      We can't wait to get started! In fact, we aren't waiting. There are things we can start building or modifying right now. I will release a new video about how we modifyed our new electric outboard, and why made the changes. We need to build a few tools as well, like our positive pressure respirators (for sanding the boat). We are trying to get a lot of stuff done before the kit arrives, since once it does, all our time will be consumed with building the boat.

      Hey David. Thanks for the kind words. I have been working on catamaran designs for many years, having modeled many of my own designs from scratch. When collaborating with Schionning Designs to bring another model to their excellent Solitaire line, we had the chance to add a lot of personal preferences. But we started with the 1490 and left most of the engineering alone (like the entire hull design). Other folk may find that the original Solitaire 1490's features are more to their liking, and it is a fine boat; however, this is our take on the Solitaire 1520. Of course, Schionning's designers and engineers did a lot of work on this new design since I only created the concept and that was based off of their Solitaire 1490 design. We will be making a video, soon, about the actual process of collaborating with Schionning to bring the1520 to their Solitaire lineup. This new model will be available for others to build as a kit, just like their 1490.

    • @SailingSVLynx
      @SailingSVLynx  2 роки тому +3

      That's the fun in designing your own boat! You could put the galley where you like it best. For us, we wanted a full height wall on the end of the galley so that we could have a full size refrigerator/freezer/ice maker. If we put the galley on the other side, with a pass through, we coldn't have that big regrigerator in the galley. Also, we wanted to tie the inside and outside tables together with a lift up windows that opens that space up when we wish To each their own!

      Absolutely, but those would take up under counter storage space, which we need. By putting the galley against the helm area, we could claim the extra vertical space.

    Hi, I really enjoyed the video and your innovative changes. What are the budget costs for a) getting the original design modified and working drawings produced? b) The actual build, if you had farmed that out to a yard? What will your hull materials be - core, resin, fibre? Why did you choose to design and build when there are so many designs out there? What do you anticipate your numbers will be: SA/D, D/L, Upwind sail area? Thanks again for a great video!!!

    • @SailingSVLynx
      @SailingSVLynx  2 роки тому +1

      Hello and thanks for watching the Virtual Tour video! Many of the answers you seek are covered in our other videos. If you watch Part 1 and 2 of Navigating the Maze, you will learn all about our journey to choosing to build S/V Lynx and why we are building rather than buying. We go over the costs to build the boat in "What comes in our Catamaran Kit", though we don't go into the specfic numbers of what the plans cost and the engineering charges to modify them into the 1520. That's because our path was unique, since Schionning normally sells Kit Catamarans. In our special case, we were collaborating with them to create a new kit model in their line. They don't genenrally do that for customers so the pricing was odd for us. If you want to know the price of the plans for any of their boats, just email them and they will generate you a quote, including one for the new 1520 which isn't even listed on their site yet. As for how much it would cost to build at a yard, we are covering that in this week's video in detail, but the 1490 was about $760,000 when we checked three months ago, if built in Thailand. If you want to calculate the SA/D for the 1520 as configured for S/V Lynx, the boat dry displacement is 25,356 pounds, the LCC is about 8,400 pounds, the Mainsail is 80 sq. m., the self-tacking jib is 40.2 sq. m., the upwind style screecher is 85 sq. m., and the LWL is 49'10" and if you want to know, the BCL is 20' 1". So, the BCL/LWL ratio is 40.03% and she drafts 2'2" boards up. Let me know if you need any other numbers and I will see if I have them.

    Did you look into Aluminum Catamaran? Safer for fires as fiberglass burns very intense and fast. Fire spreads so fast you may only have minutes to abandon ship.
    Fiberglass gets damage very quickly from rocks. Look at the recent yacht that landed on the rocks in Maui and during salvage sunk very quickly.
    Cold temperature water is not recommended for fiberglass if you want to go to areas like Greenland.
    I see you're using basalt for hull protection in beaching. You should look into the new flir type systems for monitor logs and opticals at night.
    You are on the right track. I am an Electrical Engineer that developed the first Hybrid Electric vehicles about 16 years ago. Thanks for sharing. It is a big project.
    I see you are in LA, will you be building your cat in LA area. I am in the Bay Area.

