At the end of the day, this game needs a soft relaunch if it is to have any hope of rebuilding its lost playerbase. That's not going to be easy. Just fixing it wont bring people back, it needs a new enemy faction, an actually compelling story, and a ton of new content, but even that might not be enough. It might be worth going for a hail mary PvPvE mode at this point.

I think the game abuses too much from weak but massive hordes. This is the primary reason why guns are inferior to melee. Guns normally can only hit one or two dudes at a time so facing hordes with it is generally ineficient in comparison with melee that can bring down entire hordes with a couple slashes.i think the game need less of those enemies and more decent enemies that can be a threat individually. When player faces fewer but strongest enemies that can take quite a few melee hits and can dish large ammount of damage is when guns become way more useful allowing player to bring down those fewer but dangerous enemies from safety.
Maps should be a bit more opened and offer different routes to reach one same place as well as allowing for flanking maneuvers. For that same porpuse ranged enemies should be way more prominent than they are now, the game should play way more with the ranged skirmishes, cover and tactical flanqing to create way more variety of situations instead of just the big horde of enemies that players mob down in melee time after time. It does get tired really fast.
These are my impressions and sorry the wall of text. Best of luck!

I've heard a lot of "just wait for it to get good, VT2 took a while to become polished" but like... they've already been through that, they should have already learnt from it, we shouldn't be making excuses for a game studio doing this AGAIN. Comparing VT2 on launch to Darktide on launch is absolutely the wrong comparison to make, it is completely fair to compare Darktide now to VT2 now. If you can't at least match a previous game your company made, develop it more and wait until you are able to match it. Yup. Took me five hours to play what the game had to offer, and realize they were doing something 'brand new' with stats and gear and classes and... well, they fucked it up again. Same thing happened VT1 to VT2, somehow Fatshark took all the lessons on crafting and tossed them all into the shredder in an effort to make a pointless and difficult grind for miniscule stat boosts. • @mrtspence
    @mrtspence Рік тому +32

As a man who has put in like 1k hours between Vermintide 1 and Vermintide 2, this is pretty well classic Fatshark. I knew what I was getting into, but I think a lot of people are rightly upset about the state of the launch. Vermintide 1 was a buggy unfinished mess at launch with an absolutely superb foundation. Vermintide 2 reintroduced half the bugs they fixed in VT1 and a whole host of shit was broken and missing. They had to redo crafting in Vermintide 2 because it was originally so terrible. But eventually, they did patch the game into what could be fairly described as the best game of that entire genre. It just took a long time and it would be better for everyone if they just launched a year later -- but that's just not how the industry works anymore, apparently, and they are far too optimistic about what they can accomplish during their initial development cycle.
Darktide seems to be following exactly this trajectory. The game absolutely nails so much about the core gameplay loop but it reintroduced a ton of bugs that took them months to years to patch and is frankly lacking a critical mass of content to make it feel fresh every time you fire it up. As a hilarious example, The same stagger-overwrite glitch that was in VT1 was reintroduced in VT2, fixed after like 19 months, and is now back in Darktide lol. I've been playing with that same bug for like 8 years now! It also does feel like it is missing a ton of features and the crafting needs a rework. It's like they just cannot ever learn from their mistakes.
All that being said, I don't doubt that it will be an utterly fantastic game in a year's time. Their iterative changes and content additions are almost always positive in the long term and the core of this game is masterful. They just need to do what they always do and fix all the other stuff around the core gameplay loop and add in enough content to make everything have that critical mass of variety a game like this needs. I just wish they could learn from their mistakes, but that apparently just will not ever happen.

