50y old and still a jam. CB was, is and always will be a legend.
He was... maybe 30? at that point.
Are you saying he was 50 this was 50 yrs ago because try more like 70
@@grab-a-skillet3585 the song ia 50yo. I didnt phrase it too well lol
I wish it was 50yrs old cuz I would only be 41, then lol in fact, I wish it was only 40yrs old, for that matter ;)
Alas, 1958 was 64yrs ago, now… darn it….
@@buzzbomb67 stupid math lol
This song was put on the Voyager spacecraft on a gold record along with the likes of Beethoven he will live in eternity in outer space as an example of our styles in music. He is the definition of rock music. I had the great fortune to see him live. Thank you.👍
Oooh I’m very jealous of you for having watched him live! Worldwide music legend.
@@Lucaz99 it was new years eve 1997 one of the best days ever. Only about 200 people everyone was on the strip at parties and I think it was kind of last minute. Came on the radio telling where just that day. I was only about 30 feet from him during the whole thing.
Awesome you got to see him. I always love how they put this in the voyager and the letter Carl Sagan wrote to Chuck when they did:
Dear Chuck Berry,
When they tell you your music will live forever,
you can usually be sure they're exaggerating. But
Johnny B. Goode is on the Voyager interstellar records
attached to NASA's Voyager spacecraft -- now two billion
miles from Earth and bound for the stars. These records
will last a billion years or more.
Happy 60th birthday, with our admiration for the
music you have given to this world . . .
Go Johnny, go
I don't know why but this gives me a tremendous of amount of comfort and contentment
Going to have some rocking aliens 😁
I saw him live about 35 years ago. He played the intro of a song. The band then figured out what key it was in not knowing which song it was. Then he sang one line. And the audience sang the rest. This happened with all the songs. And that was in the Netherlands. It was hysterical but one of the best gigs I ever witnessed.
No one can tell play or sing a story better than Chuck Berry !
Back in the 60s, every dance band had to play Johnny B Good. A thousand years in the future they'll be still listening to this form of music.....For Real
This was from a Belgian TV show aired live in 1965, as part of his European tour of that year. He toured UK and I was lucky to see him 3 times on that tour. Astonishing is the only word I'd use to describe him.
Chuck had it all, the voice, the sound, the moves.... I'm surprised his famous duck-walk wasn't done. If it wasn't for him rock & roll music would have been so different. He influenced countless of musicians, and not just guitarists. His showmanship is still "copied" by front men and women even today. I think the song itself is SO great and that is why everyone covers it just to have fun. One of my best friends would play it on his guitar in the living room and we'd jam all night.
Even Angus Young of AC/DC copied his duck-walk.
Angus has Chuck all over him....huge influence!
I particularly love this in back to the future. How Marty Inadvertently creates a bootstrap paradox leading to chuck berry claiming this song, despite Marty covering it from his perspective
❤️
👑🎸
The Temporal Investigations Division will have some words for him later back then today.
After a listen to Chuck Berry, I recommend stepping a decade back & listening / reacting to Sister Rosetta Tharpe's "Rock Me" (1938) - while not yet called "Rock n Roll", the roots of what Chuck (and Little Richard, and Elvis, and ...) owe much to Tharpe's combination of Gospel, Blues, and rhythmic, melodic guitar!
I would also recommend checking out Rock Awhile (1949) by Goree Carter. It was very clearly an influence even starting off with a "Chuck Berry" riff for the intro years before Chuck Berry.
Wow! I missed an opportunity to see him live
Johnny Horton had a good couple of Rockabilly songs that came out in the early 1950's
Elvis wasn't the "roots", he did what most whites did back then , THEY COPIED THE BLACK ARTISTS and rode it to fame like Elvis did.
In the movie "Hail Hail Rock N' Roll" Bruce Springsteen tells the story of one night his band was Chuck's backing band. He asked what songs they were going to play and Berry said, "Chuck Berry songs." So Berry starts playing and they all gathered around the one member of the band who figured out what song it was as he was the band's musical historian and they just followed him the rest of the night.
The funny thing is that, from a _basic_ chordal structure, a lot of 50s music is actually not difficult. "Johnny B Goode" is a basic 12-bar blues progression. A marginally competent guitarist could be told "Johnny B Goode in A" and they'd be able to follow along.
Notice I said the basic chordal structure. Being able to back Barry doing it on stage is where the musicianship comes in. In that song, knowing how his voice, his guitar, and the rest of the band ties together is the hard part. It's the difference between playing the notes and making the music.
I have a friend that played with Chuck in the 70s.
He played keys for one show at Arlington Racetrack.
Very Cool !
The crown was given to Elvis , but Mr.Berry will always be Rock n Roll's King !
If you want to check out another of Chuck’s influences, look at the work of Sister Rosetta Tharpe.
RIP Chuck....what an legend, will always love his music, will always be missed.