    • @SailingSVLynx
      @SailingSVLynx  Рік тому

      Most catamarans and other sailboats are fiberglass and extremely few have fire issues. I've mentioned this before, but statistically, the most dangerous part of crossing an ocean in a fiberglass boat is driving to the marina to depart, yet people drive every day without a worry. Besides, we already purchased our boat so we made our bed and are sleeping in it. Our hulls are designed to be beached and then we added basalt to make them even stronger. Yyes, we are looking into flir cameras. And you are correct, we are building our boat in So. Cal. Oh, and you're welcome, and thanks for posting, we appreciate your interest and comments, even if we don't share your concerns. BTW if you want to see a fiberglass sailboat in cold climates, watch sailing UMA. They did just fine. Keep the comments coming, we never mind reading other opinions or suggestions. :)

    • @SailingSVLynx
      @SailingSVLynx  2 роки тому +3

      Each cabin has an ensuite head with toilet and sink. These are dry heads. There is a shared shower between each set of heads in each hull, accessed from either connected head. So, four heads, two showers.

  • @mrmped1
    @mrmped1 2 роки тому

    Great improvements. The storage looks a little light in the galley. Maybe put one of the coolers in one of the hulls. A second question, are you able to access helm control for repairs easily. Might be difficult with the fridge there.

    • @SailingSVLynx
      @SailingSVLynx  2 роки тому +1

      Helm control is accessible from the backside of the steering console. Therefore the refrigerator isn't an issue. We have plenty of storage for the galley, incuding some in the floor and other locations in the salon. We will show all of that during the build videos. :)

    Great video! I gotta ask, are you really going to keep all your electronics out in the "barbecue" for all charging? Or is that only for offshore use where escape is harder? Or are you expecting particularly risky batteries like e-bike or hoverboards or something? It's a great idea, maybe not the most convenient though.

    • @SailingSVLynx
      @SailingSVLynx  Рік тому

      Well, it won't be a barbecue, at least, on the inside. We are making a custom charge box that will be housed inside a stainless steel box that resembles a barbecue. And yes, particularly risky batteries will be charged in there most of the time. Things like NMC chemistry batteries for things like our scuba lights, that kind of thing. If just one of those types of batteries shorts, it could burn down the entire boat if it were inside the salon or a cabin.

  • @shelleybradish-cooney9018
    @shelleybradish-cooney9018 2 роки тому

    Craig Schionning did the designing. You have done modifications.

    • @SailingSVLynx
      @SailingSVLynx  2 роки тому +2

      Schionning certainly designed the 1490 and I began with the hulls and basic structure of that boat since I liked it very much (and still do). I lengthed it slightly, reworking the steps down to the sugar scoops, then changed most of the stern, I completely changed the helm, reworked the salon interior layout, and added a completely different the salon roof with wrap around windows. I moved the stern winches, changed the cockpit table and much of the seating, added a bike garage, cleared all the hatches along the side walkways by adding portlights, created sliding doors to close off the sugar scoops, added dive lockers with locations above for barbeques, and I included a new gantry lift system for the tender. I also added a hard top over the new helm, a rain catchment system on the salon roof, swing up windows between the salon and cockpit, and one at the helm. I lengthened all the beds, moved the doors to the stern cabins and a few other tweaks to the cupboards. I also added storage under the salon floor. And, just to note, I did all these 'modifications' by creating my own 3D concept model of the entire boat from scratch before ever talking to Schionnig Designs.
      At some point, that many 'modifications' begin to make a new boat. After looking over my model, they must have agreed that I had gone beyond just modifications since they did not call it the 1490 any more, but agreed to collaborate on a new kit they plan to sell based on my concept model, which they eventually named the 1520. Schionning called this a collaboration between us (their words, not mine), and it truely was a collaboration since Robert Quinn and one of their modelers gave me a lot of input on many of those changes I modeled in my concept. And after our collaboraton on the design was completed, their engineers made sure it all worked, though I paid for that. But at no point was Craig Schionning in on any of the many design meetings with me about the 1520. But, hey, you can say he designed the 1520 if you want, it doesn't matter to me. The base structure was certainly taken from the 1490 and I get no kickbacks for my concepts used in the design of this new model. All I care about is that I got exactly the boat I modeled before I ever began talking to Schionning Desgins, which happens to be a new model that they named the 1520. I very much enjoyed collaborating with the Schionning team to bring my concept model to life, regardless of who has their name on the deisgn. It certainly doesn't need to be me. I just want to sail S/V Lynx.
