Great video as usual Daniel. One thing I'll add is that isolation plays usually result in fewer turnovers, so they're considered more "safe" because you're more guaranteed to get a shot off and have less have a chance of the possession resulting in a fast break for the other team.

Definitely a simpler concept than zone but physically is extremely difficult. Not all players in the league can even play in a switching scheme. You need lots of rangey defensive wings that can guard smalls and bigs alike
This video only discusses one positive outcome of switching, it doesn't tell the negative effect of when the offense intentionally forces a switch to isolate against a much smaller, worse defender and take them to school. Teams that switch a lot can't hide bad players on defense and a good, versatile offense can really punish a team that switches too liberally.

Isolations with ball movement and cutters can be interesting and work, Isolatons with 4 guys just standing around isn't nearly as successful. Ironically, your example of the Suns game where Booker got cut off after the dribble handoff, not only was Ayton WIDE open under the basket (Crowder was way too slow on the pass), after he got the ball the guy in the corner (I think it was Cam Johnson) was even more wide open. That play should have been at least 2 points and instead Ayton kind of panicked and put up a bad little bunny, so the play was fine the guy who hit a ton of shots in the paint during the playoffs just missed it.

Interesting. So much of the focus on the Warriors and their Death lineup is concentrated on the offense but it seems they drove the game forward on the defensive end as well.
Great analysis. But Iso is basically a reaction to switching defenses. Clippers had a lot of success this year, even without Leonard, thanks to their switching defense. Milwuakee same too. In some parts of the finals Giannis/Portis were playing 5 to switch on Paul/Booker. There is no way you can win without switching, because when it's playoff time you need a "small" starting five, or maybe with a quick big as Portis or Capela. I think that the Rockets project, made by D'Antoni, was a bit underlook. That's the same way Clippers, Brooklyn, and Milwuakee (sometimes) played defensively.
I'll comment before watching the whole video. MONEY! If they win the game off an iso play, they get a better highlight. I could go on and on about how this will bring MONEY but you all know how it goes.
On a general note, you only have to beat 1 guy, the game becomes 1v1 instead of 5v5. And offense always have the upperhand, most players play defense reactionary. It's easier to play offense w/o getting called offensive foul than playing defense w/o getting called defensive foul. On a more detailed level, you'll want your superstars to carry your team. Not all players are made for last minute situations. Having a rhythm off your shot is key and most last minute shots are not catch and shoot. The defense will play a tighter man to man and as a defender you'll rather not gamble on leaving the guy on weakside open. This tighter man to man defense makes sense for teams to play iso, any bad rotations will be spotted easily and punished. But I'd rather just see it as a 1v1 and the best player wins. My superstar using a variety of his go to moves (step back, fadeaway, floater, post move, quick first step) to seal the win while the defense can just play ... defense.
Matthew 12:36 “But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.” Proverbs 18:21 “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.”
Great look at how the overall numbers are misleading wrt playoff efficiency. Isos usually are a "bail out" with little shot clock time left during the regular season as well --meaning less eff %. Super interesting to see KD's PPP go *down* as his isos increase. Just speaks to how great he is playing off ball in and in a team offense. Can really plug him in anywhere.
yeah, he's obviously a great iso scorer as well. But what takes him apart from the other great scorers like harden is his offball and within-the-system offense. Steph is the same as well but less iso skill imo
That's the tradeoff with the switch. The defense loses the ability to chose matchups to stunt the offensive system. Otherwise it's fight through screens or surrender the 4 on 3. It doesn't seem intuitive that teams would save their best plays for the final moments of a playoff season, so they rely on the spontaneity of their best offensive players.
So if switching is so above and beyond defensively and it destroys great offenses like warriors or clippers, why don’t teams play that the whole time and they even bother with help defense or doubling ?

@@xstatic6 yes he did - I think that is a fair point
However I feel they're out of movement or team flow
Eg; yes he'll roll with Capela, but a lot of the time other players are standing around in case the D collapses on Harden's drive
That is a hard way to get buckets as "the others". Standing around waiting for Harden to make something happen, and if he doesn't then taking a shot with the shot clock low
+++
I was hoping that the Rockets would beat the Warriors, for what it's worth :)
And I think they would have if CP3's hamstring didn't fail him
Yes, that GSW squad was definitely stacked and well coached
Can you do a vid on and russ and rhe lakers and how can it work and why it will or might work and great vid and channel
great video
5:57 I actually don't think its that bad of defense cuz dre stays on hardens left hip which takes away his strong hand and a lot of the moves he likes. i think golden state did this by design, but u are right that the isolation resulted in a high percentage shot
Great vid! Iso ball
The Curry vs. Tucker is also a hot-hand fallacy. Just because Curry scored twice does not mean that he will score on his next attempt. I know that the hot-hand fallacy is very hard to accept for sports fan... My apologies.
Kinda agree kinda disagree
With a player like curry it’s not a fallacy lmao even if he’s having a horrible shooting night you can’t give him an inch for a second. He can start 1-12 and finish like 6-19 or some shit like that out of nowhere. He only needs to
Feel a little confident
So MDA was once again leading the league with his iso-Rocket game plan 😱
Less moving parts. “Just make it happen”
Content yes bring me more content!!!!
Grear vid once again coach
6:46- started to hear bars here
Why do people need this video.
Isolation should be a obvious the best ball handler or shooter should be separated for clutch plays.
Damn lilliard was cooking that season sheesh
Would love to know what PPP players like Carmelo Anthony get from ISO ball
And whether it is as high as Kobe and Harden
Did Carmelo just suffer from doing it too much, but it was actually good at it?
And team ball is a better way in the regular season?
Very interesting
Melo isn’t the best ball handler and can’t always beat guys off the dribble which forces him to settle for tough long 2s
Kobe is just way too good at making these shots
this is random, but khris middleton’s iso game is so underrated.
Because big time players make big time plays
get this man a nba scouting position
but he'll leave us. It's selfish but i have lost great content creators like this before.
He'll get there if he keeps this up 📈
We need to enjoy him whilst he's here 😅
I've seen 2 great channels go, and another (through Twitter) I never saw get NBA jobs
They're watching UA-cam too 💯
When you were taking about hard hedging you didn’t show it. You showed a contain by Kendrick Perkins and regular hedge by Chris Bosh
Great video tho!
Which isolation play you think is more potent in the playoffs? An off the dribble drive or 3, an off the dribble midrange or a post up isolation
Off dribble midrange
@@n.buckets4821 Why so?
@@anthonycelestin3559
- Khris Middle midrange pull-up that sealed game 6 in finals vs Suns 2021
- Kawhi’s midrange fade bounce in game 7 2019
- Jayson Tatum game 3 shot over KD 2021
- Not to mention countless midrange clutch J’s in Jordan and Kobe’s careers
@@n.buckets4821 I believe the post up is the best option for isolation whether it’s posting up at the high post, elbows, mid post or low post. Post up takes energy but sometimes off the dribble midrange takes more energy depending on how good quick your crossover is, sometimes dribbling too much takes more energy. The off the dribble midrange can be useful in a pick & roll situation like CP3 does where it opens up the floor for himself & others cause teams have to guard CP3 closer with his midrange but it’s a pick your poison type thing too cause CP3 is such a great passer so he puts a lot of pressure on the D that way
Of course there’s data to it but it’s also just a hooper rule. You get the damn ball to your best player during clutch time and you get out of the way