    • @sulphuric_glue4468
      @sulphuric_glue4468 Рік тому +1

I really don't think Darktide nails the core gameplay loop AT ALL though. For a game supposedly intended to give more of a balance between melee and ranged combat, it made melee far easier and less engaging and made ranged combat awkward and frustrating by introducing completely nonsensical animations whenever you pull out your weapon and making every weapon have total dogshit aim (the accuracy across the board is SERIOUSLY awful and makes most guns extremely unenjoyable). The only ranged weapon I actually really liked using was the voidstrike staff, its cannonball-like projectiles are fun, and I hope they come to Sienna with her fourth career.
The Ogryn is also truly just fucking annoying in a game about shooting because he gets in the way so much, I get it in principle but it was ABSOLUTELY the wrong move to have an Ogryn in a game like this. If they wanted an abhuman, a ratling would have been better, but I think the desire to have an abhuman for the sake of having it is kind of dumb to begin with given they already have a mutant in the psyker.
There's a slew of other issues with combat too, such as the special attacks on many weapons being either pathetically useless or even actively detrimental because they effectively stun you, and all the ults being extremely pathetic even when buffed as much as possible with feats. There's also literally no excuse whatsoever for dodging interrupting stamina regen, that is a truly abysmal choice which makes kiting near-impossible and generally feels extremely shitty to play with.
There's also a whole host of issues with Toughness that players identified on day one and have gone unfixed, or even made worse. Toughness bleedthrough is extremely anti-fun on every class but ruins the zealot preacher in particular because it kills your ability to actually play as intended (i.e. stay on low health) because it's far too risky. Toughness from coherency punishes players for the mistakes of other people (the player dying or wandering off is punishment enough - having your own ability to play the game ruined because of other people is NEVER fun) and ruins your ability to solo clutch, especially on psyker which has utterly abysmal toughness regen and severely limits build variety on higher difficulties because you are forced to build solely for toughness.
The soul-crushing progression is the main reason I stopped playing, but even ignoring literally everything outside of the moment to moment gameplay, Darktide is so far inferior to Vermintide 2 that I will probably never return to Darktide unless it gets a major overhaul. Vermintide 2 not only does melee combat far better, it does ranged combat far better too, and it flows between melee and ranged much more quickly and naturally, and all the abilities and buffs classes provide you are so much more impactful.

Also, red dust, dust conversion, standardized stats, no dogshit blessing system, and no property lock already makes Vermintide 2 much better than Darktide RNG wise. They literally made their game WORSE than the prequel.

The community itself doesn't know what it wants truth be told. Had a glance at the comms link today. "NEW WEAPONS?! NEW WEAPONS!??!??! HOW DARE YOU!!! FIX THE GAME!!!". Meanwhile on a thread from 2 days ago you got guys whining about there not being enough content and how we need new weapons and maps. So what's wrong with the upcoming update? We've been getting both bug and performance issue fixes, as well as new content (in this case we've seen 2 out of amount of new weapons). What exactly more is there to ask for?
MORE new content? MORE bug and performance issue fixes? Like sure, more is better but I don't see a problem with what's being released right now. Every week there's a new performance patch and every month (according to them), there'll be some kind of content drop. I don't really understand the amount of complaining at this point, nor do I understand people who whine when we get either new content, bug fixes or both. I'm not affiliated with Fatshark or anything either before someone decides to call me out, cause in this day and age you can't have a differing opinion on something without being a "shill" or whatever. Virtually all the criticism of the game's state on release was justified. But right now? I don't see the problem, I really don't.

The classes and story background choices feel generic and quickly run out of new dialog. The lack of named characters prevents the game from generating meaningful character interactions. Rewards. Microtransactions in games, even cosmetics, strip away a reward mechanic of gameplay and move it behind a paywall, hurting the games sense of progression.

    Lemme tell ya about Fatshark:
So I played Vermintide from day 1 before they added anything to it. Then they got the bright idea of adding the Contracts system to the game. They sent an email message to players requesting their console ID so they could hotfix the game with the Contracts data so we could test it out. Starting up the game with a buddy of mine who also got the hotfix, we were met with the inability to join each others' game, in fact, we couldn't play the game with anyone. Great. So we pressed on and decided to have a look at the Contracts board. Upon interacting with the board, the game would crash to dash.
Players went back and forth with Fatshark trying to get them to fix whatever they did and ultimately they had to rescind the hotfix and restore everyone back to the original build.
Then came the DLC. They added 3 DLC which introduced a new weapon tied to a specific character, there were achievements and everything for these new weapons. First DLC comes out and when no one can seem to get the new weapon to drop, they complain to Fatshark. Turns out Fatshark forgot to add the weapon to the reward pool. Oopsie! Then comes the second DLC, and wouldn't ya know it, they forgot to add the weapon to the pool - again. So here comes the third DLC. Surely by this point they've learned their lesson and someone ticked the box to add the weapon to the reward pool? Nope, they botched it all 3 times!
I dunno what it is about this developer, they make fun games (but let's face it, they're riffing on Left 4 Dead) that they are completely incompetent at maintaining.

