    thank you for your lectures. I lived in spain in the mid 1990s and the attitude was while he was a mercenary, a product of his time;
    he was still instrumental in preventing a moorish resurgence within spain and they would always be grateful to him for that.

      The thing is that generally all European royal families descend from El Cid, because his family had intermarried with the crown of Castille after his death. So everyone that has some degree of royal blood is by definition also a descendent of El Cid, Charlemagne and most other Great Kings of old.

    As Spanish we are tought he was both, a product of his times. But we see him as a hero because our country wouldn't exist without his heroic figure. "El cantar de mio Cid" is an obligatory reading in school here and a cool one for that mater. I don't know how difficult can be for english speakers but please read it if you can.

    Those myths are reflecting our times.
    One is from brutal but noble times.
    The other is from nihilistic and materialistic times.
    Its also funny how modern people can think that people from old ages had simmillar view on religion and sense of life to their own, but also on other hand they think that the same people were much less intelligent than they are.

    The reason why El Cid, Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, as the Ballad says is because the nobility close tho the king accused him to keep part of the loot that the city of Sevilla has to pay... So he was exiled, as the Law of his time, in less than nine days -the common law was one month...-, and has to defend publicly his honor as a knight. Since then he used to send the loot of the king every time he wan a battle... After that he was forgiven by the king, and always his honor and values were and example of a real knigth.
    The second part of the Cantar, the long ballad in verse, the knigth revenge the rape of his daugthers, Elvira and Sol, by the infants of Carrión. He defends his personal honor, this time, and doing so, by Law, a fight by sword between three of his men and the rapers, he finally got married her daugthers to the royalty of Navarra and Aragón.

    To Real Crusades History and the audiences reading this comment, I'm not sure how many of you are fans of the TV show "Forged In Fire", but I've been watching that show since day one (and I LOVE it!) and I've got a really cool update for you guys regarding El Cid. A few days back, I had an idea for a Reconquista Edition of an episode of Forged In Fire. The four blacksmiths/bladesmiths would each pick a forging technique they would use or some type of Damascus Pattern they would need to forge, but whichever one they picked, they would also be choosing one of the four main orders of Spanish Knights during the Reconquista to represent for the duration of that episode (until they got eliminated): The Knights Of Santiago, the Knights Of Calatrava, the Knights of Montesa, and the Knights Of Alcantara. And when it got down to the final two contestants, the Round Three Judge's Choice Weapon would be one of El Cid's two swords (either his Tizona or his Colada). Well, I just today found out that El Cid's Tizona WILL be the Round Three weapon of the episode of Forged In Fire airing (I think) November 6th! How cool is that?

      Because you are a peasant, comparing yourself to nobles. The time doesn't matter much, it's your relative standing within your time.
      Try comparing yourself to the working stiffs of the 11th Century. Get up, go to work, take lunch, work more, go back home have dinner, maybe hang out with family or the boys, maybe there's a party once in a while, go to Mass and chill on Sundays, repeat everything on Monday. That's probably your life in a nutshell, just like it's always been for all of us peasants throughout all time.
      The trick isn't wistfully pining for a time when you'd still be a peasant, or wishing or trying to be a noble. The real trick is realizing that being a peasant is actually the best possibility of all.

      Incorrect. His services were not available to anyone, that is a myth. He served as a commander for only one Muslim ruler, the Emir of Zaragoza, and that was just because he'd been exiled from his kingdom. After that, El Cid was reconciled with the King of Castile, and then built up his own power base in Valencia. He showed himself clearly a Christian partisan during his tenure as a ruler in his own right.