I'm not a musician, but my older brother was a multi-instrumentalist who studied at UCLA. He once told me that Chuck must be a piano player too, because a lot of his songs were written in keys and contained chords which were not natural for a guitar player, but were commonly used when writing songs on piano. There were some great 50s rock'n'rollers; Berry, Elvis, Little Richard...but Jerry Lee Lewis always claimed that every one of the hit singles he put out had been recorded in one take. Speaking of, all of The Beatles early hits were recorded with the entire band playing together in one take. Maybe not the first take...but one take and no overdubs.
I love it she is beautiful and can move! Go Beth!!!
Thanks for your reaction! You couldn’t stop dancing, and as someone who dances a lot, I’d like to point out that this song is arguably the best swing dance song ever recorded!
He created more than new music, he created a new way of presenting it, and even today many artist fail miserably to even match him let alone create something new.
R.I.P. (Return If Possible)
I don't know who was enjoying themselves more Chuck, or Beth.
He is one of the inventors of Rock-n-Roll (not only one, but made big contribution to it)
This man not only created rock n roll music, but the template of what is the quintessential rock star. Everyone's been imitating him ever since.
If memory serves me Correctly, Bill Hailey had "Rock around the Clock" back in 1955. This song was the theme for the TV SHOWS HAPPY DAYS"!!!
"Johnny B. Goode" is a 1958 rock song written and first recorded by Chuck Berry. Released as a single, it peaked at number two on Billboard magazine's Hot .
Hi Beth. Thank you for a great and happy reaction. Lots of hugs from Sweden. You always makes me smile 😃❤
As well as being the consummate guitar entertainer, he had a clear and powerful voice.
The true king.👑
Chuck Berry is known as the Father of Rock 'n' Roll. Louis Jordan is known as the Grandfather of Rock 'n' Roll. Maybe you find time to react to "Caldonia", a number one hit for Louis Jordan and his Tympany Five in 1945. Video: v=b5TZcgzirMI
I love Chuck Berry - Maybellene I named my first car Maybellene.
Great choice Beth!!! I enjoyed immensely!! Had a fun chair dance along with you and the rest of your viewers!!
Love it! Brings back memories of my 1st show at the Fillmore Auditorium. Chuck was on top of the bill. 2nd was Eric Burdon & The Animals. Bottom of the bill was Steve Miller BLUES Band (before he was huge and dropped the "Blues").
Chuck was the man. SO GOOD, High energy and a darn good guitar player... My favorite move he did is referred to as the Duck Walk. Angus Young of AC DC does a version of it.. Another video of you enjoying and loving MUSIC -COOL....
Really enjoyed this Beth! I was 10 when this came out. Like someone else mentioned, I was hoping to see Chuck doing the duck walk.😄 Also enjoyed your comments as well as others who commented.
Musically Chuck Berry was a leader, he also done some very subtle songs about being black, Brown Eyed Handsome Man and Promised Land. A very sad day when he made it to the promised land.

Can you please react/analyze to either 1) Heavenly Father live(acapella) @ Sydney Opera House - Bon Iver
or 2) Calgary live @ Sydney Opera House - Bon Iver
These two performances are soooo good and emotional!
The intro was inspired by the intro to "Ain't That Just Like a Woman", a number one hit for Louis Jordan and his Tympany Five in 1946.
the king of rock and roll
this british accent makes me addicted to not stop watching
My daughter's bass tutor was one of the lucky ones who got to play with Berry in LA one night. He said Berry would negotiate a price at the audition and then see if you remembered the price as he was handing out the cash afterward. Apparently there's lots of people who were in his band for one night.
He was one of the few at that point who wrote his own songs. It didn't become the norm until the 60s.
And I was born in the middle of that song 😀 Oh btw, there is even a movie called Johnny Be Good, nothing to do with Chuck or the song, but still a fun film
I did enjoyed that, very good.
Nobody did guitar solos like this in 1958!
Great song, love it. After watching quite a few of your videos, which i like quite a lot, I have noticed you pronounce what we Americans would say as "um, as "em":. enjoy seeing how the people around the wold pronounce words along with their accents.
I'm so used to the Earthbound version of this song that I was surprised at first. Truly a master of his craft.
the king of rock and roll
First person inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Hey beth you know that sound you were looking for? Well listen to this.
Back to the Future reference... Discovered Chuck Berry and Van Halen with the movie... One of my all time favorite movies
It was played in the Movie Back to the Future in 1985 with Micheal J. Fox
🤭Next up for Beth, My ding-a-ling by the same singer. 😂😂
The trinity of Rock n roll - Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis. The wild of Rock came from them.
I guess, sometimes vocal perfection isn't the goal.....the "feel" is!
Belgian musicians backing him up are killer, watch the whole performance.
Pero si es un clásico!!!❤️
If you go thru Chucks catalog of songs you’ll see that there are several other songs that continue the Johnny B Goode story.
Beth is digging it the most
Rock and Roll was being born
This version of JBG is incomplete because they don't show Berry duckwalking across the stage during the guitar solo. The move was so iconic that Angus Young does it during every AC/DC concert as a tribute to Berry.