The issues are all the things surrounding that. And they're not individually huge things but the number of them is huge and because none of the mechanics exist in a vacuum the problems are cumulative. They compound onto one another because they all interact. One thing is scuffed and that affects the next thing which is also scuffed on its own which builds the ball as it keeps rolling downhill, collecting all the individual screw ups together into a big katamari ball and avalanche of not fuckin' fun to interact with once the new wears off, which jeez if you were playing psyker at launch it wore off fast. Everything kept coming back to "why wouldn't I just play the guardsman? I've already leveled it and he has gear and he works."

This said there are things that can be improved upon to help the game become better and you have identified a number of these. Now that baseline systems are in place you can play with items a bit more easily - there are still parts of this process that need attention though. The recent updates have provided a positive trend when it comes to resolving problems and iterating upon feature sets. I think this game will evolve into the game it needs to be to survive however that will take time. I hope they can balance the iterative process of improvement with adding additional content in a satisfying way.

Impressive how you managed to pinpoint and explain most of the issues I've had with the game, for example; I never really knew why, but I pretty much only played level 3 missions for some reason, thanks for making it make sense. Also, it was not that I found lvl4-5 too hard(in VT2 I always played on Legendary and, with the right team, sometimes Cata), just didn't feel the need to, since, as you explained, I never gained anything for playing on the harder difficulties.
Would've loved to have seen someone hammer a bit _harder_ on there not being sharing between characters, it's my personal pet pewee.
Sure, makes sense in a way, initially, since you're a prisoner at the start. But at level 30 you become a part of the warband, perfect opportunity to have item/currency-sharing unlocked between all your other lvl30 characters. I would be fine with it being a bit of a struggle up until lvl30, as a prisoner we need to prove ourselves, makes it a bit of a journey and makes sense thematically.

I only started DT two months ago and I've had a blast, but I can totally see that I am going to get burned out prior to more significant content. I do recommend the game considering its price vs. game play time you get out of it but just barely. As it stands the game feels like a 6 or 7 out of 10 when it should be a 9. I tend to tell people you will get 50-100 hours of gameplay, but you will most likely drop it around this time as you will go back to COMPLETE games. Just overall DT feels like it needed maybe 6-12 months more development. If they were pressed for cash, they should have released in early access for this time. It's sad how good of a game it is and how bad the experience becomes. I won't even touch on the horrible lack of story content.... that is maybe a 2/10. This is my biggest grip with the game. But the grinding feels like it's taking forever to level up. After leveling up my Zealot and grinding for half decent gear, I don't have the drive/will power to do it with the other classes. As I saw in another comment on here, the came is just "cool enough" to get by and get money out of 40k fans. And I remember Fatshark saying back when the game came out that they would be adding the option to play solo/with bots, and I'm still over here waiting for that option. I'll be falling back to Vermintide 2 and DRG to keep my enjoyment.

There are some cosmetics tied to fairly difficult achievements I could work toward, but they don't actually look good. A "comms-link", just for the sake of saying, "we're communicating" that doesn't actually communicate much more than just being a teaser really is just not going to work anymore.
they decimated their player base, get some good response with "blessings of the omnissiah" and now we're back to nothing burgers already.

