It's amazing to look at it today and remember The Monkees were considered untalented hacks at that time. Compared to the "artists" of today The Monkees were brilliant. Were they underrated or is it just that bad today...or maybe a combination of both.
Classic song! I can't think any of today's singers who could give this number the same fervor and intensity that Micky did - and still can! I want his babies.
Wow! What a performance. This was used in an episode of the TV series. I haven't seen the performance in years. How many of today's artists could attempt this number? iolani77
You know, there seems to be a lot of talent here that has gone unnoticed over the years. It's a shame that The Monkees was the apex of his career, I think Dolenz could have had a much longer career as an R&B or Jazz singer.
Thanks for posting this cool Monkee tune. Davy is cool , but it is great to see other singers ge the spotlight too. Awesome unusual Monkee song I always was impressed with.
He's doing a "live" vocal on the released version which was originally the B side of "Daydream Believer" if I remember correctly...this also opened an episode originally during the second season, usually of course, the songs were relegated to the end of an episode...just an FYI for and from a Monkees fanatic!
Sounds like Cat, bit that was Bud Brisbois. One of Stan Kenton's lead and screech players. Recorded for lots of Capital record artists. One of the best trumpet players ever. Never had the endurance and flair of Maynard Ferguson, but he could screech! This trumpet solo absolutely makes this recording.
I loved them. But you are right. they got 'no respect' back then. Really sort of cutting edge when you look back. They were the first music 'videos' . before that concept really had been thought of.
Credits for trumpet on this song were listed as Trumpet: Bud Brisbois, Virgil Evans, Uan Rasey, & Thomas Scott. I have never read anywhere that "Cat" helped in this recording. In this video, Mickey is actually singing "live" to pre-recorded music
Anyone know the identities of the saxophonist and guitar player? Cat Anderson, I note, on the horn. Magnificent video! Performance is fantasttic. Thanks.
Yes. Today's prospective artists should be made to watch this performance. Perhaps they would learn a thing or two (although judging by the arrogance of some I doubt it). Many would, however, remain as rank amateurs!
Let me qualify that, what I meant was "longer" career as in many more great recordings and performances as a singer beyond The Monkees years. Of course he should have been a a member of the group.
I agree that old stuff is good but i don't think you should descriminate. I'm 15 but whren i was younger no way in hell would i have ever heard the beatles i really hated old things BECAUSE they were old. so i guess what i'm saying is that if you hate something just because it's old or new you may be missing out on a lot. That being said there's a lot of crap outhere nowadays, but i'm sure back then some music groups needed a little help!

when they started writing their own music they were so much better as a band
I remember when MTV use to show the Monkees back in mid 80s when I was a kid. Which got me hooked on to their music. Very talented

The B-Side of "Daydream Believer" and it got many more spins in my house than the A-Side ever did.

Groovy, homeboy was C walking ahead of his time

U r absolutely right. I think the episode was called "The wild Monkees" but it might b good for someone to fact check this.
Go Micky! One of my favorite Monkees songs.

Something tells me 1967. Filmed in Florida, I'm told.
Let me know if I'm mistaken.

Micky Dolenz channels his inner James Brown.....
I can almost sing along with it, I just need to work on the words more. I have the greatest hits CD and I listen to it pretty much all the time
Wouldn't THAT be cool!
