit reddish compared to the Canon ones, maybe due to the PT afterwards (or WB difference). Even if I'm a Canon shooter, it always seems the Nikon has a slightly better dynamic range
It’s funny how everyone who owned the 135mm kept saying it’s the sharpest lens ever. And now, they are like, oh a softer look the 135 gives is more pleasing 😂 too much sharpness is a bad thing. 😂
darius richards by using HSS High Speed Sync. Which means the flash is pulsing or flashing really fast covering the frame before the second curtain closes. That's the simples answer I can give 😊
The side by side shots at 3:18 look different. The Canon lens looks like like it made the model larger (filling the frame wise) and the Nikon with the Sigma looks overall warmer, which is uncommon for a Nikon to look warmer than a Canon. I personally like the Nikon/Sigma pairing a tad better :-)
I find that either lens is excellent. I have the Canon 135 f / 2. And sometimes I do not have the best approach because I do not have many points to focus on my 6D, but that's a camera issue. Thanks for this! Greetings from Uruguay!
Did you use Custom White balance? The Canon looks greener than I'd prefer. (I assume you use Lightroom, in which case I find that the most accurate color profile in Lightroom is with the Canon cameras is camera faithful )

Would have made sense to use the same camera.
for sure, I cannot take this comparison seriously.
I second this.
also same framing for proper comparison of the background
My thoughts exactly
That's looking at the cup as half-empty, boys. Just have fun and realize that YOU didn't even do a video.
My assessment:

Couldn't tell enough to say "KILLED IT"

Brandon Cole Photography you're exactly right! If you shoot raw and post process you want tell a difference
Come on down to VA Beach and let's shoot at the beach son!
Brandon Cole Photography hopefully one day 😎
Nice shootout, there is no big difference here in both lenses is it that am not seeing well?
sunny kiri thank you! Yeah I feel the same it is a slight difference but not much
Definitely a noticeable difference on the body shots. The lighting is phenomenal, should do a video about your lighting setup for this type of shoot

The Canon lens didn't have image stabilization. Did the Sigma? Could make a difference in sharpness.
Welton Corey Sr neither did

Nhan Nguyen I can understand that! It's fine in good light! I've run into a few instances that it hunts in low light
They both look great. I just recently purchased the 135L and I haven't been disappointed yet. Awesome vid man.
Howard Pritchett thanks so much! Yeah, that's what I said when I saw his images
Great Video Guys! Makes me wanna get a D810 and Sigma 135 1.8 Art!

wow... imagine the new d850 ISO 50 with sigma 135 gives you medium format quality
why different cameras though. I hate when peopel do comparisons with multiple different variables. only one variable needs to be different. THE LENS!
RayValdezPhotography because we were on one of my workshops. This is the lens he had and I own the Sigma. This is the reason.
The next lens I will buy is the sigma. This video makes me want it so much.
Great shots. But Canon 135mm f2 L was built in 1996. 21 years old.
Thanks,
Some 1:1 crops to show the sharpness detail would have been useful. Maybe both could have been used on a Canon for consistency also. Just some suggestions.
PKmode I'll definitely do that next time
5 years after to see this video, today I bought my 135mm 1.8 Sigma for Nikon 😁

Franky Vee thank you! Definitely the Sigma for Nikon cameras

Thanks, will be waiting
It is a tie...both were equally great. The difference were just on image color tones.
Anthony Morales 😊
Am just here for the model.
Jpk Channel 😂😂😂
Keydrin Franklin lmao your work is dope though. Could you do more on hss please especially on the cheap side.
Jpk Channel yes ...I sware she is the most cutest thing...but I also like how he made this photo shoot epic
I love her cute dance she always does she has to do it every video now
Jpk Channel haha thank you! I try to keep it interesting
That was awesome. At this level of equipment, it's the user of the tools.
WooKongNinja thank you so much
Great video! Both lenses looked incredible to me and the video was really entertaining! Subbed!
Ben There Media thanks so much! 💯😊
Great stuff Keydrin..terrific shoot! I liked the Sigma best , pre ordered mine yesterday...not released here in New Zealand yet. can't wait! ))

Hello which one should I buy Sigma 135mm 1.8 art - canon 135mm f2 - Tamron 70 200 2.8 sp vc
Is the sigma a zoom lens?