This is 100% my experience with Dark Tide. So since I never had a complet max team and the performance kills me to often I don't play damnation, but I can agree with everything elese.
For me I deleted the game and I may check it out again when a lot of patches have been done, but yeah buying a few hundred guns selling most of them, upgrading the best and noticing non of them could be perfect even with rolling the perks over a hundred times broke me in the end.

    nice video, fellow 21:9er :)
I don't think anyone has described this game with the good and bad more accurately and honestly.
I quit playing back in Janurary and just started up again a week ago after seeing several patches and a very large patch from under two weeks ago and I'm having a much better time. I'm still so frustrated the way this was handled because the majority of that playerbase that we could have had will never return. Many veterans of Vermintide2 warned this was going to happen but many of us chose to believe it would be better this time just to make ourselves feel better. Coasting on that copium

Yeah, this video pretty much sums it up for me exactly. I log in once or twice a week to play with friends who do enjoy it, but yeah.... it's no VT2.
With that said, I disliked the loot boxes in VT2 as well and I much prefer the hour shops now that you can buy the base gear. RNG shop or RNG loot box makes no difference to me except now my inventory is not completely filled with vendor trash.
.... except with the new system it is as you described in this video.
I just cannot understand why anyone thinks the looter shooter gear dump is fun in any game, be it Diablo or Borderlands (both are games that I have enjoyed despite these systems). Going through dozens or even hundreds of items, comparing them, and selling them off through an absolutely useless UI (looking at you Borderlands) just is not fun to me.
The ideal system, for me, would be something like they had in Winds of Magic. Earn blessings and perks that can be slottable into a base weapon to upgrade it all the way to max. These blessings can be hard to come by and require a grind (but fun gameplay is not grind to me) but there would be little RNG involved and even if there were you could have a path forward (turning in several weaker blessings for a stronger one for instance).
I need something to progress towards in a game (I have found). In VT2 this was all of the weird achievements with beating missions in challenging ways. I would love to see that make a comeback here. I don't hate the penances as much as some do.... I really think they are fine... but there are far too few of them.
As for more levels.... yes and no.... you can have any number of levels and they'll get old fast. The reason that VT2 still works for me is that the missions are varied enough despite the levels being the same. Mission variety helps though, and in DT everything looks more or less the same (Throneside, Desert, or.... other underground stuff). The gameplay loop still holds though. New levels are on the far bottom of my list that I would like to see fixed. Give me new classes before new levels.
    Anyway, good video.

I had your Psyker's experience on my Veteran, my first character. I didn't get a power sword until 2 levels before max, and I didn't get a bolter until the mission I hit max level. Luckily, that bolter was a god roll that made the long slog worth it, and I actually really like the feel of difficulty III so getting stuck there with the lasguns and chainsword I had wasn't a problem.
The performance issues people had were very surprising. My PC is pretty much the bare minimum, and the game works great. You can tell it could be prettier, but it's fine. It's like they spent all their optimization time on the bottom end (which I personally appreciated) and assumed that effort would help the higher end more. Usually it does, so I'm not sure what happened here, but the high end machine people have barely a better experience than I do.

I've spent more times bantering with shills on the Discussion section of the game on Steam than playing it at this point. It played out like a typical besieged Imperium of Man world, doomed to fall to the growing tides of Chaos that bear down on upon them and seeing the light die in so many eyes as so many ardent defenders slowly stopped popping into threads to defend this hot, steamy, mess.
But that was months ago. Still more fun than I had with the game.

this is something that i've noticed a lot of people keep on saying about Darktide: "It's nothing like Vermintide." And I'm just sitting here listening and thinking "Yeah, because it's not Vermintide...Question Mark?" I understand that both games are made by the same developer, but you can't expect every game made by a studio/developer to have the same exact gameplay. Now, I'm not entirely sure if it's just me, but I honestly never really gave those little sub stats on items much thought. I just try to see what types of wargear have higher ratings and I equip them and use them at my leisure. I know that this makes me sound like a casual shitter that only cares about playing the game, but that's because I am. I dont care if i have an optimally built item, I just take advantage of various mechanics in the game to make up for some shortcomings of the gear i bring. But, to each their own, I still love Darktide. I love the atmosphere, the gameplay, the progression, and everything about it. That's my "hot take" on this game

Also important to mention if story is your thing, even though the game was advertised as having story by Dan Abnett who I'm sure a lot of 40k fan recognize the name off, the game has next to no story in it.
If you look around youtube I'm sure you can find the roughly 5 minutes cutscenes that is everything you get for the entire game.
The characters themselves are also a big step down from Vermintide 2 feeling soulless and hollow, endlessly repeating the same canned responses over and over.
During character creation you choose a basic background that will never be brought up in game unless you happen to choose Cadia as your homeworld.
So if good writing and lore is a big thing for you, theres very little of it here.