Well first of all, it was initially hard to even focus even though I've watched several of your actions, because just that beautiful mane of hair man, it just slays me. 😀
But yeah man, you are so knowledgeable and I can tell how much you appreciating this and I've seen this clip before but it's a great example of how he was early on and he was so athletic. Really. And he's a bit before my time but I'm a product of the late 60s early 70s but I started becoming a serious musician around probably the late '70s and on forward. And all kinds of stuff but definitely he influenced so many things. Not to mention the race barrier that he was up against. But anyway I'm glad you're putting the spotlight on it and by the way, your chair dancing is wonderful as well, laugh.
The golden record on the voyager 1 spacecraft features music composed by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Stravinsky and Chuck Berry.
Since you're venturing into early blues / rock, I would highly, Highly, HIGHLY suggest that you give a listen to 'Howlin Wolf' singing '300 pounds of joy' - a song that is guaranteed to make you smile, shimmy and sway...(The 1950s chess version, not the 60s/70s remaster)
Another great “roots” R & R” song is “Rocket 88”, credited to Jackie Brenston and His Delta Cats featuring a young Ike Turner on piano & vocals.
Turner played the piano, Brenston sang.
Chuck said.
"If I had filed a patent for this guitar riff, I could have made an astronomical amount of money."
Amazing performance. I know this will get lost in the sauce, but what I wouldn't give for you to react to Valley of Dreams by Tiger Army. You would love Nick 13's voice and the performance on that one is particularly special
Original Guitar God
Imagine I was the youngest sibling in the family , born in 1959 , i heard my brothers and sisters music 😅😮😮👀😃😆🙂😳🤔
Johnny Winter, Edgar Winter - Tobacco Road (Live).
The Back to the Future song. :)
All his songs were I IV V structure pretty much. He didn't even call out keys. Once you had the key, it was easy. Keith Richards took most all of his licks, and why not? I read that Buck Dharma from Blue Oyster Cult, one of the greatest rock guitarists still, was in one of those pick up bands when he was young and Chuck was not pleased when Buck took a solo. lol I saw Chuck and some local musicians in San Francisco in the 80s. I think he tore through his hits in about 45 minutes and was done (and on to collecting his money).
Chuck was a bit of a character. Wherever he was he required his fee, in US cash, in his hand before he stepped onstage. There were many delays and cancellations as promoters scrambled to do that - from the ticket window to backstage in a bag.
The guitar essentially replaced piano, which is why in early pieces like this, the parts are essentially interchangeable.
Straight Shuffle... Beth
Fun fact: This song was in fact first played in Hill Valley, California, at a high school dance in 1955 by some unknown musician named 'Marty'.
(Yes I'm joking)
It's no joke. I was there! He told us our kids were going to love it, and, you know what? He was RIGHT!!!
we were there together, Beth
Inspired so many future artists Keith Richards among them.
beth reacts bert sommer, jenniffer live at woodstock 1969
So great ....but checkout Tbone Walker and Louis Jordan that's where everybody got it. Tbone Shuffle is a good start.
Chuck's later-career habit of using pickup musicians at every date on the tour would also backfire. True, he could take a bunch of local pros anyplace and get them to play passable "Chuck Berry," but it also meant he never again got the nights where a touring band of regulars catches fire and creates an incandescent performance. Critics regularly slagged him for phoning in performances like that (it was a valid criticism), but uncritical audiences kept buying tickets to shows merely so they could boast "I saw Chuck Berry play!" And when you can make a living by phoning it in, why put in any more effort than that?
Interesting to see a conservative and older audience!!! No kids.... but he still enjoys himself :-)
You should do East Bound and Down by Jerry Reed
check out the version by Judas Priest. They cranked it up a notch.
No Chuck = No Rock and Roll. It’s that simple
A Master showman, story teller and reinvented the guitar almost singlehandedly into rock and roll as more prominent. I know some old guys who used back him in the midwest in Michigan called the Woolies. Many of his original records have a swing beat, not a straight rock beat, which gave it more swagger and style. Bob Seeger mad a career out of copying Chuck Berry methods in his fast numbers. Like Get Out of Denver, Old time Rock and Roll, and others like those.
Plus, just about EVERYONE who's from St. Louis knows who people like Chuck Berry and Albert King was!
Peace in the world
Must watch
DIR EN GREY - Vinushka [ eng sub ] LIVE
Berry learned all this from the King, Elvis Presley.
Beth is CUTE! The Chuck Berry style was used by the Beach Boy's, Rolling Stones, and the Beatles.
This video is not in 1958 but 1965
Why is the audio so low on this?
Judas Priest did a heavy cover of this song. Check it out! 😊
He was and had the most entertaining personality of anyone. Except maybe Elvis.
Have you ever done a reaction to Fish from Marillion
I'm guessing you have heard "My Ding-a-Ling". If you haven't, you need to. Live, of course.
The original lyric was instead of country boy he noticed his concerts were 50% black & white crowd so to cause a stink he replaced his original lyric colored boy
Chuck was doing the moves long before Michael Jackson .
Now do Judas Priest's version please 🤭
React A new moonlight by André Matos
how about doing the judas priest version of this song? Thank me later
U should do Marty mcfly back to the future
React to Nelson Gonçalves - Cabocla