Tyrone Marquez haha! Thank you! I told her she has to continue to dance haha
Amazing video as always man! The Sigma definitely looks quite a bit more contrasty. Although the images have been post processed, I have the same experience with my 35 Art.
I was worried, that the bokeh of the Sigma would be harsh, but it's really comparable to the Canon.
EDC Gadgets thank you! Yeah, I edited and toned but didn't touch the backgrounds 😎
My brother love your videos and i love what you are doing but to be fair and to have a fair test should have been two canon bodies same make with those lenses.
Thanks for all that you do!
Karl Mullings thank you!
The Sigma/Nikon pair looked sharper by a good amount over the Canon pair. Then there's Gaby, mo words are needed.
Wes Weston haha
Have a challenging natural light setup or not enough light scenario and crop 100% on the eyes. Under perfect lighting conditions one can take comparable image through the beer bottle glass.
The Nikon color was richer, but the Canon would be the pic they would choose to put into a magazine. I like both, and I shoot Nikon
Detroit Don 😎
Detroit Don, why do you say that ? . . . (despite nikon color being richer, canon would be selected for the magazine) !
i shoot Canon 6D
Thanks.
Wassup Chirag, What I notice about Photograph at times, the lighter the pics magazine people LOVE! I prefer my pics to be RICH with color. Both pics were very nice to me, but I really believe the lighter pic would be the pic of choice. Plus it comes down to the color complexion.
Thanks for the accurate reply.
Good stuff bro! Both are good, hard choice..
Mike guitar thank you! I bet! For Nikon users it's a no brainer the Sigma. For Canon or Sony users maybe a little more difficult decision
Thank you for taking the time to do this. Really appreciated. I thought one of the Sigma photos looked sharper.
victor tomasicchio you’re very welcome
It’s notning about lenses . Anyway all photos is after some retouching. But colours I prefer from canon. Nobody can beat canon for amazing skin tones. I’m telling this from my experience. Love my 135 f2.
FACTS
Thank you for the video. It's just a pity that the shots were taken with different cameras; so they are not really comparable...
which one would you recommend for Sony?
One Camera One Lens Sigma
Back in the late 80’s early 90’s I gotten a Sigma lens to put on a Canon 10s. My best work came from that combo. Don’t recall the lens specifics. Work was done on B&W film and and printed in my own darkroom. Did no pushing or any filters, just straight up shot on the camera and standard processing and simple darkroom printing. I now have a 20mm Sigma Art on my Canon DSR. Let’s see what happens. I still shoot a majority of my work on film. I’m just a hobbiest. My niece is the pro
if you compared the lens why used differents cameras, diff ISO diff body position etc...
Ha! Loved the intro :) Damn it was close but I have to say overall I liked the D4 & Sigma combo!
Mark R haha thank you! Agreed
SO nice to see us lighting amidst daylight! Great effects are possible with that!
sorry for the comparison, you use one is Nikon and the other one is Canon how to apple to apple?
How far are you standing from beautiful model?
K a i c k y _ which part?
Second outfit ;) street in the jungle
K a i c k y _ about 30-40 ft
cool, how you focusing? single point on eye when you stand far ?
K a i c k y _ single point focusing and recompose
Wanted to like the video but seeing small shots of both really doesn't help. Want to see zoomed in and which has better sharpness, AF, etc. Also, looks like you showed photos already processed. (or were the SOOC?)
Mike Zupancic you can find those images on my Facebook page or Instagram. In reality the process image to me is the most important because that’s what i would display anyways. The video was just supposed to be about the out of focus area.
Both look great. Anyone who happens to own either one is good.
Thank you! I agree!
Keydrin did you retouch any in terms of background blur or just small retouching?
FYI I purchased the Sigma yesterday. Its Buttah! Lol
Thanks for great content.
lytephotography thanks awesome! Very welcome
Amazing bro, it wouldnt be anything without Gabby, looks like we all love her, I think the Sigma wins defo. Need to see something before I buy this lens, amazing again, Thanks ( Henry )
Gone Zapatero very welcome Henry! Thank you
The bokeh on both lenses are pretty much identical.
Awesome Lens, very nice shoots Guy"s
Gerard Pastorelli thank you 😎
wait, there was a lens comparison here? i drifted away at that slow motion...
dinko bilic not a comparison more of a shoot out 😎.
Keydrin Franklin i know, I just kept looking at her 😔😂
dinko bilic 😂😂😂😂
Keep up the good work and videos!
msc1963 thanks so much! Glad I could be of some help.
i was thinking, when i shoot outdoor how could my model change the dress. then i found here pop up pod. thanks.
Nabeel Yousaf haha! Very welcome
DaveSincere haha thank you! I agree
Hahaha.. On which part? =)
DaveSincere Saturation and how it renders the colors oh and Gabby 😂
The Sigma had more, or the retouched edited images? I'd like to see the plain "as-is" photos from both cameras and lenses.
Sigma 135 by far and on the basis of this video it's here tmrw! Thank you!
i like the color of the canon lens better..in the picture where she is holding on to the vine the sigma is making the tree trunks and brush stems purple.. in the canon shot the tree trunks and brush stems are more true to color..other than that they both look great..so i dont think the sigma is worth the extra cash.
sandy sousa those images were toned on the vine and I went for more of that look.
oh..ok..well they both still look amazing
this would be a good test if yall shot on the same settings..of course its gonna look a bit different
Kishawn Gilliam tried the same setting but his was darker, so we tried to get closes we could.
wait how was it darker if you could stop the 1.8 to F2? shouldn't it be the same if yall both have the same shutter and iso and same light source hitting the model? i'm honestly curious cause i dont understand.
Yeah, Keydrin Franklin i need for the portal changing room you got on the BTS
Tutu Osei yes it is a time saver! Link is in the description 😎
It’s funny how everyone who owned the 135mm kept saying it’s the sharpest lens ever. And now, they are like, oh a softer look the 135 gives is more pleasing 😂 too much sharpness is a bad thing. 😂
Lol! I feel ya
All the pros in the comments section.. I'm sitting at the edge of my seat! There's an actual sense of suspense😂
_username13 lol
Nikon D4S with the Sigma 135 is a beast. But for some reason the 1DX with the Canon 135 has better skin tones.
Great video and thanks for the shoot off!!
How does your strobe keep up with the sync speed of your camera ?
darius richards by using HSS High Speed Sync.
I personally like the Nikon/Sigma pairing a tad better :-)
hawg427 😎💯
I find that either lens is excellent. I have the Canon 135 f / 2. And sometimes I do not have the best approach because I do not have many points to focus on my 6D, but that's a camera issue.
Thanks for this!
Greetings from Uruguay!
Flavio Presutti I completely agree! If you are doing post processing you can make both look great!
Nice presentation. Thanks for sharing
Vishweshwar Kandalgaonkar thank you.
Did you use Custom White balance? The Canon looks greener than I'd prefer. (I assume you use Lightroom, in which case I find that the most accurate color profile in Lightroom is with the Canon cameras is camera faithful )
Omesh Singh I used auto