The power sword only has 2 charged hits for heavy and light attacks. The 3rd hit, even tho visibly still charged, doesnt do bonus damage or stagger. I found that out in the meat grinder on release day. Probably hasn't even been patched yet since its not mentioned here lol. After finding this out, the weapon became more tedious and less satisfying having 1 less hit and having to pause during combat to activate its charge alot more often during combat.

18:40 basically the crux of everything wrong with gaming. You're not playing a game, you're working to earn the privilege to play the game.
You can't invite friends into this game like you can into L4D. They're starting from 0, you're starting at max level, they can't try out the build you've already min maxed which they would find fun, because they haven't "earned" the right (or lucked out the drops) for it.
Any adult with a full time job, some other responsibilities and a lack of addiction to w40k, means that this game is a huge waste of time.

Spaghetti code isn't the result of devs that don't care. It's the result of devs that were rushed. Any dev can write lots of code and get many things done in a short time, but doing that adds a LOT of tech debt.

Me and a buddy really wanted to enjoy this game at launch. I started as Cadian Vet because RIP Cadia, friend went as big boi Oggy named 'poot poot'. We were willing to give the server issues some time to be fixed, but the main thing that eroded our initial enjoyment of the game was that as we started to scale up in levels and difficulties it never really felt like anything we did was worth our investment of time. There was a literal moment during a mission where our figuratively smiles and enjoyment of the game faded and near the end of the mission all we felt was immense disappointment. This was after 30 or so hours of just essentially do the same shit over and over, no radical changes, that is none that were properly integrated and not rife with bugs or in glitched mechanical states.
-Completely horrendous performance. I was a foolish man who decided to get a 4090 and is what I currently use. When you can't even achieve a stable 60fps framerate in this busted game with a 40-freaking-90 you know there are severe mistakes or oversights in software optimization for this claptrap.
-Missions had poor RNG and never gave satisfactory drops or resources.
-OG Grimoires and Scriptures were separate missions, and the number required to complete a mission had to have been conceived by a total smoothbrain. Like seriously, collect 15-20 grims just to complete a mission?
-Several missions were literally impossible to complete due to the manner in which specialists spawned, and so you ended up starting a mission just to make it about 5-10 minutes into it, die and get tossed back to hub...and then server crash probably happened at some point, like it always did. Meanwhile enjoying the absurdly slow load times.
-FS damn near went radio silent post-launch and shit hit the fan. I guess they thought that if they just shoved their head in the sand the issues would resolve themselves.
    - Perfectly working, no bugs or issues detected cosmetic shop that "just worked". Huh, okay so bullshit-ass premium cosmetics to make yourself look cooler in the hellishly busted missions or constantly crashing server hub is more important that balance & stability.
If anyone is thinking that things have gotten that much better 1 month after the posting of this video, FS released yet more "community updates" where they attempted to tease another map drop. One. One new map. And it's not that "new". It's literally retreading old ground from a previous base-game map. To what extent I can't say definitively, but judging from other players past experiences and gripes, it'll probably be a "backwards traversed" map, that is a slightly tweaked map with maybe one or two minor branch-offs from the original that you traverse backwards in comparison. This is the level of effort exhibited by these charlatans. Please just go play Verm2, DoW1, Mechanicus, and other WHF/40k games that don't suck.
    ...
    Or go Rock & Stone.

I got all 4 characters max level, got between 490-500ilvl on each of them, and completed the penances. What is there left for me to do? What goal is there to chase? There's no secret challenge boss, no competitive mode, no additional story, no season pass to complete, no achievements to chase, no more character progression. Nothing.
