This is one of those few bands that comes along that just stand heads and shoulders above the rest. And because they're true geniuses, not just idiots following the pack, not likely to obtain mega-star status, but the Johns did reach a bit of fame with their kids songs. I'd put them in the category of Zappa, Talking Heads, etc. kind of genius, fun, weird, intelligent, unique, insightful style of play. They're great in concert too, if you ever get the chance.
Saw them do "Shoehorn" and they had this great setup where the guy with the triangle was placed front & center looking dejected because he had so little to do.
They were from Forest Hills, Queens and when they were trying to make it they had a dial-in service to listen to new songs. The 4k bandwidth was terrible but the songs still sounded good. Made me a go to a few of their shows at the Ritz.
I saw them open for Violent Femmes in '96 or '97, my little sister had I had the best time. TMBG thought not enough people were physically reacting to them so they stopped playing until people got up and started dancing. A conga line started on the floor. I saw them play at Easter Kentucky University.
Love the Boognish avatar!!!! Boognish is the ultimate avatar. Also, today is the first palindrome date in over 900 years, apparently. Happy 02/02/2020!!!! 👍
Pure musical talent, I'm learning that each album is it's own work of art. Their voices are fantastic and feel mellow yet intense at the same time. Through all the abstract lyrics it all makes sense in the end.
that's actually true, if you find the documentary about the band titled Gigantic: A Tale of Two Johns, they do mention at one point that Flansy is the gregarious outgoing rock star persona and Linnell would be just as happy writing songs in his basement forever even if they never got heard...
I saw them live several times back in the mid 90s, around the time of this performance, on the Apollo 18 tour that is. They played Mountain Stage, a radio show in Charleston, WV and we got to meet them afterwards at their van. We sat and talked to them for probably an hour, got some stuff signed and some TMBG picks and whatnot. They were both super nice and accommodating. It was a great time. They were as chipper and awesome as they seem like they would be. A few months after that they did a show called "An Evening With TMBG," in Columbus (I believe. Either that or Cincinnati, as those were the 2 places we always went for shows. They played about 3 hours, no opener. It was great. Good, somewhat clean, fun times.
Seeing them live in Brooklyn's Prospect Park I would swear that Linnell was staring at me through the entirety of "Guitar". Talked to a few other people after the show and they all said the exact same thing, that during "Guitar", he was staring directly into THEIR souls. I wonder how he does that? Must be magic. Also, singing about pulling the plug on a mother's life support has to be the darkest lyrical theme they ever created.
They Might Be Giants released their 20th studio album in 2018, I Like Fun. They're touring, they sound better than ever (I saw the Philly live stream a few weeks back, amazing) and the songs are brilliant. The first time I saw them live was touring off the back of Flood, in 1990.
My older brother listened to this when it was new. It's still kinda mysterious and cool and I don't really know what it's about. Typical older brother coolness
Four things: 1. CD "Long-Boxes," remember those? Hahahah! I used to save those, cut out the front cover artwork and hang them on my walls :-b 2. The design on Flansburgh's amp is pretty tight. 3. @theanonymouspunk "Son I am able," she said "though you scare me." "Watch," said I "Beloved," I said "watch me scare you though." said she, "Able am I, Son."

@theanonymouspunk I'm waiting for my mom to die so I get her inheritance. She did the same with her parents. She had the same sentiments exactly. ;D But after a while... As I see the spring of the grandfather clock unwinding, and I have kids... "Dad, palindrome" :| What goes around comes around.
I have been wanting to see them for years, but the only under 18 shows in Australia were in the wrong state (VIC). I turned 14 the year after their over 14's concert was in Victoria :(. Can't wait for the next one though.
It's about a guy who murders his sickly mother to get the inheritance and realizes that his children are likely to do the same thing to him, aka the palindrome. Everything ends as it begins.
Pastel Pigicorn I think it’s because they themselves have been pigeonholed as “novelty music”. I don’t know if Linnell’s a fan or not but I’m guessing he isn’t either
He plays with TMBG for most of their Lettermen performances and he and his band ocassionally play with other artists here and there. From the top of my head I remember him doing a pretty rad version of "I Want You To" with Weezer and doing keys on "Hitchin' A Ride" with Green Day.

Every time my eyes lock with Linell’s I get a shiver like the first time I was touched intimately by my first love
Linnel can always find the right camera and give his signature stare-down!
Twenty plus years of liking this band and I still maintain that Linnell is responsible for my catapult into puberty.
Leigh Timper I remember Clarissa saying that John Linnell was one of the things she loved on the first episode of Clarissa Explains It All.
Greatest intro line to a song ever.

They were from Forest Hills, Queens and when they were trying to make it they had a dial-in service to listen to new songs. The 4k bandwidth was terrible but the songs still sounded good. Made me a go to a few of their shows at the Ritz.

Flans is so cool.
He'd be even cooler if he turned it down about 10 notches.
@@ClueSign he has to do something. He speaks more than stares, at least.

I LOVE that yell!! TMBG may not have huge numbers of fans ala Beyonce, but we're a very devoted, vocal following!

Justine Camp The conga line and confetti cannon were features of the shows back then. They're always able to make their shows like a celebration.
Like the early 00’s spin the dial. And Marty Beller needing millions of people clapping to be able to play.

It's just relentless come-to-bed eyes from Linnell!
Yes John, I am tired, I would like a story, a cuddle and a glass of warm milk.
I thought those were "getting into character while singing about matricide" eyes. Then again, I've never been a good judge of facial expressions. XD

Precisely
linnel's a beast, and that les paul flansy's playing is super sweet
They're..they're baby..
Flans is probably just more social of the two. I doubt Linnell hates people, just shy or very introvert.
